Indeed Smart Sourcing Review: How It Works, What It Costs and the Best Alternatives

Indeed Smart Sourcing is Indeed's resume database plus AI matching: you search people who set their Indeed job-seeker account to public, see AI-picked matches for your job post, and message them inside Indeed. Indeed counts more than 380M of those profiles. It's very good for active job seekers. It can't reach people who never put a resume on Indeed.

That gap matters. In Gem's 2026 Recruiting Benchmarks, job boards and company marketing brought in roughly 90% of applications but only about half of hires, and sourced candidates were nearly 8 times more likely to be hired than inbound applicants. Indeed covers the first group well. For the second, I'd pair it with The Cognitive, which searches ~900M public profiles, reveals verified contacts and runs a live AI video interview.

Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive, which is one of the alternatives below. Everything I say about Indeed and the other 8 comes from their own websites and help pages, read on 4 October 2026. I haven't used their paid accounts.

Is Indeed Smart Sourcing worth it in 2026?

Yes, if the people you hire are actively looking and keep a resume on Indeed. Hourly, administrative, sales, warehouse and mid-level office roles fit that well, the same roles most hourly hiring software is built around. Indeed's own launch note says the matching focuses on people "active on Indeed over the past 30 days", and the price is on the page.

It's a weaker buy for senior, niche or technical roles where the right person has a job and no live Indeed resume. For those, add one of the alternatives below and keep Indeed for volume.

What is Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Indeed Smart Sourcing is Indeed's candidate sourcing product: a searchable resume database with AI matching, AI-written messages and team tools on top. Indeed's help centre calls it "Indeed Smart Sourcing (formerly Indeed Resume)", and indeed.com/hire/resume-search now redirects to the Smart Sourcing page. So "Indeed resume search" and "Indeed Smart Sourcing" are the same product today. For the search strings and filters themselves, see our Indeed resume search guide.

Indeed launched it on 2 April 2024. The pool is defined in a footnote on the product page: 380M "Sourceable Profiles", meaning job-seeker accounts "set to public that have a unique, verified e-mail address". The "verified" there is the account's email, not a check on the person. Indeed's hiring guide describes them as active candidates "who have opted to be sourced".

How does Indeed Smart Sourcing work?

Indeed's how-to article lays out the workflow. In order:

  1. Get a subscription. Each recruiter needs one, assigned to a single user. There's a 14-day free trial of the Professional plan.
  2. Read your matches. The "Matched candidates" tab shows people who fit one of your job posts. Weak matches usually mean the job post needs work, and Indeed says so; our guide on how to post a job on Indeed covers the fields that matter.
  3. Search the database. Search by job title, location or keywords such as skills or company names. Advanced search adds years of experience and education, and the plan lists filters for willingness to relocate, recently active and job type. Boolean search works too; our Boolean search guide has strings to start from.
  4. Save searches and set alerts. Indeed emails you when new job seekers match a saved search.
  5. Contact people. You message candidates inside Indeed about a specific job post, from a template or an AI draft. Indeed sends up to 3 reminders if the candidate doesn't reply. Contacting candidates draws on the plan's monthly contacts.
  6. Automate it if you want. The Sourcing Assistant takes a selected job and handles outreach for it.

Indeed's policy page also says to message about one real open role and to skip over-qualified candidates; break the rules and Indeed "may ban or lock your account".

What AI does Indeed Smart Sourcing use?

Indeed lists 3 AI features on the Professional plan: AI-powered candidate matching against your job criteria, an "AI Highlighter" that marks relevant skills on a resume, and "Personalized AI-generated messages" written from the resume and your job description. The 2024 launch note adds AI candidate summaries. The page warns: "AI features are not available in certain markets."

Indeed's separate Recruiting Assistant, a Beta feature on its Premium Plus Sponsored Jobs plan, asks applicants AI follow-up questions as they apply and gives a "Smart Fit Score (0-100)". That screens applicants to your posts, not people you sourced.

How is Indeed Smart Sourcing priced?

