How to Search Resumes on Indeed: Smart Sourcing Steps, Costs and What It Misses

Indeed resume search is the employer tool for searching resumes on Indeed, now sold as Indeed Smart Sourcing (formerly Indeed Resume). You search by job title, location and keywords, with Boolean support, narrow the list with filters such as recently active, then message people inside Indeed. It is a per-user subscription with a published price and a 14-day free trial.

The pool is the catch. Indeed says it holds more than 380M Sourceable Profiles, and it defines each one as a job seeker account set to public with a verified email address. If someone never made that account public, no Indeed resume finder will show them. For those people, The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief, which is the job we built it for.

Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive. Every Indeed fact below comes from Indeed's own employer pages and help centre, read on 4 October 2026, and I quote no Indeed price figure. Our guide to how much Indeed costs has the number.

How does Indeed resume search work in 2026?

Indeed resume search now lives inside Smart Sourcing. Indeed launched Smart Sourcing on 2 April 2024, and its help centre still calls the product "Indeed Smart Sourcing (formerly Indeed Resume)". The old indeed.com/hire/resume-search address redirects to the Smart Sourcing page, so anyone typing "indeed employer resume search" lands on the same product.

Once you sign in to an employer account and click Smart Sourcing at the top left, you get 2 ways to find people:

Around those 2 tabs sit the working tools. You can save a search, switch on an email alert for new resumes that match it, and add people to projects. A Sourcing Assistant can automate outreach for a job you pick from the dashboard. Professional subscribers can share projects with teammates and invite hiring managers who have no subscription of their own.

Contact happens inside Indeed. You pick a template or write a message, choose the job post it is about, and click Contact. Indeed's help article says it will "send up to three reminders if the candidate doesn't reply." Indeed's product page advertises built-in messaging and bulk messaging. It does not advertise exporting a candidate's email or phone number.

Which filters and Boolean operators does Indeed resume search support?

Indeed lists 3 filters by name on its plan card: willingness to relocate, recently active, and job type. Advanced search adds years of experience and education. Indeed's own Boolean guide says to run a job title and location first, then use the left-hand sidebar to filter further.

For keywords, Indeed's guide documents AND, OR and NOT, parentheses that resolve first, and quotation marks for phrases. It also says to type the operators in capitals, because that is how the search engine knows you mean Boolean. Indeed's healthcare sourcing guide adds 3 field operators that aim at one part of the resume: skill:, school: and fieldofstudy:. It also documents "lives in" before a place name, with a warning that it can exclude relevant people.

The AI layer sits on top. Smart Sourcing marks relevant skills with an AI Highlighter and can draft messages from the resume and your job description. Indeed says "AI features are not available in certain markets," so check your region before you count on them.

How much does Indeed resume search cost?

Indeed resume search is a subscription, priced per user, billed monthly or yearly, and the price is published on Indeed's Smart Sourcing page in your region's currency. The number changes by country, so I leave it to our Indeed cost guide. The model is what decides your bill:

So the practical cost question is how many people each recruiter will message in a month, multiplied by the number of recruiters. Indeed lists resume search as unlimited on the Professional plan, so contacts set the bill.

Is Indeed resume search free?

Indeed resume search is not free beyond a trial. Indeed offers eligible employers a free 14-day trial of the Smart Sourcing Professional plan. During the trial you can search and invite up to 5 contacts, and access ends after 14 days unless you buy a subscription. The terms say you cannot trial a subscription type you have already tried, and the trial is valid for Indeed's Global market.

2 other details matter for anyone hoping to browse for free. Indeed's help centre says saved searches only work with an active subscription. Its purchasing article frames the product as "A Smart Sourcing subscription lets you contact candidates with resumes on Indeed." Indeed publishes no statement that ongoing search without a subscription is free.

The nearest paid route outside Smart Sourcing is Premium Sponsored Jobs, which Indeed says lets you "view candidates whose resumes on Indeed fit your job description and invite them to apply." That works per job post, not as an open search; our walkthrough on how to post a job on Indeed covers that route. For genuinely free ways to find resumes, see our free resume search guide.

