TestGorilla Alternatives for 2026: 10 Tools for Skills Tests, AI Interviews and Sourcing
By Sparsh Goyal, Founder at The Cognitive. Published · Last updated
- The best TestGorilla alternative in 2026 is The Cognitive for sourcing plus a live AI interview, followed by Testlify for a bigger test library, Canditech for job simulations and Equip for an ATS with tests and AI interviews.
- The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles and runs a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes at a slot the candidate books, while TestGorilla's AI interview is taken on the candidate's own time.
- TestGorilla stays stronger on test library breadth and a free plan, and HireVue, Criteria, Glider AI and Maki People suit enterprise buyers who want governance or voice screening.
- I run The Cognitive. The other 9 are judged from their own websites, read on 4 October 2026.
The best TestGorilla alternative in 2026 is The Cognitive if you want new candidates found and then interviewed live by AI at a slot they book, and Testlify if you want an even bigger test library. Canditech is the pick for job simulations, Equip bundles an ATS with tests and AI interviews, and HireVue fits enterprises that need audit paperwork behind the AI.
TestGorilla is hard to beat on paper, with 350+ skills tests, sourcing, AI interviews and a free plan. Most teams that switch want a different first round or a narrower tool. Gem's 2026 recruiting benchmarks, built on 1.2 million hires, found only 8% of applicants get past the initial screen. That first screen is where these 10 tools differ most.
The best TestGorilla alternatives in 2026
- The Cognitive: best for finding candidates and interviewing them live with AI at a time they book.
- Testlify: best for a larger test library with AI interviews in video, audio and chat.
- Canditech: best for job simulations built around your role.
- Equip: best for an ATS, skills tests and conversational AI interviews on one plan.
- Vervoe: best for enterprise work-sample tasks with independently audited AI grading.
- Criteria: best for validated cognitive and personality tests plus an AI voice interview.
- HireVue: best for large employers that need governance paperwork and AI opt-out paths.
- Glider AI: best for staffing firms that need identity checks on every candidate.
- Maki People: best for enterprise voice screening in 45+ languages.
- Willo: best for one-way video screening without an annual contract.
Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive. Putting it first is my judgment. TestGorilla also searches outside profiles and runs a self-serve AI interviewer at a published price, so I make no "only" claim. The checkable difference: our interview is a live, two-way AI video conversation at a slot the candidate books, and TestGorilla's is taken on the candidate's own time inside a test-first product. After #1 the order is my judgment of how well each tool replaces TestGorilla. I haven't used the other 9 on a paid account. What I say about them comes from their own websites, read on 4 October 2026.
What is TestGorilla, and why do teams look for an alternative?
TestGorilla calls itself "the proof-first AI recruiting platform". It sells 2 products you can buy apart or together. Gorilla Sourcing turns a plain-language brief into must-haves and nice-to-haves and searches more than 900 million profiles, 3M+ of them people who already sat a TestGorilla test. Gorilla Assessments covers 350+ skills tests, video questions, job simulations and AI interviews.
The AI interview is the part buyers ask about most. TestGorilla says its AI interviews "feel like a live call", with an AI avatar that asks follow-up questions in the moment. Its FAQ says candidates get 3 to 9 structured questions and "can complete it on their own time". So the candidate starts it whenever they like, and nobody books a slot.
Teams look elsewhere for 3 reasons. They want a live first round rather than a test. They find custom AI interviews and ATS integrations sit on the top Plus plan. Or they need one job done, such as coding tests or enterprise compliance, by a specialist.
How do the top TestGorilla competitors compare?