Indeed Smart Sourcing is a per-user subscription, billed monthly or yearly, with a monthly contact allowance. The Professional plan includes "100 contacts per month (roll over for 6 months)" and lets you buy unlimited extra contacts at a per-contact price. Indeed shows the price on the product page in your region's currency; our guide to how much Indeed costs has the current number.

Indeed Smart Sourcing review: strengths and limits

Strengths. The pool is large and current: 380M public job-seeker accounts, with a "recently active" filter. The people in it chose to be found and are job hunting, so your message lands with someone expecting it. The price is public, there's a trial, and the AI drafts save time on volume roles. Indeed claims matched candidates are "17x more likely to apply"; that's its own, unaudited number.

Limits. The pool is only people with a public Indeed account, which skews to active seekers. Contact runs through Indeed's messaging and draws on your monthly contacts; the feature list advertises no email or phone export, though the help centre says you can see a contacted candidate's contact info for 6 months. Every recruiter pays for a seat. Indeed publishes no ATS integration list; its FAQ says integrations "may depend on your account setup".

In a 2024 Harris Poll for Indeed of 300 large-company US hiring managers, they spent an average of 13 hours per role sourcing, and 63% had contacted candidates who were a poor fit for avoidable reasons like location or salary.

9 Indeed Smart Sourcing alternatives

  1. The Cognitive: best for people who never posted a resume, with verified contacts and a live AI interview.
  2. LinkedIn Recruiter: best if your candidates answer InMail.
  3. ZipRecruiter: best if you already post jobs on ZipRecruiter.
  4. Monster and CareerBuilder: best second upload pool for frontline roles.
  5. Juicebox: best free tier for natural-language people search.
  6. hireEZ: best for searching the open web and your own ATS together.
  7. SeekOut: best for enterprise teams, and for sourcing from inside an AI assistant.
  8. Dice: best for US tech resumes.
  9. Wellfound: best for startups hiring on a small budget.

The Cognitive is first on a rule you can check: it's the only tool on this page that does all 4 of these things. It searches people outside your own database from a plain-English brief, reveals phone numbers as well as emails, runs a live, two-way AI video interview at a slot the candidate books, and sells all of it self-serve at a published monthly price. Juicebox matches 3 of the 4 and has no interview; SeekOut's AI screening is for inbound applicants and sits on its custom tiers; hireEZ screens by voice. The order after #1 is my judgment, closest substitutes for Indeed first.

These are sourcing alternatives. If you want other job sites to post on instead, see Indeed alternatives for job posting. For every resume database side by side, read the best resume databases for recruiters, and for AI-first tools, the best AI sourcing tools.

How do the alternatives compare with Indeed?

I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 4 October 2026. Pool sizes are each vendor's own count and none is audited, ours included.

The 9 alternatives, reviewed

1. The Cognitive: best for people who never posted a resume

Search the people Indeed can't see, get their contact details, then interview the ones you pick.

The Cognitive's AI sourcing tool searches ~900M public profiles, including people with a job who aren't looking. You describe the role in plain English and it's read into filters you can edit. On 30 September 2026 we typed "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU" into the live app; "Remote EU" came back as Germany plus 7 other countries.

Each person is judged against your must-haves, and anyone who misses one drops below the people who meet them. Every result card opens with a "Why this match" line, 1 or 2 reasons traced to the profile, such as "Go listed in skills". There's no fit score. A search costs 1 credit per candidate it returns. Revealing a verified email costs 5 credits and a phone number 10, enriched from 30+ sources and charged only when a value comes back. On the Sourcing Pro plan you can send email and SMS sequences from platform mailboxes; a reply or opt-out on either channel stops both.

Then the step Indeed doesn't have: a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, in 9 languages. Candidates book their own slot without an account, and the invitation tells them the interview is run by AI. The rubric is fixed per role and the questions adapt to each answer. The report gives a 1 to 5 score per criterion, a weighted score out of 100, a suggested verdict, the transcript and the recording, and it checks up to 5 resume claims the AI probed. Nothing is rejected automatically.

