Free resume search, and where free actually stops
Free resume search means four different things. A few sites let you read resumes without paying at all. Most let you search free and charge the moment you want contact details. Some cap what free accounts see. The rest are public profiles, not resumes, and the pools are small and self-posted.
The 4 kinds of free in resume search
| What free means | What you can do | Where it stops | Seen on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free to search and free to read | Open a resume list and read titles, locations, skills and salary hopes without an account. | You still have to reach the person, and the site sets those terms separately. | JobSpider serves its resume results page publicly, with no login. |
| Free to search, paid to contact | Run filters, see who exists, read a preview. Pay to open contact details. | The contact button. Monster meters this per resume view, in credits. | Monster, and the per-contact model on Indeed's paid plan. |
| Free but capped | A free tier with a fixed monthly allowance of contact reveals or actions. | The cap. Wellfound publishes 20 contact reveals a month on its free Reach tier. | Wellfound Reach. Jobvertise runs a free account with limits it does not publish. |
| Free public profile, not a resume | Read what someone published themselves, on a platform built for something else. | There is no resume, no salary expectation and no signal that they want a job. | GitHub, where Octoverse 2025 reports more than 180 million developers. |
On prices
This page quotes no vendor prices on purpose. They move, and the same Indeed page serves a different currency and a different number depending on the country you open it from. Read each vendor's own pricing page before you budget.
What a free resume search actually gets you
Free resume search Searching a resume database without paying for the search itself. The pool is made of documents people uploaded about themselves, indexed by title, skills and location rather than by anything an employer verified.
You type a job title into a free resume finder, get a page of self-posted resumes, read three, and hit a paywall at the button that would tell you the person's email address.
Why most free resume databases are smaller than they look
A lifetime resume count is the wrong number to judge a free site by. PostJobFree publishes a rolling 7-day figure on its resume page, counting jobs and resumes posted that week side by side. Read it yourself and the ratio is the whole story: jobs arrive in the millions, resumes in the thousands.
The second problem is who is in there. A resume sits in a free database because its owner put it there while job hunting, and it stays after they stop. So you are reading a document that may be 2 years old, about a person who took a job 18 months ago, alongside every other recruiter working the same list.
8 places to search resumes free
Indeed's employer-side resume search, the default most people mean when they search for a free resume database.
Eligible employers can take a free 14-day trial of the Smart Sourcing Professional plan. Indeed states more than 380M Sourceable Profiles worldwide.
Indeed publishes a trial and a paid plan. It publishes no claim that ongoing search is free.
A startup-focused candidate database with a genuinely standing free tier rather than a trial.
The free Explore tier of Reach lists 20 contact reveals a month and 3 active agents. Posting jobs is a separate product with a free base tier and paid ad placement.
The cap is the point: 20 reveals a month, then you are on a paid seat.
A free job board that also runs a resume search across what jobseekers have posted there.
Its resume page invites you to search the resume database and publishes a rolling count of resumes posted in the last 7 days, so you can judge inflow yourself.
It publishes no total resume count and no employer price, so treat it as a resume finder of unknown depth.
A long-running board advertising a searchable resume pool and a free employer account.
The homepage offers a free account and advertises a search across 2 million resumes, with an asterisk reading that free services are subject to limitations.
The asterisk is never expanded. Find out what the limit is before you build a workflow on it.
An older US board whose resume search results are visible in a browser without logging in.
Its resume results page returns hundreds of profiles with job title, location, skills, salary expectation and a short pitch, readable without an account.
Its employer terms are not reliably reachable, so read them yourself before assuming contact is free.
Not a resume database at all. A place where engineers publish work that a resume can only describe.
GitHub's Octoverse 2025 report states more than 180 million developers work and build on GitHub, with public profiles, repositories and contribution history.
No salary expectation, no availability, no sign anyone wants to move. Read it as evidence, not as intent.
Using a search engine to find resume documents and public profiles that sites never meant to serve as a candidate database.
Google's own operator help documents quotes, site:, the minus sign, filetype: and the before: and after: date filters, which is everything an X-ray search needs.
Whatever you find, the host platform's terms still govern what you may do with it.
The applicant database you already own, holding everyone who applied to your last 10 roles.
Nobody bills you to reopen it, the contact details are already there and verified by an application, and these people once wanted to work for you specifically.
Old applications go stale too. Check the date and confirm the person is still where the record says.
