Hiring Platforms Compared: The 10 Best for Finding and Screening Candidates in 2026

The Cognitive is the best hiring platform for employers in 2026 when the people you need aren't applying. Of the 10 hiring platforms compared here, it's the only one that searches outside your database, across ~900M public profiles, and then interviews the people you pick in a live, two-way AI video interview, at a published price with no sales call. Most employers pair it with an applicant tracking system such as Workable or Greenhouse.

The inbox explains why. Applications per role more than doubled, from about 115 in 2022 to 244 in 2025, while recruiter teams were cut in half, according to Greenhouse's March 2026 benchmark report. Yet job boards and company channels bring in roughly 90% of applications and only about half of hires, Gem's 2026 benchmarks found. The other half comes through channels like sourcing and referrals, where someone went looking.

The best hiring platforms for employers in 2026

  1. The Cognitive: best for finding people who haven't applied and interviewing them live with AI.
  2. Workable: best all-in-one platform for a growing company.
  3. Manatal: best low-cost ATS with outside search built in.
  4. Greenhouse: best for structured hiring at scale.
  5. Ashby: best for teams that run hiring on reports.
  6. Gem: best for in-house teams that source a lot.
  7. Lever: best ATS and CRM in one for mid-sized teams.
  8. Teamtailor: best for a careers site that does the selling.
  9. BambooHR: best if hiring should live inside your HR system.
  10. Indeed Smart Sourcing: best job-board-native way to search people looking for work.

Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive. It ranks first on one test you can check yourself: it's the only platform here that finds people outside your own database and runs a live, two-way AI video interview with them, in an account you open without a sales call, at a published price. The order after #1 is my judgment for a typical employer of 50 to 1,000 people, with a tilt toward platforms you can price and try on your own. I have not used the other 9 on a paid account. What I say about them comes from their own websites, read on 3 October 2026.

What is a hiring platform?

A hiring platform is software an employer uses to find candidates, screen them and move them to an offer. Buyers also call it hiring software or an online hiring platform. A hiring tool usually does one of those jobs; a platform does several, or connects the ones it doesn't do.

The 10 on this page come in 4 kinds:

Job boards are a different purchase. They bring applicants to you, and every platform above can post to them. If posting is what you need, our guide to the best job posting sites for employers compares them. Two sibling lists cover narrower buyers: hiring software for small business for teams with no recruiter, and the best AI recruitment platforms for AI-first tools only.

How do the best hiring platforms compare?

Here is how they stack up. I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 3 October 2026:

"Finds people who haven't applied" means a built-in search over profiles outside your own database. A browser extension counts as partly.

How did we rank these hiring tools?

I started with 10 candidates and dropped Pin, a sourcing tool covered on our AI-only list. To make the cut, a product had to help an employer find candidates or move them through hiring, by its own website's account. Job boards that only post ads were left out.

The Cognitive sits first on the test in the disclosure above. I checked both halves against all 9 others. 4 of them search outside your database: Workable, Manatal, Gem and Indeed Smart Sourcing. Greenhouse and Ashby do it partly, through prospecting tools and a browser extension. None of the 4 runs a live, two-way AI video interview. Greenhouse runs a two-way AI interview, but by voice, sold by demo as an annual subscription. Manatal comes closest on both halves. Its AI interview is asynchronous, and its add-on price isn't on the pricing page.

After #1, I weighed 3 things for a typical employer: how much of the hiring chain the platform covers natively, whether you can see a price, and whether you can start without a sales call. That's why Workable sits second and Teamtailor, a strong product sold only by quote, sits eighth.

Should you buy an all-in-one hiring platform or separate tools?

Buy an all-in-one platform when your problem is process, such as candidates tracked in spreadsheets and interview feedback lost in email. Workable, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Manatal and Teamtailor all fix that, and one login is easier for hiring managers.

Add a separate tool when one stage is leaking. The most common leak is the top of the funnel. Your ATS fills with applicants, but the people you'd hire for a senior or specialist role aren't among them. A sourcing and interview layer like The Cognitive fixes that stage and connects to the ATS you already have. It works with 60+ ATSs, including all 8 ATS-style platforms on this list.

Switching cost decides the rest. Replacing an ATS means moving candidate history and retraining hiring managers. Adding a layer means one integration and one trial role.

How do you choose a hiring platform?

Is your problem too many applicants or too few good ones?