Above: a real 5-minute AI interview for a go-to-market role, recorded on 1 September 2026. The AI asks how an outbound email campaign went, then follows up on reply rates and how leads were qualified. The answers are the candidate's own, not claims about The Cognitive.

Best for: senior, niche and passive candidates who aren't on Indeed, when you want an interview report rather than a list.

Watch out for: no resume uploads and no search of your own ATS history; sourced people aren't written into your ATS automatically (it connects to 60+ ATSs and writes the interview note back for candidates imported from the ATS).

Pricing model: monthly plans, cancel anytime. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.

2. LinkedIn Recruiter: best if your candidates answer InMail

The biggest professional network, reached by InMail, sold through sales.

LinkedIn Recruiter now ships with Hiring Assistant, which "taps into LinkedIn's network of 1B+ professionals" and returns a summarized shortlist from your hiring goals. You can still search by hand with "40+ advanced filters, keywords, and Boolean". Outreach is InMail, "up to 150 InMails per month, per seat", and Hiring Assistant can send prescreening questions once someone replies. Recruiter Lite gives 20 filters, your network to the 3rd degree and 30 InMails a month. Compared with Indeed, LinkedIn reaches far more employed professionals, at a price you only get from sales. More in our LinkedIn Recruiter cost guide and LinkedIn Recruiter alternatives.

Best for: in-house teams hiring professionals who respond on LinkedIn.

Watch out for: no email or phone data; InMail is capped per seat.

Pricing model: Recruiter per seat through sales; Recruiter Lite bought online.

3. ZipRecruiter: best if you already post jobs on ZipRecruiter

Another active-seeker resume database, bundled with job posting.

ZipRecruiter's resume database works like Indeed's: people who uploaded a resume while job hunting. In its September 2024 relaunch announcement, ZipRecruiter said 350,000 resumes are added each month and promised "instant access to candidate contact info". When we last read its plans page on 1 October 2026, the database came with the Premium and Pro posting plans, not Standard; the page blocked our reader on 4 October. See ZipRecruiter vs Indeed, and our ZipRecruiter pricing breakdown for how the posting plans differ.

Best for: employers already paying for ZipRecruiter job posts.

Watch out for: no standalone sourcing product; the same active-seeker profile as Indeed.

Pricing model: bundled with job-posting plans.

4. Monster and CareerBuilder: best second upload pool for frontline roles

One resume database and one subscription for 2 old brands.

CareerBuilder + Monster went through Chapter 11 in 2025, as ERE reported on 24 June 2025. Today hiring.careerbuilder.com redirects to hiring.monster.com, and Monster+ Pro posts jobs "on Monster and CareerBuilder" and includes search of "millions of active candidates". It adds email drip campaigns. Credits are shared: they're spent "when candidates click on your job postings and/or when you view resumes".

Best for: a second active-seeker pool next to Indeed for drivers, healthcare support and other frontline hires.

Watch out for: job-post clicks and resume views draw on the same monthly credits.

Pricing model: monthly subscription with credits, cancel anytime; volume pricing by quote.

5. Juicebox: best free tier for natural-language people search

A people-search engine you can try free today.

Juicebox lets you "Search for top talent in natural language" across "800M global profiles and 30+ diverse data sources", and its Agents source and follow up for you. Paid seats include "contact credits (email + phone)" and email outreach. ATS or CRM integration is on Business only, which is "Custom (Available on annual only)". I found no interview step on its pages. See our Juicebox review and Juicebox alternatives.

Best for: solo recruiters who want public-profile search with emails and phones, cheaply.

Watch out for: ATS integration only on the custom annual tier.

Pricing model: free tier, then per seat per month; agents per agent.

6. hireEZ: best for searching the open web and your own ATS together

Open-web profiles and your old applicants in one search, plus voice screening.

hireEZ searches "a billion-plus profiles, 45+ platforms" and integrates with "over 50 ATS partners" to rediscover past applicants, a practice we cover in candidate rediscovery. Outreach runs on "email, SMS, and InMail". Its screening is a voice call: "AI that handles the initial phone screening for you". A solo plan is priced on its pricing page with a 7-day free trial; enterprise is "configured to the stack hireEZ replaces". See our hireEZ review and hireEZ alternatives.

