Recruitment Chatbots Compared: 9 Conversational AI Tools, and What to Use When Chat Isn't Enough

The best recruiting chatbot in 2026 is Paradox for hourly hiring at scale, Sense for staffing agencies and Humanly for high-volume teams that want chat, voice and video in one place. A recruitment chatbot answers candidate questions, asks screening questions and books interviews by text or chat. When a role needs a real conversation instead, The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview that candidates book themselves.

Candidates are wary of being judged by software. In a Gartner survey published on 31 July 2025, only 26% of job candidates said they trust AI to evaluate them fairly. So pick a chatbot that is quick, clear that it is AI, and honest about what it decides.

The best AI recruiting chatbots in 2026

  1. The Cognitive: best when a chatbot isn't enough. It is not a chatbot; it runs a live AI video interview after (or instead of) chat screening.
  2. Paradox: best for hourly and frontline hiring at enterprise scale.
  3. Humanly: best for high-volume teams that want chat, voice and video interviews together.
  4. Sense: best for staffing agencies on Bullhorn, Avionté or JobDiva.
  5. Phenom: best for large employers that want the chatbot on their careers site.
  6. Fountain: best for frontline operations that want AI agents past the hire.
  7. Talkpush: best for BPO and contact center hiring over WhatsApp and Messenger.
  8. ConverzAI: best for staffing firms that want a voice recruiter paid per placement.
  9. HireVue: best for HireVue customers who want chat on the careers site.
  10. XOR: best for small blue-collar teams that want text, chat and video in one tool.

Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive. It is not a recruiting chatbot, and I don't rank it as the best one. I list it first for one checkable reason: of the 10, it is the only tool that runs a live, two-way AI video interview at a slot the candidate books, in an account you can open without a sales call, at a published monthly price. The 9 chatbots after it are in my order of judgment, from their own websites read on 4 October 2026; I have not used them on a paid account.

What is a recruiting chatbot?

A recruiting chatbot is software that holds a text conversation with job candidates so a recruiter doesn't have to. You will also see it called a recruitment chatbot, a recruiting bot, an AI chatbot for recruitment or conversational AI recruiting software. Most do 3 jobs:

Recruitment chatbot examples come in 3 kinds: careers-site chat (Phenom Talent Companion, HireVue Match and Apply), messaging-first tools for hourly hiring (Paradox, Fountain, Talkpush, XOR) and staffing tools that sit on an agency ATS (Sense, ConverzAI). Several now add voice calls or AI interviews. A chatbot works best when the questions have yes or no answers, and worst when you need to hear how someone thinks.

How do the top recruitment chatbots compare?

Here is how they stack up. I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 4 October 2026:

How did we judge these recruiting chatbots?

We started with 10 conversational AI vendors that sell to recruiting teams: Paradox, Humanly, XOR, Sense, Phenom, Fountain, ConverzAI, HireVue, Mya and Talkpush. A chatbot made the cut if it is sold today, runs candidate conversations itself, and does at least 2 of the 3 core jobs: answering questions, screening and scheduling.

Mya dropped out. StepStone acquired it in May 2021, and on 4 October 2026 mya.com redirected to The Stepstone Group's homepage, which doesn't mention Mya.

We ordered the other 9 on 4 criteria: proof at volume (named customers and published results), channel coverage, clarity about what it scores, and whether it shows any price. XOR sits last because its homepage still carries placeholder text. We could not test any of the 9 on a live account, so nothing here is a speed or accuracy benchmark. The Cognitive is described from our own app.

How do you choose a recruiting chatbot?

4 questions narrow this list fast.

Is your hiring hourly and high volume, or professional and low volume?

This decides most of the list. Paradox, Fountain, Talkpush, Humanly and XOR are built for roles where you hire hundreds of similar people and the screening questions are yes or no. Match the channel too: Talkpush reaches people on WhatsApp and Messenger, while Phenom and HireVue only reach people who visit your careers site. For a senior engineer or an account executive, a chatbot can't tell you much, and a live AI interview tells you more. For the volume end, our lists of hourly hiring software and high-volume hiring platforms go wider than chat.

Does it score candidates, and can the vendor show a bias audit?

Ask this in the first call. Humanly, Talkpush, XOR and Sense say on their own sites that they score, rank or match candidates. Sense links to a third-party bias audit page from its homepage. If you hire in New York City, a score that substantially assists your decision can bring the tool under Local Law 144.

Will candidates trust it?

Many won't, by default. A Pew Research Center survey from April 2023 found Americans oppose AI making final hiring decisions by 71% to 7%, and 66% said they would not want to apply to an employer that uses AI to help decide. Tell candidates up front that the tool is AI, and keep a person on every decision.