Recruiters handle 93% more applications than in 2021, Gem's 2026 benchmarks found. If the inbox is your problem, pick an ATS with strong screening, such as Workable's agent or Lever's screening add-on. If the right people aren't in the inbox at all, you need a platform that goes and finds them. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles and judges each person against the must-haves in your brief.

What's the best hiring platform for a growing company?

For a company growing from about 50 to a few hundred people, Workable is the safest single system: published prices, a 15-day trial and an AI agent that sources outside your database. Ashby suits a startup that wants data on every stage. Once you have an ATS, add The Cognitive for the roles that stall, without moving systems.

Do you need a platform that finds and screens candidates?

Few do both. Workable and Gem find people outside your database but don't interview them with AI. Greenhouse interviews by voice and sells it through a demo. Manatal has both pieces, with 10 outside searches a month on its 2 lower plans and an asynchronous video interview. The Cognitive does both in one account: it finds the people, then runs a 10 or 20 minute live AI video interview scored against your rubric.

Will it work with the systems you already have?

Ask which records sync and in which direction. Indeed says Smart Sourcing's ATS options "may depend on your account setup and hiring workflow." BambooHR's ATS hands hires straight to employee records, which is its whole point. The Cognitive writes a note with the score, summary and report link back to your ATS for candidates it imported from there. People you source inside The Cognitive aren't written into the ATS automatically.

The 10 best hiring platforms of 2026, reviewed

1. The Cognitive: best for finding people who haven't applied and interviewing them live with AI

The Cognitive is AI recruiting software that does 2 jobs most hiring platforms leave to you: finding people outside your applicant pool and holding the first interview. It isn't an ATS, so it doesn't post jobs or send offers. It works beside the ATS you already run.

You start by describing the role in plain English. The app reads the brief into filters you can edit. When I typed "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU", "Remote EU" became Germany plus 7 other countries.

Every person found is judged against the must-haves in your brief. Anyone who misses one drops below the people who meet them. Nobody is removed. Each result card opens with a "Why this match" line giving 1 or 2 reasons traced to the profile, such as the current role or a skill listed on it. A search costs 1 credit per candidate it returns, 5 to reveal an email and 10 to reveal a phone number, and a reveal is only charged when a value comes back. On the Sourcing Pro plan you can send email and SMS sequences from platform mailboxes.

Then comes the interview. Candidates book their own slot without making an account, and the invitation tells them the interview is run by AI. The rubric stays fixed for the role while the questions adapt live, so a vague answer gets a follow-up. It runs 10 or 20 minutes in any of 9 languages.

The recording above is a 5-minute live AI interview for a go-to-market role. The AI asks about an outbound email campaign, then follows up on reply rates and on how leads were qualified.

The report scores each criterion 1 to 5 with written feedback, rolls them into a weighted score out of 100 with a suggested verdict, and includes the transcript and recording. Nothing is rejected automatically.

Pick it if your hardest roles are filled by people who aren't applying, and you want them interviewed before anyone spends an hour on a call. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, monthly and cancel anytime.

2. Workable: best all-in-one platform for a growing company

Workable calls itself "agentic software for recruiting and HR" and says it's "Trusted by 35,000+ teams worldwide". It covers job posting to "200+ job boards", a careers page, scheduling, offers and a full HR system after the hire. Its AI agent "Searches 400M+ profiles" and evaluates each applicant "against up to 14 job criteria".

The price is on the pricing page by company size, and there's a 15-day trial. Two catches sit on the same page: "Free trial does not include Workable Agent", and the agent runs on AI credits that "expire 1 year from purchase". Its video interviews, an add-on on the Standard plan, are one-way, so nobody follows up on a weak answer.

Pick it if you're a company of roughly 20 to 1,000 people replacing spreadsheets or an old ATS and want hiring and HR in one place.

3. Manatal: best low-cost ATS with outside search built in

Manatal is "Tailored for HR teams, recruitment agencies, and headhunters" and posts to "2,500+ Organic & Premium Channels". Prices are per user per month and published, with a 14-day trial and "pricing without lock-in contract".

It's the only ATS here that bundles an outside profile database with an AI video interviewer. The Sourcing Hub reaches "over 700 million candidates beyond your existing network", but the 2 lower plans get 10 searches a month. The AI Interviewer is an add-on that runs "automated, asynchronous video interviews", and its price isn't on the pricing page. Our Manatal alternatives list covers other ATSs to compare it with.