Best for: staffing and enterprise teams with a deep ATS history.

Watch out for: enterprise pricing comes from a consolidation review, not a price list.

Pricing model: solo monthly; enterprise custom.

7. SeekOut: best for enterprise teams, and for sourcing from inside an AI assistant

Large specialist pools, a self-serve seat, and sourcing inside Claude or ChatGPT.

SeekOut searches "1B+ profiles and your ATS". You can "Ask in Plain Language", including from Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot through SeekOut MCP. Sourcing Core is self-serve with "14 days free"; team tiers are "Custom" and "Billed annually". Its AI inbound screening scores applicants against your rubric and is "an add-on for Team and Enterprise plans", per its pricing page. See our SeekOut review and SeekOut alternatives.

Best for: enterprise talent teams that want sourcing, rediscovery and applicant screening from one vendor.

Watch out for: screening and team features sit above the self-serve seat.

Pricing model: Core per seat, self-serve; team tiers custom and annual.

8. Dice: best for US tech resumes

The tech-only version of Indeed's model.

Dice counts "3.7M Tech professionals searchable" (its hiring page says "8.2M Tech pros at your fingertips") and says "99% Dice profiles include a resume, job title, authorization", plus email, location and skills. Paste a job description and its AI matches the tech stack. Contact is by instant message or private email, and candidate views are metered each month.

Best for: US tech recruiters who need work authorization on the profile.

Watch out for: tech only, and profile views are capped.

Pricing model: job slots plus monthly candidate views; prices on the page.

9. Wellfound: best for startups hiring on a small budget

Free job posts to startup-minded candidates, with AI sourcing on top.

Wellfound says 27,000+ companies hire on it, and job posts are free. Its Reach product offers "Self-serve AI agents" that find candidates and send outreach from your real Gmail or Outlook, with monthly contact reveals and a free tier. Autopilot puts a Wellfound recruiter on a role instead.

Best for: seed to growth-stage startups hiring engineers, designers and operators.

Watch out for: its pricing page doesn't say which pool the Reach agents search, so ask before you buy.

Pricing model: free posts; Reach free tier then per seat; Autopilot per role plus a placement fee.

How do you choose between Indeed and an alternative?

Are your candidates on Indeed at all?

Run your role through Indeed's trial and count how many matches you'd actually message. If it's plenty, Indeed is the cheapest way to fill the role. If the list is thin, the people you want probably aren't uploading resumes, and a public-profile tool such as The Cognitive, Juicebox or SeekOut will find more of them.

Do you need emails and phone numbers?

Indeed, LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter keep contact inside their own messaging. The Cognitive reveals verified emails for 5 credits and phone numbers for 10, charged only when a value comes back; Juicebox sells email and phone credits too. If your recruiters work the phone, that decides it.

What happens after the search?

With Indeed, the step after a reply is your own phone screen, on top of the 13 hours per role Indeed's poll found for sourcing. The Cognitive interviews the people you pick with a live AI video interview and gives you a scored report to share.

Who is The Cognitive built for?

The Cognitive is built for the roles Indeed can't fill: the senior engineer or niche specialist who has a job and no public Indeed resume. It's also for small teams that want sourcing and a first interview in one account without a sales call. Keep what already works:

How do you test Indeed Smart Sourcing against an alternative?

Pick one open role and run it through Indeed's 14-day trial and one alternative in the same week. Count 3 numbers for each: people you'd contact, replies in 5 days, and people worth a hiring-manager interview. The common mistake is judging on profile counts; replies and interviews are what you're paying for.

To run the test on The Cognitive, open an account, type the role the way you'd brief a colleague, and invite your top 2 or 3 matches to a live AI interview. You start with a free trial with 100 sourcing credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Indeed Smart Sourcing is Indeed's candidate sourcing product: a resume database with AI matching, AI-written messages and team tools, sold as a per-user subscription. It searches more than 380M Sourceable Profiles, which Indeed defines as job-seeker accounts set to public with a unique, verified email address. You contact people through Indeed's own messaging. To reach people who never posted a resume on Indeed, The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles instead.