How to search resumes on Indeed
- Create an employer account Sign up on Indeed's employer side. Smart Sourcing is the product that holds resume search, and Indeed lists resume search among the Professional plan's features.
- Start the trial or the plan deliberately Indeed says eligible employers can access a free 14-day trial of the Smart Sourcing Professional plan. Put the end date in your calendar the day you start it.
- Search with filters rather than a name Indeed lists filters including willingness to relocate, recently active and job type. Recently active is the one that protects you from reading a profile nobody has touched in a year. Filter to recently active first, then add job type, then relax location last.
- Read the profile before you spend anything Indeed's footnote defines a Sourceable Profile as a public jobseeker account with a unique verified email address, not an uploaded resume document. Judge what is actually in front of you.
- Spend a contact to reach them The Professional plan lists unlimited resume search but 100 contacts a month, rolling over for 6 months, with additional contacts charged individually. Contacting is the metered action, not looking.
What Indeed does not say about free
Ask whether Indeed resume search is free and you will find several blogs saying that running a search and browsing previews costs nothing. Indeed's own resume search page does not say that. It markets a 14-day trial and a paid Professional plan, and lists resume search as a plan feature. An absence is not a denial, but it is not permission either.
So treat the trial as the free route Indeed actually publishes, and treat everything else as a claim you would be making on Indeed's behalf. If your plan for the quarter depends on free browsing continuing to work, that plan rests on a blog post rather than on anything the vendor has committed to.
Free X-ray search with Google operators
- Quote the title you actually mean Google says a word or phrase inside quotes searches for that exact phrase. This is what stops a search for a senior role returning every mention of the word senior. "senior backend engineer"
- Point site: at one host Google says to enter site: in front of a site or domain to search it alone. Aim it at whichever public profile host or portfolio service your candidates actually use. site:github.com "senior backend engineer" Berlin
- Subtract the noise with a minus sign A minus in front of a word leaves that word out. On any resume search engine query the words to remove first are the ones that signal a job advert rather than a person. "senior backend engineer" -jobs -hiring -apply
- Use filetype: to find posted documents Google says to enter filetype: in front of the file type. This is the operator that finds resume documents people uploaded to their own site or to a university page. "backend engineer" resume filetype:pdf
- Force freshness with after: Google documents before: and after: in front of a year or a specific date, and says they can be combined. Nothing else on this page fixes the stale-resume problem so directly. "backend engineer" resume filetype:pdf after:2025-01-01
Reading public profiles against scraping them
Do
- Read a public page in a browser, the way any visitor would
- Note what you saw and which site you saw it on
- Contact people through the platform's own messaging, or a channel they published
- Ask the person for their CV rather than hunting for an old copy of it
Do not
- Running scrapers, crawlers or browser add-ons against LinkedIn to copy profiles
- Using bots or other unauthorised automated methods to access it or download contacts
- Copying, displaying or distributing profile data without the content owner's consent
- Buying the same data back from an aggregator and assuming that fixes it
Before you trust a resume you found free
- Find the posting date, and treat anything undated as old
- Check whether the person is still in the job the resume claims
- Confirm the email is live before you count them as reachable
- Record which site the profile came from, and when you opened it
- Do not re-post or forward the resume outside your hiring team
- Note the search you ran, so a colleague is not repeating it tomorrow
- Keep the record at least a year: EEOC rules require personnel records kept for one year
Resume database, your ATS and a sourcing index
| Resume database | Your ATS | Sourcing index | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is in it | People who uploaded a resume to that site while job hunting. | People who applied to you, plus anyone your team added by hand. | Working professionals, whether or not they are looking. |
| How they got there | They posted it themselves, once. | They applied to one of your roles, or you imported them. | Their public professional footprint was indexed. |
| How fresh it is | As fresh as the day they stopped job hunting. | As fresh as your last hiring round for that skill. | Refreshed continuously, independent of anyone's job search. |
| What opening a record costs | Often metered. Monster bills resume views in credits; Indeed's paid plan meters contacts. | Nothing. You already hold it. | Depends on the vendor, usually contact reveal rather than viewing. |
| What you can do next | Read it, then pay to make contact. | Re-approach someone who already wanted to work here. | Approach someone who has never heard of the role. |
When a free resume search stops being cheap
The cost of free resume search for employers is never the subscription. It is the afternoon spent reading 40 self-posted documents to find 4 people worth an email, and then discovering that 2 of them changed jobs last spring. Nothing in a free resume database tells you which of those 40 is worth the hour.