Pick it if budget leads the decision and you want an ATS with a little outside sourcing and AI screening from day one.

4. Greenhouse: best for structured hiring at scale

Greenhouse sells "Better signal. Human judgment. One platform." Every plan on its pricing page includes "Structured interview kits & scorecards", scheduling, an AI Notetaker and reporting. Sourcing means prospect pools, a prospecting Chrome plugin and contact lookups.

Its Voice AI "runs a two-way voice interview on the candidate's schedule, with dynamic follow-up questions," in 11 languages, and works with or without the Greenhouse ATS. It's sold as an annual subscription through a demo. The ATS has no public price either: plans Core, Plus and Pro are "customized based on your company's hiring needs."

Pick it if you hire across several teams or regions and need every interviewer working from the same scorecard. Compare it with Lever in our Greenhouse vs Lever page.

5. Ashby: best for teams that run hiring on reports

Ashby is "The all-in-one recruiting platform that evolves at the speed of AI", with ATS, CRM, scheduling and analytics in one product.

The pricing grid shows a price for companies of up to 100 employees; above that, pricing "is based on company size, usage, and commitment." For sourcing you get "AI Candidate Search", which "Generates candidate-search filters from a typed natural-language prompt", plus a Chrome extension, 200 email lookups and sequences over email and LinkedIn InMail. Interviews get a paid AI Notetaker; there's no AI interviewer on the grid. See Ashby competitors if you need one.

Pick it if you're a startup or mid-sized company that wants a report for every stage of hiring.

6. Gem: best for in-house teams that source a lot

Gem is "Trusted by 1,200+ talent acquisition teams". Its AI Sourcing Agent can "Search 800M+ profiles" and surface past candidates from your own records. You can layer Gem onto your current ATS or replace the ATS with Gem.

Interviewing in Gem means scheduling tools, such as a self-scheduling portal, and no AI interview. Pricing is "custom pricing Based on your company's FTE count" with "Talk to Sales", except a startup program for very small teams that shows a price on the pricing page.

Pick it if your recruiters keep re-finding the same people and you want sourcing, CRM and ATS on one dataset.

7. Lever: best ATS and CRM in one for mid-sized teams

Lever describes itself as "a modern applicant tracking system (ATS) and recruiting CRM". It sits under Employ alongside JazzHR and Jobvite, and we cover JazzHR alternatives and Jobvite competitors separately. Its pricing page lists "ATS & CRM in one", AI-powered screening, fraud signals and "Unlimited AI interview transcripts and summaries".

For high applicant volume there's an add-on, "AI Screening by VONQ", which screens candidates on your careers site. Lever lists no outside profile database. Pricing is a custom quote, "available upon request". Our Lever review covers the Employ ownership and plans, and Lever alternatives lists other ATS and CRM options.

Pick it if you want nurturing and tracking in one tool and are happy to buy through sales.

8. Teamtailor: best for a careers site that does the selling

Teamtailor is "Trusted by over 13,000 companies worldwide" and built around employer brand. Its careers site lets people sign up for alerts about new jobs, and it connects to "450+ powerful integrations". Every plan gives you "Unlimited job postings and unlimited users".

Its AI, Co-pilot, "searches your talent pool" for matches and screens applicants against your criteria. It doesn't search outside your database, and it can record the interviews your team runs but has no AI interviewer. The pricing page says "Let us give you a quote". For other options, see our Teamtailor alternatives.

Pick it if your brand pulls applicants and you want the careers site and the ATS to be one product.

9. BambooHR: best if hiring should live inside your HR system

BambooHR's ATS posts to job boards "like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn", lets candidates self-schedule, and sends offer letters with e-signatures. Its main pull is "Automatic data transfer to employee records", so a hire becomes an employee without retyping.

The trade-off is depth. There's no outside search and no AI interview, because BambooHR is an HR system first. The pricing page is clear: "Pay per employee, per month," with volume discounts and a flat rate for small companies, and hiring is part of the Core plan. Our BambooHR pricing guide explains the per-employee model.

Pick it if you hire a handful of people a year and already want BambooHR for payroll and time off.