What does conversational recruiting software cost?

Almost none of it has a public price. 6 of the 9 chatbots sell by demo or quote, Sense shows starting prices behind a demo or RFP, ConverzAI charges per placement, and XOR advertises a per-hire offer for blue-collar roles. The Cognitive publishes its prices and is self-serve: AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month. Our AI recruiting software pricing guide covers the wider market.

The 10 recruiting chatbots and alternatives, reviewed

1. The Cognitive: best when a chatbot isn't enough

Verdict: the step after a chatbot, for screening that needs a real conversation.

The Cognitive is AI recruiting software that sources candidates across ~900M public profiles and interviews them live with AI. The interview is a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, in 9 languages. Candidates book their own slot without creating an account, and the invitation tells them the interview is run by AI. The rubric is fixed for the role, and the questions adapt live to each answer, so a vague answer gets a follow-up instead of a checkbox.

You get a report with a 1 to 5 score per criterion, a weighted score out of 100, a suggested verdict, overall written feedback, the transcript and the recording. The AI also probes up to 5 resume claims and marks each one verified, refuted or unclear. Nothing is rejected automatically.

This 5-minute recording shows a live AI interview for a go-to-market role. The AI asks the candidate about an outbound email campaign they ran, then follows up on their reply rates and on how they qualified leads, instead of moving to the next scripted question.

The trade-off is plain. The Cognitive doesn't answer careers-site FAQs, run SMS screening chats or book interviews with your hiring managers. Its outreach is email and SMS sequences on the Sourcing Pro plan, sent from platform mailboxes, and a reply or opt-out on either channel stops both. If you need a bot that asks "Can you work weekends?" to 5,000 applicants, pick one of the 9 below.

Pick it if your roles need a real first conversation, or your chatbot passes too many people who then fail the first call. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, both self-serve. Our page on how the AI interviewer works shows the interview step by step.

2. Paradox: best for hourly and frontline hiring at enterprise scale

Verdict: the most proven recruiting chatbot for hourly volume, now owned by Workday.

Paradox calls itself "Conversational hiring software that gets work done for you". Its assistant, Olivia, validates qualifications "through chat or text" and lets candidates pick their own interview slot. Workday completed its acquisition of Paradox on 1 October 2025, though paradox.ai still runs under the Paradox brand and names Workday and SAP SuccessFactors as integrations.

The results it publishes are large. Compass Group hires 120,000 workers a year with 20 recruiters, and a Workday customer story says Chipotle cut application-to-start time from 12 days to 4 and lifted application completion from 50% to 85%. Both are vendor-reported. Paradox holds 4.5 out of 5 from 94 G2 reviews. No price is published; the pricing page asks for a demo. Our Paradox review and Paradox alternatives go deeper.

Pick it if you hire thousands of hourly workers a year and already run Workday or SAP SuccessFactors.

3. Humanly: best for high-volume teams that want chat, voice and video interviews together

Verdict: a chatbot that also interviews, aimed squarely at hourly and frontline hiring.

Humanly sells itself as an "AI Recruiting Platform for High-Volume Hiring" and reaches candidates "across SMS, email, chat, and more." Beyond chat, it runs structured AI video, voice and async interviews on the candidate's schedule, and it sells its own ATS. It holds 4.8 out of 5 from 129 G2 reviews.

Humanly is explicit that it scores. Its site promises to "Evaluate, score, and schedule candidates automatically" and to deliver "A ranked shortlist with transcripts behind every name." If you hire in New York City, ask for its bias audit. Pricing is by demo only.

Pick it if you hire hourly or frontline staff at volume and want one vendor for chat, screening interviews and scheduling.

4. Sense: best for staffing agencies on Bullhorn, Avionté or JobDiva

Verdict: the chatbot with the deepest staffing ATS coverage on this list.

Sense pitches itself as a way to "Turn your ATS into an active talent engine." Its AI chatbot handles FAQs, pre-screening, job matching and instant apply, and it adds AI phone calls for screening and reference checks, plus interview scheduling. It talks to candidates by SMS, WhatsApp, email and chat, and integrates with Bullhorn, Avionté, JobDiva, Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS and others.

Sense is the only chatbot here that shows starting prices, for a talent acquisition plan and a staffing plan, though a demo or RFP still comes first. Its candidate matching ranks people, and its homepage links to a third-party bias audit of that feature. If you are choosing the agency ATS underneath it, see our guide to staffing software for temp and contract firms.

Pick it if you run a staffing desk and want to re-engage the candidates already in your agency ATS.

5. Phenom: best for large employers that want the chatbot on their careers site

Verdict: a careers-site assistant that turns visitors into applicants, sold as part of an enterprise suite.