How to search resumes on Indeed, step by step

This is the order I would run an Indeed resume lookup in, built from Indeed's own help articles. It keeps your contacts for the people worth messaging.

  1. Post the job first. Matched candidates and Sourcing Assistant both work from a job post, and every message has to name one. A clear post also gives the matching something to work with.
  2. Start the trial or the plan on purpose. Put the trial's end date in your calendar on day 1. You get 5 contacts in the trial, so spend them on your best 5, not your first 5.
  3. Read the Matched candidates tab before you type anything. It costs nothing extra to look, and it shows you which titles Indeed thinks fit your post.
  4. Search with a title, a location and 1 or 2 keywords. Use the Search for Candidates tab. Add more only after you have seen page 1.
  5. Filter to recently active, then add job type and relocation. Smart Sourcing is built around active job seekers, so recency is where the quality is.
  6. Open the full resume before you message. Indeed's rules ask you to contact people with the licence, degree or certification the job needs shown on their resume, and not to contact over-qualified people.
  7. Save the search and turn on alerts. New resumes that match will arrive by email, which is often better than re-running the search each week.
  8. Message about one real job, with pay and location in it. Then let Indeed's 3 reminders do the follow-up.

Why the discipline pays: in a Harris Poll run for Indeed in February 2024, 63% of US hiring managers at large firms said they had contacted candidates who were wrong for avoidable reasons such as location, salary or experience level. The same survey put sourcing at an average of 13 hours per role.

8 Indeed resume search strings you can copy

Every string below uses only syntax that Indeed documents on its own Boolean pages, read on 4 October 2026: AND, OR, NOT, parentheses, quotation marks, the skill:, school: and fieldofstudy: fields, and "lives in". I have not run them on a paid Smart Sourcing account for this article, so treat the result counts as yours to judge. Type the operators in capitals.

1. Warehouse forklift operator in one city.

("forklift operator" OR "forklift driver") AND warehouse AND "lives in Columbus"

Indeed's own example is "(forklift operator) AND warehouse". "lives in" narrows to people who state where they live, so drop it if the list is thin.

2. Medical biller with insurance coding.

("medical biller" OR "billing specialist") AND insurance AND (CPT OR "ICD-10")

This extends Indeed's "billing AND insurance" example with the 2 code sets billers usually name.

3. ICU nurse, excluding assistants.

("registered nurse" OR RN) AND skill: ("intensive care unit" OR ICU) NOT "nursing assistant"

skill: points the ICU terms at the skills section rather than anywhere in the resume.

4. Class A truck driver in a metro area.

("truck driver" OR "CDL driver") AND ("Class A" OR "CDL-A") AND (Dallas OR "Fort Worth")

A place name matches anyone whose resume mentions it, including past jobs, which Indeed's guide warns about. Pair it with the location box.

5. Bilingual customer service agent.

("customer service representative" OR "call center agent") AND skill: Spanish AND "lives in Phoenix"

Language is the requirement most often buried in a summary line, so skill: keeps it honest.

6. Staff accountant with a CPA.

(accountant OR "staff accountant") AND (CPA OR "certified public accountant") AND fieldofstudy: accounting

fieldofstudy: reads the education section. Remove it for experienced hires who studied something else.

7. Python developer, no interns.

("software engineer" OR "software developer") AND skill: (Python OR Django) NOT (intern OR internship)

NOT removes anyone whose resume mentions an internship, even years ago. If the pool collapses, delete the NOT clause first.

8. HR generalist with a certification and a named school.

("HR generalist" OR "human resources generalist") AND (SHRM-CP OR PHR) AND school: "Ohio State"

school: is useful for campus pipelines and alumni outreach. For most other searches it shrinks the list too far.

What are the limits of Indeed resume search?

Indeed resume search is strong for active job seekers and narrow for everyone else. The limits are written into Indeed's own pages.

