HireVue Alternatives in 2026: 10 Tools for AI Interviews, One-Way Video and Sourcing

The best HireVue alternative in 2026, in my judgment, is The Cognitive, for teams that want to find candidates and run a live, two-way AI video interview with them in one account. HireVue says it has completed 70M interviews and serves 40% of the Fortune 100, and it sells through a demo with no price on its site. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles, interviews the people you pick, and publishes its prices.

HireVue alternatives split into 3 groups. TestGorilla, Alex (Apriora) and HeyMilo run AI interviews too. Spark Hire, Willo, VidCruiter and Hireflix are video interview tools, mostly one-way. Sapia.ai and Paradox screen high-volume applicants by chat and text. The load is real: Gem's 2026 recruiting benchmarks found that interviews per hire have risen 33% since 2021.

The best HireVue alternatives and competitors in 2026

  1. The Cognitive: best if you want sourcing and a live AI video interview in one self-serve account.
  2. TestGorilla: best for skills tests plus AI interviews, with a free plan.
  3. Alex (Apriora): best for AI interviews over video, phone, SMS and WhatsApp.
  4. HeyMilo: best for multilingual AI screening with cheat detection.
  5. Spark Hire: best for small and mid-sized teams that want an ATS with one-way video.
  6. VidCruiter: best for structured live and recorded interviews at enterprise scale.
  7. Willo: best for occasional hiring, paid per live role.
  8. Sapia.ai: best for frontline volume screened by text chat.
  9. Paradox: best for hourly hiring where scheduling is the bottleneck.
  10. Hireflix: best for plain one-way video at a published monthly price.

Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive. Putting it first is my judgment, and here's the reason: it lets you source people outside your database and run a live, two-way AI video interview with them, self-serve, at a published price. TestGorilla clears that bar too, though candidates take its AI interview on their own time, with 3 to 9 structured questions. After #1 the order is my read of how much of HireVue's job each tool covers. I haven't used the other 9 on a paid account. What I say about them comes from their own websites, read on 4 October 2026.

What is HireVue, and how does its AI Interviewer work?

HireVue sells "AI hiring technology to reveal proven skills and capabilities" to large employers. It has 4 products: Match and Apply, a website chat that steers applicants to a role; an AI Interviewer; assessments, with 200M completed by its count; and video interviewing, where "an interview co-pilot joins live interviews on your own Zoom or Teams". In May 2023 it acquired Modern Hire, so the two are now one company.

The AI Interviewer works in 5 steps on HireVue's page. AI drafts questions and answer rubrics from your job description. You approve the content and the voice. Then "AI agents ask and record candidate responses, including probing follow-up questions, in a natural two-way conversation." Skill answers are scored on a "Custom 1-5 rubric", qualification questions as "Meets or Does Not Meet", and recruiters see the scores in their ATS.

Candidates can opt out, models get "Annual independent audits", and HireVue names fairness audits for NYLL144, EEOC and OFCCP. Named languages are "French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and More". The page doesn't say whether it runs on video or voice, so ask in the demo. Like all of HireVue, it's sold by demo and quote.

My review in one line: the AI Interviewer is a serious enterprise product with the audit trail a regulated employer needs. It doesn't find candidates, and you can't try it without talking to sales. The full verdict is in our HireVue review, and candidates preparing for one can read our HireVue interview guide for candidates.

Why do teams look for HireVue alternatives?

3 reasons come up, and each shows on HireVue's own pages:

How do the top HireVue alternatives compare?

Here is how they stack up. I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 4 October 2026:

How did we rank these HireVue alternatives?

I started with 12 tools. myInterview came off because its domain now redirects into Radancy's wider screening suite. Truffle came off for space (it's in our one-way video interview software guide), and so did Metaview, whose core product is interview notes.

For the rest I read each vendor's product and pricing pages on 4 October 2026 and checked 4 things: an AI first round with no person on the call, follow-up questions in the moment, a start without a sales call at a published price, and search for new candidates outside your own database.

The Cognitive and TestGorilla meet all 4 on my reading. I rank The Cognitive first because its interview is a booked live conversation of 10 or 20 minutes, which is my judgment of what a HireVue buyer misses most. I couldn't sit a candidate-side interview on any competitor.

How do you choose a HireVue alternative?

Do you need follow-up questions, or are recorded answers enough?

One-way video records answers to a fixed list of questions, which is what Spark Hire, Willo and Hireflix do best. If you want the interviewer to dig into an answer, you need an AI interviewer: HireVue, The Cognitive, TestGorilla, Alex or HeyMilo. In The Cognitive the rubric is fixed for the role and the questions adapt to each answer.

Do you also need to find the candidates?

Gem's benchmarks found that sourced candidates are "nearly eight times more likely to be hired than inbound applicants". HireVue, Alex and HeyMilo work on people who applied or already sit in your ATS. The Cognitive and TestGorilla search outside profiles too, so the people you interview don't have to apply first.