Here is how they stack up. I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 4 October 2026:
| Tool | Best for | Tests and assessments | AI interview, and when it's taken | Finds people outside your database? | Price on website? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TestGorilla | The tool you're comparing | 350+ tests, simulations, coding | AI avatar with follow-ups, on the candidate's own time | Yes, over 900 million profiles | Yes, plus a free plan |
| The Cognitive | Sourcing plus a live AI interview | None; a rubric per role | Live two-way video, 10 or 20 minutes, at a booked slot | Yes, ~900M public profiles | Yes |
| Testlify | Biggest test library | 3,500+ tests | Video, audio or chat, conversational or one-way | No | Yes |
| Canditech | Job simulations | 500+ tests | No AI interviewer; one-way video | No | Yes, except Enterprise |
| Equip | ATS plus tests on one plan | Coding, aptitude, psychometric and more | Video and voice, on the candidate's own time | No, rediscovers past applicants | Yes |
| Vervoe | Enterprise work samples | Job simulations, AI graded | Chatbot-style screening | No | No |
| Criteria | Validated aptitude tests | Cognitive, personality, risk, skills | AI voice interview, no scheduling | No | No |
| HireVue | Enterprise governance | Skills tests, game-based | Voice-based, two-way, with follow-ups | No | No |
| Glider AI | Staffing and contingent hiring | Skills tests, coding IDE | AI video, recorded on own time | Says its agents source | No |
| Maki People | Enterprise volume screening | 300+ skills screened | Voice, in browser or by phone | No | No |
| Willo | No-contract one-way video | 1,500+ assessments | No AI interviewer; one-way | No | Lite only |
How did we rank these TestGorilla alternatives?
I started with 11 tools that buyers put next to TestGorilla: Canditech, Testlify, Vervoe, Equip, Criteria, iMocha, HackerRank, Glider AI, Willo, HireVue and Maki People. I kept 9, plus The Cognitive.
HackerRank came off because its pricing page wouldn't render for me, so I couldn't confirm its pricing model. It's still the name to check for coding roles: its Chakra AI interviewer opens a working codebase and asks follow-ups about what the candidate built. iMocha came off because it now sells a "Skills and Work Intelligence Platform" for workforce planning, by demo only.
For the rest I read each vendor's product and pricing pages on 4 October 2026 and checked 5 things: test library size, the AI interview format and when it's taken, whether it finds people who never applied, whether a price is published, and how it connects to an applicant tracking system (ATS). I couldn't sit a candidate-side interview on the other tools, so I make no claim about how well any of them scores.
How do you choose a TestGorilla alternative?
Do you mainly need tests, or a first-round interview?
Pull a month of TestGorilla usage first. If most invites went to skills tests, Testlify, Canditech and Criteria are the closest swaps; our pre-employment assessment guide explains which test types predict job performance. If you leaned on AI interviews, compare The Cognitive, Equip, HireVue and Maki People.
Should the AI interview be live, or taken on the candidate's own time?
Own-time interviews remove scheduling, which suits very large applicant pools. A booked slot gives the candidate a fixed appointment. In The Cognitive the candidate books without creating an account, and the interview runs 10 or 20 minutes in any of 9 languages, with a fixed rubric and questions that adapt to each answer.
Do you also need more candidates?
Gem found sourced candidates are nearly 8 times more likely to be hired than inbound applicants. Of these 10, TestGorilla and The Cognitive both search outside your database from a plain-English brief, and Glider AI says its agents source too.
Can you buy without a sales call?
TestGorilla, The Cognitive, Testlify, Canditech and Equip publish prices, and Willo publishes its Lite plan. Vervoe, Criteria, HireVue, Glider AI and Maki People start with a demo or a quote form.
Will someone check what the resume claims?
Gem says interviews per hire are up 33% since 2021, so a weak first round pushes more work onto hiring managers. The Cognitive's report covers up to 5 resume claims the AI chose to probe, each marked VERIFIED, REFUTED or UNCLEAR with the evidence from the interview, so the next round can start where the doubts are. Our candidate fraud best practices cover the rest of that check.
The 10 best TestGorilla alternatives, reviewed
1. The Cognitive: best for finding candidates and interviewing them live with AI at a time they book
The Cognitive is AI recruiting software that sources candidates across ~900M public profiles and interviews them live with AI. Sourcing starts with a brief in plain English, read into filters you can edit. When we typed "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU", the filters read "Remote EU" as Germany plus 7 other countries. Each result card opens with a "Why this match" line of 1 or 2 reasons traced to the profile. You can reveal verified emails and phone numbers.