It only finds people who made a public Indeed account

Indeed's 380M figure counts job seeker accounts set to public with a unique, verified email address. Someone happy in their job who never uploaded a resume, or who set it to private, is not in the search, and reaching those people is the job of passive candidate sourcing. Indeed's own guides also cite "245 million resumes" in places. Both are Indeed's own numbers, counted on different pages, and neither covers people who skipped Indeed.

Recency decides quality

Indeed's launch announcement said Smart Sourcing focuses on "people who are actively looking for a new job, especially those active on Indeed over the past 30 days." That is a strength when you hire for roles with many active applicants. It also means a resume that has not been touched in a year sits low, so the recently active filter is the first one to apply.

Contact rules are strict, and breaking them costs the account

Indeed's Smart Sourcing policies ask you to:

Indeed says it "may ban or lock your account if you don't follow these rules." Talent-network pitches and messages promoting several jobs at once are out.

Contact stays inside Indeed, and access runs out

You reach people through Indeed messaging. Indeed's help centre says contacts last 6 months and that you can see a candidate's name and contact info until that time runs out. Each recruiter needs a seat to contact anyone, and Indeed publishes no list of ATS integrations; it says available integrations depend on your account setup. Good first messages still matter inside those limits; our recruiting email templates are a starting point.

Indeed resume search compared with other ways to find candidates

Here is how Indeed resume search sits next to the other common routes. I filled every cell from each vendor's own page on 4 October 2026, in their own figures:

OptionWho is in the poolHow you searchHow you contact peoplePrice on website?
Indeed Smart Sourcing380M+ public Indeed job seeker accountsTitle, location, keywords, Boolean, filters, job matchingIndeed messaging, metered by contactsYes, per user
Monster resume search"10M+" resume database of active candidatesTitle, location, filters such as education and salaryEmail tools; credits used when you view a resumeYes
LinkedIn Recruiter1B+ professionals on LinkedIn40+ filters, keywords and BooleanInMail, up to 150 a month per seatNo, contact sales

The Cognitive~900M public profilesA plain-English brief read into editable filtersVerified email and phone reveals; email and SMS sequences on Sourcing ProYes, from $49/month

The split is simple. Indeed and Monster are resume databases of people who are looking. LinkedIn Recruiter covers employed professionals but keeps you inside InMail. The Cognitive covers people on public profiles who may never have posted a resume anywhere.

How do you find candidates who never posted a resume on Indeed?

You search public profiles instead of resume databases. The reason is in the hiring data: in Gem's 2026 recruiting benchmarks, job boards and company marketing produced about 90% of applications but only about half of hires, and sourced candidates were nearly 8 times more likely to be hired than inbound applicants. Indeed resume search reaches active seekers. The other half of your hires often comes from people who were not looking.

3 routes, from free to paid:

How The Cognitive finds people Indeed cannot see

You describe the role in plain English, and The Cognitive's AI sourcing tool reads the brief into filters you can edit before it runs. When I typed "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU", the filters it produced included "Remote EU", read as Germany plus 7 other countries. It then searches ~900M public profiles.

Every person it returns is judged against your must-haves. Anyone who misses one drops below the people who meet them, and nobody is removed. Each result card opens with a "Why this match" line, 1 or 2 reasons traced to the profile, such as the current role or a skill the person lists. The card carries no fit score.

Contact works differently from Indeed. You reveal verified emails and phone numbers, enriched from 30+ sources, and email and SMS sequences run on the Sourcing Pro plan. Credits are 1 per candidate a search returns, 5 to reveal an email and 10 to reveal a phone number, charged only when a value comes back. When you want to talk to someone, The Cognitive can also run a live, two-way AI video interview at a slot the candidate books. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.

Indeed or The Cognitive: which to use for which role

Keep Indeed resume search for roles where good people are actively applying: hourly, administrative, healthcare support and many mid-level jobs. Its matching works from your job post and its pool is full of people who want to hear from you this month.

Use The Cognitive for senior, niche or technical roles, where most of the people you want have a job and no recent Indeed resume. Many teams run both: Indeed for the active pool, The Cognitive for everyone else. Our full Indeed Smart Sourcing review compares 9 alternatives in detail, and Indeed alternatives covers the job board side.