How many first interviews do you run a week?

Interviews per hire are up 33% since 2021, per the same Gem report. If first screens eat your calendar, the AI round pays off fastest. In The Cognitive you can select any number of candidates and invite them in one go, and each person books their own slot without creating an account.

Is this for a small business?

Of these 10, The Cognitive, TestGorilla, Spark Hire's video plans, Willo Lite and Hireflix let you start that way. HireVue, Alex, HeyMilo, VidCruiter, Sapia.ai and Paradox go through a demo.

What will your legal team ask?

HireVue's strongest card is governance: AI opt-out paths, audit logs, adverse impact testing and annual independent audits. If you hire in a regulated sector at scale, put those questions to every vendor. The Cognitive rejects nobody automatically and logs integrity flags without scoring them, but it has no published bias audit. Our AI screening software compliance guide lists the laws behind those questions.

The 10 best HireVue alternatives, reviewed

1. The Cognitive: best if you want sourcing and a live AI video interview in one self-serve account

The Cognitive is AI recruiting software that sources candidates across ~900M public profiles and interviews them live with AI. You describe the role in plain English and it's read into filters you can edit. When we typed "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU", the filters included "Remote EU", read as Germany plus 7 other countries. Every person is judged against your must-haves, and anyone who misses one drops below the people who meet them. Each result card opens with a "Why this match" line of 1 or 2 reasons traced to the profile, such as "Go listed in skills". You can reveal verified emails and phone numbers, enriched from 30+ sources.

Then the interview. The people you pick get an invitation to a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, in any of 9 languages. The invitation tells candidates the interview is run by AI. They book their own slot without an account, and you can invite a whole shortlist at once.

The 5-minute recording above is a live AI interview for a go-to-market role. The AI asks about an outbound email campaign, then follows up on reply rates and on how the candidate qualified leads.

The report gives a 1 to 5 score per criterion, overall written feedback, a weighted score out of 100, a suggested verdict, the transcript and the recording. It also checks the resume: each claim comes back marked VERIFIED, REFUTED or UNCLEAR, with evidence from the interview. Nothing is rejected automatically, and integrity flags are logged, not scored. You can share the report as a read-only link with scores, feedback and the recording.

It connects to 60+ ATSs, including Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse and iCIMS, and writes the score, summary and report link back to candidates you imported from the ATS. People you source inside The Cognitive aren't written to the ATS automatically. It has no one-way mode, no phone, SMS or chat interviews, and no assessment library.

Pick it if you want the first interview handled and the pipeline filled, without a sales call. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, on monthly plans you can cancel anytime. More on our AI interviewer and AI sourcing tool pages.

2. TestGorilla: best for skills tests plus AI interviews, with a free plan

TestGorilla calls itself "the proof-first AI recruiting platform". It started with skills tests and now sells sourcing across "900M+ profiles" and two video formats. Video Questions are recorded answers that its AI scores. AI Interviews "feel like a live call": an AI interviewer "asks dynamic follow-up questions in the moment".

That makes it the closest small-team match to HireVue's mix of assessments and AI interviews. The trade-off is depth: 3 to 9 structured questions, taken on the candidate's own time. The pricing page lists free plans, sourcing priced per seat and assessments on credits.

Pick it if you want tests and AI interviews from one vendor and plan to start free. Our TestGorilla alternatives guide reviews it in full.

3. Alex (Apriora): best for AI interviews over video, phone, SMS and WhatsApp

Apriora's product is now called Alex, and apriora.ai redirects to alex.com. Alex "conducts personalized interviews with each candidate, acting as your always-on first round interviewer", over video, phone, SMS or WhatsApp. Its Identity product "checks a government ID against a live selfie during the interview", and it lists "33+ officially supported ATS integrations".

Talent Match "rediscovers top talent already in your ATS", which is your own database, not new people. There's no public price; the pricing link goes to a demo form. See HireVue vs Apriora for the head-to-head.

Pick it if you're a staffing firm or large employer that wants AI interviews on whatever channel candidates answer.

4. HeyMilo: best for multilingual AI screening with cheat detection

HeyMilo screens and interviews "with structured AI voice, video, SMS, and forms" in "20+ languages". Video interviews are "Scored two-way interviews", and it now sells HeyMilo Red, "standalone cheat detection for every interview".

Its sourcing resurfaces candidates already in your ATS. It gives "configurable fit scores with plain-language rationale" and syncs PDF reports to the ATS. Pricing goes through a demo.

Pick it if you hire across many languages and want voice and video screening on one contract.