The interview is the real difference from TestGorilla. Select any number of candidates, sourced or imported from your ATS, and invite them in one go. Each one books a slot without creating an account, and the invitation tells them the interview is run by AI. It's a live, two-way video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, where the rubric stays fixed for the role and the questions follow what the candidate just said.
The 5-minute recording above is a live AI interview for a go-to-market role. The AI asks about an outbound email campaign, then follows up on reply rates and how leads were qualified.
The report gives a 1 to 5 score per criterion, overall written feedback, a weighted score out of 100, a suggested verdict, the transcript and the recording, plus the resume claims it probed. Nothing is rejected automatically, and integrity flags are logged, not scored. A read-only link shares the scores, feedback and recording, without the transcript.
The Cognitive connects to 60+ ATSs, including Greenhouse, Workday, iCIMS and BambooHR. For candidates imported from your ATS it writes back a note with the score, summary and report link; people you source inside The Cognitive aren't written to your ATS automatically. Against TestGorilla it has no test library, no coding editor, no job simulations and no one-way video mode.
Pick it if first-round calls eat your week and you sometimes need the candidates too. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, on monthly plans you can cancel anytime. More on our AI interviewer and AI sourcing pages.

2. Testlify: best for a larger test library with AI interviews in video, audio and chat
Testlify is the closest like-for-like swap for Gorilla Assessments. Its homepage lists 3,500+ validated tests, roughly 10 times TestGorilla's 350+. Its interviews page describes AI-scored interviews in video, audio and chat "with role-specific questions and intelligent follow-ups", and its pricing page lists conversational and one-way formats.
The pricing page publishes credit plans, monthly or annual, charged when a candidate starts, with 100+ ATS integrations on every plan and a 7-day free trial. The limit: I found no search for new candidates.
Pick it if you used TestGorilla mostly for tests and want more of them, with ATS sync on the entry plan.
3. Canditech: best for job simulations built around your role
Canditech calls itself "The Skill Assessment Platform for the AI-age". It has 500+ tests, but the draw is job simulations: Google Sheet and SQL tasks inside the test, and tools like ChatGPT and Codex embedded so you can watch how a candidate uses AI.
Video is one-way only, scored by AI, and Canditech is plain that it doesn't replace interviews. Pricing is based on candidates assessed per year, with Team and Pro prices shown and Enterprise by quote. Our Canditech alternatives guide goes deeper.
Pick it if you want a test that looks like the actual job, and you'll run interviews elsewhere.
4. Equip: best for an ATS, skills tests and conversational AI interviews on one plan
Equip sums itself up as "CV Screening. Skill Assessments. AI Interviews. All AI-automated via an ATS." The ATS, with job posts and offers, is on every plan. Its conversational AI interview runs by video and voice, asks follow-ups and adjusts difficulty, and candidates take it on their own time.
The pricing page publishes a per-candidate credit model, monthly or annual, with a 30-day free trial and 10 free credits. "Source candidates" on Equip means job posting and rediscovering past applicants, not a search of outside profiles. See our Equip alternatives guide.
Pick it if you don't have an ATS yet and want tests and AI interviews inside the one you buy.
5. Vervoe: best for enterprise work-sample tasks with independently audited AI grading
Vervoe calls itself "The most trusted skills-based AI platform for hiring". Candidates do tasks from the job, such as spreadsheets, coding or presentations, and AI grades them. It says its AI is independently audited for fairness and bias by Holistic AI.
The pricing page shows no figures and leads to a demo. Screening is chatbot-style, and I found no AI video interviewer and no outside sourcing.
Pick it if you hire at enterprise volume and your legal team wants a named third-party bias audit on the grading.
6. Criteria: best for validated cognitive and personality tests plus an AI voice interview
Criteria has sold pre-employment tests for over 20 years, covering cognitive aptitude, personality, emotional intelligence, risk and skills, and holds ISO 42001 certification for its AI management. Our guide to personality tests for hiring covers what that kind of test can and can't predict.
Its interview page lists 3 modes: one-way video, live video run by your interviewer, and an AI-conducted voice interview in the browser that candidates answer by voice or chat, with no scheduling. The AI Interview Agent comes with an "AI Upgrade", and every package on the plans page says "Request Pricing".