Phenom's chatbot is now called Talent Companion, which Phenom describes as "the always-on guide" that matches candidates to jobs and walks them "to a finished application". It finishes the application inside the chat, asks screening questions, books interviews and answers questions from a knowledge base. Phenom reports 49% more leads than a legacy chatbot.

Talent Companion ranks jobs for the candidate; candidate scoring is sold separately as Phenom Fit Score. Phenom serves "500+ leading global brands" and publishes no price.

Pick it if your careers site gets heavy traffic and you already run, or plan to run, Phenom's wider platform.

6. Fountain: best for frontline operations that want AI agents past the hire

Verdict: a frontline hiring platform that has moved from chatbot to a team of AI agents.

Fountain now calls itself "The #1 agent that runs your frontline operations". Its recruiting agent, Anna, screens and interviews candidates; other agents handle support and retention. A 2023 launch added WhatsApp and SMS conversations with in-chat interview scheduling, and the homepage says it connects to 40+ systems. Fountain holds 4.3 out of 5 from 128 G2 reviews.

Fountain is "Built for frontline industries" and does not position itself for salaried roles. Pricing is a custom quote.

Pick it if you hire for restaurants, retail or logistics and want the same vendor to cover onboarding and retention. For the human round after the bot, our restaurant interview questions and retail interview questions are ready to use.

7. Talkpush: best for BPO and contact center hiring over WhatsApp and Messenger

Verdict: the messaging-first choice for high-volume hiring outside email-heavy markets.

Talkpush promises "Hiring at scale that feels like a conversation" and says it is built for teams "filling 500 to 50,000 roles annually". It reaches candidates on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, SMS and TikTok, and adds Talkscore voice assessments, which suit contact center roles where speaking is the job.

Talkpush says it can "Score and rank candidates in less than 5 minutes even without a resume." It holds 4.6 out of 5 from 23 G2 reviews, where one reviewer mentions occasional bugs during peak hiring season. Pricing is by quote. See also our page on BPO and staffing hiring, and our BPO agent hiring case study for how one contact center cut its agent hiring costs.

Pick it if you hire contact center agents in large batches and your candidates live on WhatsApp.

8. ConverzAI: best for staffing firms that want a voice recruiter paid per placement

Verdict: closer to an AI phone recruiter than a chatbot, with an unusual pricing model.

ConverzAI sells a Virtual Recruiter "powered by Agentic AI" that keeps candidate conversations going by text, email and voice calls. It runs role-specific screening interviews, sends reminders and chases paperwork. Its named integrations are staffing systems: Bullhorn, Avionté, Ceipal, Erecruit, JobDiva, LaborEdge, Salesforce, TargetRecruit, TempWorks and Tracker.

The pricing model stands out: "Pay only for placements, nothing else!" The trade-off is thin evidence. It holds 4.1 out of 5 from only 8 G2 reviews, and it is built for agencies, not in-house teams.

Pick it if you run a staffing agency and would rather pay per placement than per seat.

9. HireVue: best for HireVue customers who want chat on the careers site

Verdict: a careers-site chat that makes most sense next to HireVue's interviews and assessments.

HireVue's current chat product is Match and Apply, which it describes as software that "converts career site visitors into qualified applicants in one conversation." It asks qualifying questions synced from your ATS, offers scheduling and answers FAQs. HireVue holds 4.1 out of 5 from 255 G2 reviews, for the whole platform.

Text recruiting is no longer featured on HireVue's homepage or pricing page, and there is no public price. If HireVue's interviews are what you're unsure about, see our HireVue alternatives.

Pick it if you already run HireVue interviews or assessments and want the careers-site chat from the same vendor.

10. XOR: best for small blue-collar teams that want text, chat and video in one tool

Verdict: broad features on paper, but the website needs a careful look before you buy.

XOR says its conversational AI can "screen your candidates, score them, and then schedule interviews right on your calendar," with outbound campaigns over text and WhatsApp, plus live and on-demand video interviewing. It claims "35+ Integrations Ready-to-Go" without naming them on its homepage.

The limit is upkeep. On 4 October 2026, XOR's homepage and integrations page still showed "Lorem ipsum" placeholder text, and its G2 page shows 4.6 out of 5 from 5 reviews, all from 2020 and 2021.

Pick it if you hire blue-collar roles in small numbers and a demo confirms the integrations you need.

Where do chatbots in recruitment fall short?

Chatbots in recruitment are good at speed and bad at judgment. They fall short in 4 places:

The usual fix is a second step. Keep the chatbot for FAQs, knockout questions and scheduling, then put the people who pass through a real conversation: a recruiter's phone screen, or a live AI interview with follow-up questions and a scored report, which is the job The Cognitive does. For the format itself, read our AI video interviewing guide, and for the recruiter's call, our first-round interview questions.