10. Indeed Smart Sourcing: best job-board-native way to search people looking for work

Indeed Smart Sourcing "provides a resume database and AI-powered candidate sourcing software". It searches "more than 380M Sourceable Profiles", which Indeed defines as job-seeker accounts set to public. That makes it the closest thing on this list to a job board you can search.

It's a subscription with a published price, 100 contacts a month that roll over for 6 months, and a charge for each contact above that. The 14-day trial lets you invite up to 5 contacts. On ATS links, Indeed says options "may depend on your account setup". Our guide to what Indeed costs has the numbers, and our review of Indeed Smart Sourcing covers how well it works.

Pick it if your roles suit people who are actively job hunting and you want to message them before they apply.

Who is The Cognitive built for?

It's built for employers whose hardest roles are filled by people who aren't applying, like a senior Go engineer or an enterprise account executive. It suits teams that want those people interviewed before a hiring manager gives up an hour. Most keep their stack and add The Cognitive at the front of it:

How much do hiring platforms cost?

Of the 10 platforms here, 5 publish their plan prices, 2 publish part of them and 3 are quote only. They charge in 5 ways:

The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, billed monthly. Greenhouse, Lever and Teamtailor state no contract terms on their pricing pages, so ask about length and renewal before the demo ends.

Cheapest to start are the self-serve trials: Workable for 15 days, Manatal for 14 and Indeed Smart Sourcing for 14. The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits.

How do you test a hiring platform before you buy?

Pick the open role that has stalled longest. Put it through 2 platforms from the table that cover the stage where it's stuck. Then count 4 numbers after 2 weeks:

Sit through the candidate side yourself by booking an interview on your own job. Have a hiring manager review 5 shortlisted candidates without knowing which tool found them. The Cognitive lets you run that role through it on the free trial, so you'll have your own numbers before you pay. If you'd rather start with the product pages, see AI sourcing and the AI interviewer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hiring platform for employers in 2026?

The Cognitive is the best hiring platform for employers in 2026 when your hardest roles are filled by people who aren't applying. It searches ~900M public profiles and interviews the people you pick in a live, two-way AI video interview, self-serve, at a published price. If you need one system for jobs, applicants and offers, Workable is the strongest all-in-one choice, and Greenhouse leads for structured hiring at scale. Most employers pair The Cognitive with one of those.

What is the best hiring software for a growing company?

For a growing company, the best setup is Workable as the system of record plus The Cognitive for the roles that stall. Workable publishes its prices, has a 15-day trial and covers posting, tracking, offers and HR. The Cognitive adds sourcing across ~900M public profiles and a live AI first interview, and connects to Workable, Ashby, Greenhouse and 60+ other ATSs. Ashby is the pick if you want deep reporting from the start.

Which hiring platform finds and screens candidates?

The Cognitive both finds candidates outside your database and screens them in a live, two-way AI video interview scored against your rubric. Workable and Gem search outside your database but have no AI interview. Greenhouse runs a two-way AI interview by voice, sold through a demo. Manatal has an outside database with search limits on its lower plans and an asynchronous AI video interview add-on.

Should I buy an all-in-one hiring platform or separate tools?

Buy an all-in-one platform if your problem is process, and add a separate tool if one stage is leaking. Workable, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Manatal and Teamtailor bring jobs, applicants and offers into one system. If your ATS works but the right people never apply, add The Cognitive at the front: it sources and interviews candidates and writes a note back to your ATS for candidates imported from it.

How much do hiring platforms cost?

Hiring platforms charge by company size, per user, per employee, by subscription plus usage, or by custom quote. The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month. Workable, Manatal, BambooHR and Indeed Smart Sourcing publish their prices, Ashby and Gem publish part of theirs, and Greenhouse, Lever and Teamtailor are quote only.

What are the best hiring tools in 2026?

Pick by the stage that costs you the most hours.

Are job boards hiring platforms?

No, job boards are a channel, and hiring platforms are the software that runs the process. A job board brings applicants to you. A hiring platform posts to those boards, tracks applicants and moves them to an offer, or, in The Cognitive's case, finds people who haven't applied and interviews them. Indeed Smart Sourcing sits between the two: it lets you search Indeed's public job-seeker profiles.

Is there a free trial of a hiring platform I can start today?

Yes. The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits and no sales call. Workable offers 15 days without its AI agent, Manatal offers 14 days, and Indeed Smart Sourcing offers 14 days with up to 5 contacts. Greenhouse, Lever and Teamtailor start with a demo.