Pick it if you want aptitude and personality science that's been validated for decades, more than a broad skills catalog.
7. HireVue: best for large employers that need governance paperwork and AI opt-out paths
HireVue sells interviews, assessments including game-based ones, a website chat agent and an interview co-pilot for Zoom or Teams. Its AI Interviewer asks "probing follow-up questions, in a natural two-way conversation", described elsewhere on the site as voice-based, in languages including French, English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Its governance list includes AI opt-out paths, adverse impact testing before go-live and audit logs. The pricing page has no figures and aims "From mid-market to enterprise". See our HireVue review and our HireVue alternatives.
Pick it if you screen thousands of applicants and compliance signs off on every tool.
8. Glider AI: best for staffing firms that need identity checks on every candidate
Glider AI calls itself a "conversational AI Agent for recruiting and learning". It says its agents source, run outreach and run phone screens, mainly for staffing firms and enterprises. Its AI video interviews ask "context-aware questions and natural follow-ups", with ID verification and AI proctoring built in.
Its own FAQ defines these as interviews where candidates record responses on their own time. The pricing page is a demo form. Our Glider AI alternatives guide covers it in more depth.
Pick it if you place contractors with clients who want identity and skills proof on every submission.
9. Maki People: best for enterprise voice screening in 45+ languages
Maki runs a set of named AI agents on top of your ATS. Shiro screens across 300+ skills, Mochi runs voice interviews in 45+ languages, Ken runs deeper assessments across 400+ skills, and Tomo joins your human interviews on Zoom, Teams or Meet to take structured notes.
The pricing page describes usage-based credits per candidate interaction, sold by quote, with 30+ ATS and HR integrations. It's built for enterprise, so a small team will find it heavy. See our Maki People review and Maki alternatives.
Pick it if you hire frontline or graduate roles across many countries and languages.
10. Willo: best for one-way video screening without an annual contract
Willo has candidates answer structured questions on video in their own time, from 1,500+ ready-made assessments in 18+ languages, with identity and right-to-work checks available.
The pricing page offers Lite, pay as you go per live role each month with the price shown, and Enterprise, billed annually after a demo. There's no AI interviewer and no sourcing. Our list of one way video interview software compares Willo with its closest rivals.
Pick it if you used TestGorilla's video questions more than its tests and hire for a few roles a month.
Which TestGorilla alternatives run AI interviews, and when are they taken?
The Cognitive is the alternative to pick for a live, two-way AI video interview at a slot the candidate books, in a self-serve account at a published price. TestGorilla, Equip and Glider AI run AI interviews with follow-ups that candidates take on their own time. Testlify offers conversational and one-way formats, HireVue, Criteria and Maki People run voice-based AI interviews, and Canditech and Willo stick to one-way video. For the wider field, see our best AI interview platforms list and the async vs live AI interview guide.
How does TestGorilla compare with The Cognitive?
These 2 overlap more than any other pair here: both search outside profiles from a plain-language brief, run an AI interviewer that follows up and publish prices.
- The interview. TestGorilla's is 3 to 9 structured questions with an AI avatar, taken on the candidate's own time. Ours is a live two-way video conversation of 10 or 20 minutes at a slot the candidate books, in 9 languages.
- The report. TestGorilla scores each answer against your rubric with its reasoning. Ours gives a 1 to 5 score per criterion, overall written feedback, a weighted score out of 100 and up to 5 probed resume claims marked VERIFIED, REFUTED or UNCLEAR.
- Must-haves in sourcing. TestGorilla lists only people who meet them. We rank people who miss one below those who meet them.
- Outreach. TestGorilla emails from your connected Gmail, Outlook or IMAP mailbox. We send email and SMS sequences from platform mailboxes on Sourcing Pro.
TestGorilla is stronger in 3 places. Its 350+ tests, coding challenges and job simulations have no match in The Cognitive. Its free plan covers both products, where we offer a trial. And 3M+ people in its sourcing pool already carry a TestGorilla skills score.
How does TestGorilla compare with HireVue, Testlify and Canditech?
TestGorilla vs HireVue
Both sell tests and AI interviews. TestGorilla is self-serve with a free plan, published prices and sourcing. HireVue sells by demo to mid-market and enterprise teams, with AI opt-out paths and a voice-based AI interviewer.