Common Indeed resume search mistakes

To start, post the job, take the 14-day trial and run the 8 strings above for your own titles. For the people Indeed does not show, run the same role as a plain-English brief in The Cognitive. Its free trial comes with 100 sourcing credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I search resumes on Indeed?

You search resumes on Indeed through Smart Sourcing: sign in to your employer account, click Smart Sourcing, open the Search for Candidates tab and type a job title, a location and keywords. The three dots open Advanced search for years of experience and education, and filters include recently active, willingness to relocate and job type. You need a subscription or the 14-day free trial, and you message people inside Indeed. For people who are not on Indeed, The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief.

Is Indeed resume search free?

No, Indeed resume search is not free beyond a 14-day trial. Eligible employers can trial the Smart Sourcing Professional plan for 14 days, searching and inviting up to 5 contacts, and access ends unless they subscribe. Indeed's help centre says saved searches need an active subscription, and Indeed publishes no free ongoing search. Our free resume search guide covers routes that cost nothing, and The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits.

How much does Indeed resume search cost?

Indeed resume search costs a per-user Smart Sourcing subscription, billed monthly or yearly, and Indeed publishes the price on its Smart Sourcing page in your region's currency. Each recruiter needs a seat to contact candidates. The Professional plan includes 100 contacts a month that roll over for 6 months, with extra contacts sold at a listed per-contact price, and larger teams can sign an Enterprise licence. Our guide to how much Indeed costs has the current figure. The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month.

Is Indeed resume search the same as Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Yes, Indeed resume search is now part of Indeed Smart Sourcing. Indeed's help centre calls the product "Indeed Smart Sourcing (formerly Indeed Resume)", and indeed.com/hire/resume-search redirects to the Smart Sourcing page, read on 4 October 2026. Smart Sourcing adds AI job matching, AI-drafted messages and a Sourcing Assistant on top of the resume search.

Does Indeed resume search support Boolean search?

Yes, Indeed resume search supports Boolean search. Indeed's guides document AND, OR and NOT typed in capitals, parentheses, quotation marks for phrases, and the field operators skill:, school: and fieldofstudy:, plus "lives in" before a place name. A string such as ("registered nurse" OR RN) AND skill: ICU uses only documented syntax. The Cognitive skips the string: you write the role as a plain-English brief and it is read into editable filters.

How big is the Indeed resume database?

Indeed says Smart Sourcing searches more than 380M Sourceable Profiles worldwide, which it defines as job seeker accounts set to public with a unique, verified email address. Some of Indeed's older guides cite a pool of 245 million resumes. Either way, the database only holds people who made a public Indeed account. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles, including people who never posted a resume.

Can I search Indeed resumes by name?

Indeed does not document a search by name. Its help centre describes searching by job title, location and keywords such as skills or company names, read on 4 October 2026, and its rules ask you to contact people about one real, open job that fits them. If you are trying to find one specific person, an Indeed resume search is the wrong tool; a public-profile search is a better start.

How do I view resumes on Indeed as an employer?

You view resumes on Indeed by selecting a candidate's name in Smart Sourcing search results, which opens the full resume. Matched candidates for your job post appear in their own tab. Outside Smart Sourcing, Indeed says Premium Sponsored Jobs let you view candidates whose resumes fit your job description and invite them to apply.

Can I get a candidate's email or phone number from Indeed resume search?

Indeed resume search does not advertise email or phone export; you contact people through Indeed's built-in messaging, which uses your contacts. Indeed's help centre says contacts last 6 months and you can see a candidate's name and contact info until that time runs out. The Cognitive reveals verified emails for 5 credits and phone numbers for 10, charged only when a value comes back.

What is the best alternative to Indeed resume search for passive candidates?

The Cognitive is the alternative I would pick for passive candidates, because it searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief instead of a resume database of active job seekers. Every person is judged against your must-haves, and you can reveal verified emails and phone numbers. LinkedIn Recruiter covers 1B+ professionals through InMail at a price set through sales, and Monster runs another active resume database. I run The Cognitive, so weigh that.