Do recruiting chatbots have to disclose AI, and does NYC Local Law 144 apply?

Always disclose it, and check local rules if the tool scores. The laws that matter most in 2026:

This applies to The Cognitive too. Its report scores each criterion and gives a weighted score out of 100, so a New York City employer using that score to decide who advances should treat it as in scope. The Cognitive has no published bias audit, and nothing is rejected automatically. Our NYC Local Law 144 guide explains what the law asks of employers, and our roundup of AI screening compliance laws covers the other states. This section is a summary, not legal advice.

Who is The Cognitive built for?

We built The Cognitive for roles where the first conversation is the screen: sales, customer success, engineering, operations and specialist hires, where a yes or no answer tells you very little. It's built to stand in for the first phone screen, with every candidate for a role scored on the same rubric.

It sits next to what you already run:

How do you test a recruiting chatbot before you buy?

Ask every vendor for a sandbox and run 3 tests. Apply to your own job from a phone and time how long it takes to book an interview. Ask the bot 3 questions your FAQ doesn't cover and see whether it admits it doesn't know. Then ask, in writing, what the tool scores, who audited it, and how candidates are told it is AI.

If your roles need more than a chatbot, judge an AI interview the same way: read a full report and watch the recording before you trust its score. The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI recruiting chatbot in 2026?

Paradox is the most proven AI recruiting chatbot for hourly hiring at scale, and it is now owned by Workday. Humanly suits high-volume teams that want chat, voice and video interviews from one vendor, and Sense suits staffing agencies on Bullhorn, Avionté or JobDiva. If your roles need a real conversation rather than knockout questions, The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview instead.

What does a recruitment chatbot do?

A recruitment chatbot answers candidate questions, asks screening questions and books interviews, by text, WhatsApp or web chat. Most pull answers from a knowledge base you control and sync results to your ATS. Several, including Humanly, Sense and Talkpush, also score or rank candidates, and some add voice calls.

What are some recruitment chatbot examples?

Paradox's Olivia, Phenom Talent Companion, HireVue Match and Apply, Fountain's Anna, Talkpush, Sense, Humanly, ConverzAI's Virtual Recruiter and XOR are all recruitment chatbot examples in 2026. They split into careers-site chat, messaging-first tools for hourly hiring, and staffing tools that sit on an agency ATS.

Is The Cognitive a recruiting chatbot?

No. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes that candidates book themselves, with a scored report, transcript and recording. It doesn't answer careers-site FAQs or run SMS screening chats. It fits after a chatbot screen, or instead of one for roles that need a real conversation.

What is conversational AI recruiting?

Conversational AI recruiting means using software that talks to candidates in natural language, by chat, text, voice or video, to answer questions, screen and schedule. Chatbots like Paradox and Talkpush do it over text. The Cognitive does it as a live AI video interview with follow-up questions.

How much does conversational recruiting software cost?

Most conversational recruiting software has no public price. Paradox, Humanly, Phenom, Fountain, Talkpush and HireVue sell by demo or quote, Sense shows starting prices with a demo or RFP, and ConverzAI charges per placement. The Cognitive publishes its prices: AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.

Do recruiting chatbots have to tell candidates they are AI?

Yes, in a growing number of places, and it's good practice everywhere. Illinois has required notice when AI is used in employment decisions since 1 January 2026, and Colorado's notice rules start on 1 January 2027. In The Cognitive, the interview invitation tells candidates the interview is run by AI.

Does NYC Local Law 144 apply to recruiting chatbots?

It can, if the chatbot scores or ranks candidates in a way that substantially assists hiring decisions for New York City roles. The law then requires a bias audit within one year of use, a public audit summary and notice 10 business days before use. A chatbot that only answers FAQs and books slots is unlikely to count. The Cognitive's interview scores could be in scope, and it has no published bias audit.

What are the drawbacks of chatbots in recruitment?

Chatbots in recruitment can't judge how someone thinks, and they pass anyone who answers yes to self-reported questions. 7 of the 9 chatbots in this guide lead with hourly, frontline, contact center or staffing hiring. Gartner found 25% of candidates trust an employer less if it uses AI to evaluate them, so disclosure and a human decision matter.

Is Mya still available as a recruiting chatbot?

No. StepStone acquired Mya in May 2021 and folded its technology into StepStone's matching platform. On 4 October 2026, mya.com redirected to The Stepstone Group's homepage. Paradox, Humanly and Talkpush are the closest current options for high-volume chat screening.