5. Spark Hire: best for small and mid-sized teams that want an ATS with one-way video

Spark Hire sells "Hiring Software for Small & Medium Organizations": an ATS, one-way video interviews and a behavioural assessment. It surfaces candidates "with AI scoring, one-way video interviews, and automation", and its screening tools "can also be used on their own, or with another ATS".

The pricing page publishes prices. Video plans include "Unlimited live and one-way video interviews", pricing varies by company size, and video can be bought month-to-month or annually. The ATS is annual only. Its AI reviews and summarises recorded answers rather than asking questions.

Pick it if you're a lean team replacing HireVue's video step and want an ATS from the same vendor.

6. VidCruiter: best for structured live and recorded interviews at enterprise scale

VidCruiter helps teams "plan, conduct, analyze, and optimize enterprise and high-volume interviews". It runs pre-recorded video, live video "with built-in rating guides", and live interviews inside Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. AI Candidate Screening scores responses "against structured rubrics", and it adds AI fraud detection and video proctoring.

Its AI Interviewer is marked "COMING SOON", so today the AI scores answers rather than asking the questions. The pricing page is a request form.

Pick it if you're an enterprise or public body that wants HireVue-style structure and proctoring, with humans still running the live rounds.

7. Willo: best for occasional hiring, paid per live role

Willo does "skill assessments and one-way interviews", with 1,500+ assessments, 18+ languages and 50+ native integrations. It's openly cautious about AI: it promises to "support faster shortlisting without handing decisions over to AI".

The pricing page has 2 plans. Willo Lite has no contract and charges per live role each month, for up to 5 live roles. Willo Enterprise is billed annually and quoted through a demo. Both list anti-cheat and ID checks.

Pick it if you hire a few times a year and want one-way video without an annual contract.

8. Sapia.ai: best for frontline volume screened by text chat

Sapia.ai sells "AI Interviews built on the science of structured assessment", used by "10m+ candidates". Its chat interview page is headed "Text is best": candidates answer 5 questions in writing, in their own time, and the AI analyses only the text. It runs in 9 languages, including Danish, Finnish and Swedish.

Sapia.ai says Woolworths uses it to "interview 1 million people per year". There's no video conversation and no public price.

Pick it if you hire retail, contact-centre or airline staff by the thousand and candidates apply on their phones. Our hourly hiring software list covers that market.

9. Paradox: best for hourly hiring where scheduling is the bottleneck

Paradox makes "conversational hiring software" around its assistant, Olivia. Olivia validates "qualifications upfront, through chat or text", schedules interviews and runs a conversational ATS built for frontline workers. Its video product adds recorded video prompts and in-browser live interviews.

Paradox screens by chat; the video interview is still run by a person. It sells by demo, and it has a dedicated Workday offering. See HireVue vs Paradox.

Pick it if your hourly hiring stalls between "applied" and "booked".

10. Hireflix: best for plain one-way video at a published monthly price

Hireflix is "one-way video interview software" and nothing else. Candidates record answers in their own time, with no app or signup, and you get automatic transcriptions.

The pricing page publishes monthly plans you can cancel any time, or annual ones, with unlimited seats, positions and responses, and you can "Try free for 1 month". It integrates with Lever, Greenhouse, Ashby, Workable and others. I found no AI scoring.

Pick it if you only used HireVue for recorded answers and want the cheapest simple swap.

Which HireVue alternatives run live, two-way AI interviews?

The Cognitive is the one to pick if you want a booked, live, two-way AI video interview with people you sourced yourself, at a published price. Our guide to live AI video interviews compares the formats. 3 others on this list run AI interviews with follow-up questions, each sold differently:

VidCruiter's AI Interviewer is marked "coming soon". For the wider field, see our best AI interview platforms list.

How does HireVue compare with Spark Hire, Willo and Modern Hire?

HireVue vs Spark Hire

Spark Hire is built for small and mid-sized organisations and publishes its prices; HireVue sells "from mid-market to enterprise" by quote. Both offer one-way and live video. HireVue adds an AI Interviewer and a large assessment library, while Spark Hire adds an ATS and AI review of recorded answers. Our one-way video interview tools guide covers Spark Hire alongside its closest rivals.

HireVue vs Willo

Willo is one-way interviews and assessments with a pay-per-role plan. HireVue is an enterprise platform with an AI interviewer that asks follow-ups. Willo suits occasional hiring; HireVue suits a large TA team with a compliance function.

HireVue vs Modern Hire

There's no longer a choice to make. HireVue announced on 9 May 2023 that it had acquired Modern Hire, so Modern Hire's interviewing and assessments are now part of HireVue. If you're comparing the two, you're comparing one vendor.

HireVue vs TestGorilla

Both pair assessments with AI interviews. TestGorilla publishes prices and adds sourcing; HireVue brings 1,300+ validation studies, FedRAMP and partner integrations with Workday, SAP and Oracle. A large regulated employer leans HireVue, a growing company TestGorilla.