How does Indeed Smart Sourcing work?

Indeed Smart Sourcing matches job seekers to your job post and lets you search its resume database, then you message the people you like inside Indeed. The Matched candidates tab shows people who fit a job post; search works by job title, location, keywords and Boolean, with filters such as recently active and willingness to relocate. Saved searches send email alerts, Indeed sends up to 3 reminders to people who don't reply, and the Sourcing Assistant can automate outreach for a job.

How much does Indeed Smart Sourcing cost?

Indeed Smart Sourcing is priced per user, monthly or yearly, with a monthly contact allowance and paid extra contacts. The Professional plan includes 100 contacts a month that roll over for 6 months, every recruiter needs their own subscription, and larger teams can sign an Enterprise licence. Indeed shows the price on its product page in your region's currency; our guide to how much Indeed costs has the number. By comparison, The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month.

Is Indeed Smart Sourcing worth it?

Indeed Smart Sourcing is worth it when the people you hire are actively job hunting and keep a resume on Indeed, such as hourly, administrative and mid-level roles. It's a weaker buy for senior, niche or technical roles, because the pool is limited to public Indeed job-seeker accounts. For those roles, pair it with The Cognitive, which searches ~900M public profiles, reveals verified emails and phone numbers and runs a live AI video interview.

Is Indeed resume search the same as Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Yes, Indeed resume search is now Indeed Smart Sourcing. Indeed's help centre calls the product Indeed Smart Sourcing (formerly Indeed Resume), and indeed.com/hire/resume-search redirects to the Smart Sourcing page. The search, the resume database and the contact allowance all sit inside the Smart Sourcing subscription. For the step-by-step search itself, with example strings, see our guide to Indeed resume search at /blog/indeed-resume-search.

Does Indeed use AI for sourcing?

Yes, Indeed Smart Sourcing uses AI for candidate matching, an AI Highlighter that marks relevant skills, and AI-generated messages, though Indeed says AI features are not available in certain markets. Indeed's separate Recruiting Assistant, in Beta on Premium Plus Sponsored Jobs, asks applicants AI follow-up questions. Neither interviews the people you source. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview with the candidates you pick.

What are the best Indeed Smart Sourcing alternatives?

The best Indeed Smart Sourcing alternative for passive candidates is The Cognitive, which searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief, reveals verified emails and phone numbers and interviews people live with AI. LinkedIn Recruiter suits InMail-first teams, ZipRecruiter and Monster with CareerBuilder are other active-seeker resume databases, Juicebox has a free tier, hireEZ and SeekOut add your own ATS, Dice covers tech resumes and Wellfound covers startups.

Can I get candidate emails and phone numbers from Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Indeed Smart Sourcing does not advertise email or phone export; you contact candidates through Indeed's messaging, which draws on your monthly contacts. Indeed's help centre says you can see a contacted candidate's contact info for 6 months. The Cognitive reveals verified emails for 5 credits and phone numbers for 10, enriched from 30+ sources and charged only when a value comes back.

Indeed Smart Sourcing or LinkedIn Recruiter: which should I pick?

Pick Indeed Smart Sourcing for active job seekers at a published price, and LinkedIn Recruiter for employed professionals who answer InMail, at a price set through sales. LinkedIn reaches 1B+ professionals with up to 150 InMails per seat a month; Indeed reaches 380M public job-seeker accounts. Neither gives you email or phone data. The Cognitive covers people on neither shortlist and reaches them by email and SMS on its Sourcing Pro plan.

Is there a free trial of Indeed Smart Sourcing?

Yes, eligible employers get a 14-day free trial of the Indeed Smart Sourcing Professional plan, with search and up to 5 contacts. Access ends after 14 days unless you buy a subscription. The Cognitive also has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits, so you can run the same role through both in one week.