That is a search problem, not a budget problem. A keyword match on a resume cannot tell you whether the person knows Kubernetes or whether their employer merely runs it, and it cannot tell you that a strong candidate never posted a resume anywhere because they were never looking.
Searching people who never posted a resume
A 1-line brief becomes a ranked search. Example values, identities masked.
The Cognitive works the other side of this problem. Describe the hire in 1 sentence and it parses that into filters in 2 groups, about the person and about their current employer, then searches ~900M profiles and ranks what comes back.
What to remember
- Free means 4 different things, and only one of them includes making contact
- Indeed publishes a 14-day trial and a paid plan, not a free-search claim
- X-ray search costs nothing, and the host platform's terms still apply to what you find
- Record what you searched, where the profile came from, and when
Paying only when a contact is real
The shortlist, with identities masked until a contact is revealed. Contact values are shape-only.
Against a metered per-view model, the shape here is different. Identities stay masked while you read, and contact enrichment happens per field: email and phone are revealed separately, and a reveal that finds nothing does not charge. Everyone found for a role stays in that role's pool, so rediscovery is the default and later searches skip them.

Frequently asked questions
Is resume search free on Indeed?
Indeed publishes a free 14-day trial of the Smart Sourcing Professional plan for eligible employers, and lists resume search among that plan's features. It does not publish any statement that ongoing search without a subscription is free. Several blogs say browsing previews costs nothing; Indeed's own page does not say it. Treat the trial as the free route Indeed actually commits to.
How do I search resumes on Indeed?
Create an employer account, open Smart Sourcing, and search with the filters Indeed lists, including willingness to relocate, recently active and job type. Read the profile before spending anything: Indeed defines a Sourceable Profile as a public jobseeker account with a verified email, not an uploaded resume. Contacting is the metered step, not looking.
How much does Indeed resume search cost?
Indeed sells resume search inside the Smart Sourcing Professional plan, billed monthly or annually, with 100 contacts a month, a 6-month rollover and additional contacts charged per contact. The figure itself moves and the same page serves a different currency and a different number depending on your country, so read Indeed's own pricing page rather than any number quoted on a blog, including this one.
Can I see resumes for free without an employer account?
Sometimes. Some boards leave resume results publicly browsable, and JobSpider serves its results page without a login. Google X-ray with filetype: works as a free resume finder for documents people published themselves. Most databases, though, want a free account to search and a paid plan before they will show you contact details.
What is the best free resume database for recruiters?
There is no single winner, because the pools on these resume search websites differ by who posts to them. Wellfound Reach suits startup and tech hiring and publishes a free tier with 20 contact reveals a month. PostJobFree and Jobvertise suit general roles. For engineers, GitHub shows work rather than claims. Pick by the role you are filling, then check that site's current limits yourself.
Can I search resumes by name?
Free resume search sites index by job title, skills and location, and none of the vendor pages reviewed here publishes a name-lookup feature. Indeed's published filters are things like willingness to relocate, recently active and job type. If you need to find one specific person, check the platform's own help documentation rather than assuming a name search exists.
Is it legal to search for resumes on Google or LinkedIn?
Reading a public page in a browser is different from scraping it. LinkedIn's User Agreement prohibits using software, scripts, robots, crawlers or browser add-ons to scrape or copy profiles, prohibits bots and unauthorised automated access, and restricts copying or distributing profile data without the owner's consent. Read each platform's terms, and take your own legal advice for anything at scale.
How long should I keep a resume I found?
EEOC regulations require employers to keep all personnel or employment records for one year. If a discrimination charge is filed, records relating to the investigation must be kept until final disposition, which the EEOC defines through the expiry of the 90-day period for the charging party to sue or the end of any litigation and appeals. State rules and your own counsel may require longer.
Does ZipRecruiter have a resume database?
ZipRecruiter sells employer plans that include candidate search, and publishes its current plans and terms on its own site. Its pricing pages block automated readers, so this page states no figure, price or free-tier claim for it. Check ZipRecruiter's own pricing page directly before comparing it with anything here.
How do I find my own resume on Indeed?
This page is written for employers searching for candidates, not for jobseekers. If you are trying to find a resume you uploaded, sign in to your own Indeed jobseeker account and open your profile, where your uploaded documents live. Indeed's own help pages cover retrieving and updating them.