For a broader view of video tools, read our video interview software platforms guide.

How much does HireVue cost, and is there a cheaper alternative?

HireVue doesn't publish a price. Its pricing page offers a demo, an ROI calculator and a note that the platform is built for "mid-market to enterprise". You get a custom quote from sales. HireVue is free for candidates.

For a cheaper start, the alternatives that publish prices are The Cognitive, TestGorilla, Spark Hire, Willo Lite and Hireflix. Alex, HeyMilo, VidCruiter, Sapia.ai and Paradox sell by quote, like HireVue.

For a free HireVue alternative, TestGorilla has free plans and Hireflix offers a free first month. The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month. A search costs 1 credit per candidate it returns, 5 to reveal an email and 10 to reveal a phone number. The Cognitive also has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits. More in our AI recruiting software pricing guide.

Who is The Cognitive built for?

The Cognitive is built for in-house recruiters, founders and agency recruiters who hire professional roles and want a live first conversation, with a resume claim check, before a hiring manager spends an hour.

How do you test a HireVue alternative before you switch?

Run 1 open role through the alternative for 2 weeks, next to your current process. Count completed interviews, the reports a hiring manager agreed with, and your own hours before the first manager interview. Ask each vendor how candidates are told about AI and what goes back to your ATS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best HireVue alternative in 2026?

In my judgment, The Cognitive is the best HireVue alternative in 2026 for teams that want to find candidates and interview them in one account. It searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief, then runs a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes with the people you pick, at a published price. TestGorilla is the strongest alternative if you also want skills tests, and Spark Hire suits small teams that want one-way video with an ATS.

Is there a HireVue alternative with live, two-way AI interviews?

Yes. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview that candidates book themselves, with a rubric fixed for the role and questions that adapt to each answer. TestGorilla sells AI interviews that its site says feel like a live call, taken on the candidate's own time, while Alex (Apriora) and HeyMilo run AI interviews over video and voice through a demo. Spark Hire, Willo and Hireflix record one-way answers instead.

What are HireVue's main competitors?

HireVue's main competitors are The Cognitive, TestGorilla, Alex (Apriora) and HeyMilo for AI interviews, Spark Hire, VidCruiter, Willo and Hireflix for video interviews, and Sapia.ai and Paradox for high-volume chat screening. The Cognitive is the one that also sources new candidates and publishes its prices. Modern Hire is no longer a competitor, because HireVue acquired it in May 2023.

Is there a cheaper alternative to HireVue?

Yes, The Cognitive publishes its prices: AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, on monthly plans you can cancel anytime. HireVue does not publish a price and sells by custom quote. TestGorilla, Spark Hire, Willo Lite and Hireflix also publish prices, while Alex, HeyMilo, VidCruiter, Sapia.ai and Paradox sell by quote.

How much does HireVue cost?

HireVue does not publish a price; it sells by custom quote after a demo, and its pricing page says the platform is built for mid-market to enterprise. The cost depends on which products you buy, such as the AI Interviewer, assessments and video interviewing, and on your volume. HireVue is free for candidates. If you want a published price, The Cognitive lists its plans on its website.

What is the best HireVue alternative for a small business?

The Cognitive suits a small business that wants sourcing and a live AI interview without a sales call, on monthly plans with published prices. Spark Hire is built for small and medium organisations and pairs one-way video with an ATS. Willo Lite charges per live role with no contract, which fits a business that hires a few times a year.

Is there a free HireVue alternative?

TestGorilla has free plans and Hireflix offers a free first month, so both let you start without paying. The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits, so you can test the search on a real role before you buy. HireVue has no free plan for employers.

HireVue vs Spark Hire: which is better?

Spark Hire is better for small and mid-sized teams that want one-way and live video with an ATS at a published price, and HireVue is better for large employers that need an AI interviewer, validated assessments and enterprise compliance. Spark Hire's AI reviews recorded answers; HireVue's AI Interviewer asks follow-up questions. If you want a live AI interview without enterprise procurement, The Cognitive sits between them.

HireVue vs Willo: what's the difference?

Willo runs one-way interviews and skill assessments in 18+ languages, with a pay-per-live-role plan and no contract, while HireVue is an enterprise platform with an AI interviewer, assessments and live video. Willo says it supports shortlisting without handing decisions over to AI. The Cognitive is the option if you want a live, two-way AI interview rather than recorded answers.

Is HireVue's AI Interviewer any good?

HireVue's AI Interviewer is a strong enterprise product: AI drafts questions and rubrics from your job description, asks probing follow-up questions in a two-way conversation, and scores answers on a custom 1-5 rubric that recruiters see in their ATS. Its governance is its biggest strength, with AI opt-out paths, audit logs and annual independent audits. It is sold only through a demo, it does not find candidates, and its page does not say whether it runs on video or voice.