TestGorilla vs Testlify
Testlify has the bigger library and ATS integrations on every plan. TestGorilla adds sourcing and a free plan, where Testlify offers a 7-day trial.
TestGorilla vs Canditech
Canditech goes deeper on custom job simulations and psychometric support, with one-way video only. TestGorilla covers more ground, adding AI interviews and sourcing.
TestGorilla review: what it does well, and where it stops
I haven't used TestGorilla on a paid account, so this review comes from its own site. The breadth is real: sourcing, 350+ tests across 8 categories, AI interviews from 100+ expert tracks, job simulations and coding challenges in one account. Its Trust Layer validates identity and flags window switches, and you can override any AI score. Our guide to AI interview cheating detection explains what signals like these catch.
The limits show up on the plans page. Free sourcing is browse-only, since contacting people starts on Core. The full AI interview library, custom AI interviews, custom coding challenges, ID verification and native ATS integrations all sit on Plus.
How much does TestGorilla cost, and how do the alternatives charge?
TestGorilla prices its 2 products separately on its pricing page. Gorilla Sourcing is priced per Sourcing seat, with Free, Core and Plus. Gorilla Assessments is priced per account, with a free plan of 10 credits a month, then Core and Plus; tests and AI interviews spend credits per candidate. You pay monthly or annually, and paid prices are published. Of the alternatives, Testlify, Canditech, Equip and Willo Lite publish prices, and the other 5 quote after a demo.
The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month. A search costs 1 credit per candidate it returns, 5 to reveal an email and 10 to reveal a phone number, and a reveal is charged only when a value comes back.
Who is The Cognitive built for?
The Cognitive is built for in-house recruiters, founders and agency recruiters who want the first-round interview handled live by AI, and who often need to find the candidates too. For the test side, see our talent assessment tools compared guide.
- Keep your ATS. The Cognitive writes the score, summary and report link back to candidates imported from it, across 60+ ATSs.
- Pair it with a test tool such as TestGorilla, Testlify or Canditech when the role needs a marked coding test or a job simulation.
- Agencies keep their client process. The read-only report link travels with each candidate you submit.
How do you test a TestGorilla alternative before you switch?
Take 1 open role that runs on TestGorilla today. Send the next 20 candidates through the alternative, then compare completion, how many you'd still meet, and the hours to a shortlist. The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits, so you can run that test on a real role.

TestGorilla vs The Cognitive: what's the difference?
The Cognitive interviews live at a booked slot, while TestGorilla leads with tests and runs an AI interview candidates take on their own time. Both search outside profiles and publish prices. The Cognitive's report checks up to 5 resume claims the AI chose to probe; TestGorilla wins on its 350+ test library and its free plan.
TestGorilla vs HireVue: which is better?
TestGorilla is better for teams that want to start self-serve with a free plan, published prices and a sourcing search. HireVue is better for large employers that need AI opt-out paths, adverse impact testing and a voice-based AI interviewer, bought through a demo. The Cognitive sits between them, with a live AI video interview at a published price.
How much does TestGorilla cost?
TestGorilla publishes its prices and sells 2 products separately: Gorilla Sourcing priced per Sourcing seat, and Gorilla Assessments priced per account. Each has Free, Core and Plus plans, billed monthly or annually, and tests and AI interviews spend credits per candidate. The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.

The Cognitive doesn't sell tests; it pairs well with any of them.
Is TestGorilla worth it?
TestGorilla is worth it if you want tests, sourcing and AI interviews from one vendor and can use the Plus plan, where custom AI interviews and ATS integrations sit. It's a weaker fit if you want a live, booked first-round interview, which The Cognitive runs. I haven't used TestGorilla on a paid account; this comes from its own site.
What's the best TestGorilla alternative for agencies and small teams?
The Cognitive suits agencies and small teams that need to find candidates and interview them without a sales call, on monthly plans you can cancel anytime. Agencies can send clients a read-only report link with scores, written feedback and the recording. Willo's pay-as-you-go Lite plan suits small teams that only need one-way video.
