Lever Applicant Tracking System Review: ATS, CRM and AI Under Employ

Lever is an applicant tracking system and recruiting CRM in one product, sold as LeverTRM and owned by Employ Inc., which also runs JazzHR and Jobvite. It adds AI screening, interview transcripts and fraud signals. Lever pricing is a custom quote with no figure on its site. It rates 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from 2,124 reviews.

I run The Cognitive. We integrate with Lever and don't sell an ATS, so we don't compete with it for your system of record, but weigh this review knowing who wrote it. Every Lever fact below was read on lever.co, employinc.com and G2 on 4 October 2026. I have not used Lever on a paid account.

What is Lever ATS?

Lever's own definition: "Lever is a modern applicant tracking system (ATS) and recruiting CRM that helps companies attract, nurture, and hire top talent faster." The product page calls the bundle LeverTRM and claims it is "the only platform that combines a powerful ATS with a complete CRM in a single solution". Greenhouse and Gem also sell a CRM with their ATS, so treat "the only" as Lever's claim. What Lever does stress is that there's nothing to connect: sourcing, nurturing and hiring sit in one platform "no integrations or toggling required".

Lever belongs to Employ Inc. Employ sells 3 ATSs and labels them by size: "JazzHR: Foundational Hiring", "Lever: Scalable Hiring" and "Jobvite: Sophisticated Hiring". Employ describes Lever as "a scalable talent relationship platform that grows with high-growth teams" and says it has over 600 staff. Lever's AI is governed at the Employ level, "built with watsonx.governance and backed by IBM".

  • ATS. Job posting to 200+ boards in one click, structured scorecards, approval chains and offer letters.
  • CRM. Nurture campaigns to people who haven't applied yet, and rediscovery of past candidates already in Lever.
  • Candidate experience. Branded career sites and self-service interview scheduling, with SMS built in.
  • Analytics. Visual Insights dashboards, funnel conversion, time to fill, source of hire and DEI reporting.
  • Marketplace. A partner marketplace at marketplace.lever.co for HRIS, assessment, background check and sourcing tools.

How does Lever work, step by step?

This is the flow LeverTRM describes on its own product and screening pages. The CRM and the ATS share one database, so a prospect you nurture and a later applicant don't need copying between tools.

  • 1. Post. Publish the job to 200+ boards and your branded careers site.
  • 2. Nurture. Run CRM email campaigns to prospects and rediscover silver medalists from past roles.
  • 3. Screen. AI-powered screening shows each applicant's fit "with data-backed justification" and ranks a shortlist; the VONQ add-on can screen on the careers site before that.
  • 4. Schedule. Candidates book their own interview slots, and Lever sends follow-ups automatically.
  • 5. Interview. Your team runs the interviews. Lever records unlimited AI transcripts and summaries, and interviewers fill in structured scorecards.
  • 6. Decide and offer. Approval chains route the offer letter, and personalized rejection emails are drafted for the rest.
  • 7. Report. Visual Insights tracks conversion by stage, time to fill and source of hire.

Lever pricing: how much does Lever cost?

Lever does not publish a price. The pricing page is a form headed "Get Your Customized Quote", and its FAQ says pricing is "available upon request". The homepage lists what moves the number: company size, hiring volume, feature needs and implementation requirements. That is the whole answer to "lever ats pricing" from Lever itself; anyone quoting a figure is quoting a buyer, not Lever.

What a quote covers: Lever says "Every plan includes our core applicant tracking system, candidate relationship management, advanced reporting and analytics, and key integrations". The core platform also lists AI-powered screening, unlimited AI interview transcripts and summaries, and fraud prevention signals. Candidate Insights, AI Screening by VONQ and Onboarding are add-ons, each behind its own "Get My Price Quote" button.

G2's pricing insights, averaged from reviewers, put time to implement at 2 months, return on investment at 13 months and the average discount at 12%. Lever's comparison page says typical migrations take about 6 weeks. Two reviewers flag the add-on model as the cost to watch: one says the AI products she wants most "are more expensive and an upcharge", and a head of talent acquisition says advanced reporting comes "at an additional cost".

What AI features does Lever have?

Some of Lever's AI comes in the core plan, and more comes from Employ's AI Companions and the VONQ add-on. The core plan's AI helps your team screen and take interview notes; it doesn't conduct the interview.

  • AI-powered screening. Fit scoring with a written justification, drop-off alerts for candidates left waiting, and drafted rejection emails.
  • Fraud prevention signals. Flags on suspicious applications, such as identity or resume mismatches.
  • AI interview transcripts and summaries. Unlimited on the core plan, for interviews your team runs.
  • AI Interview Companion (formerly Pillar). An Employ assistant that works inside Lever. Employ says it "assists with transcription and summarization. It does not provide candidate scoring or hiring recommendations."
  • AI Sourcing Companion. An Employ product that tunes job postings, rediscovers people already in your ATS and says it handles "knock-out questions, initial interviews, and candidate scoring" on a pay-for-performance model. Employ does not say what format those interviews take, so ask.
  • AI Screening by VONQ. A paid Lever add-on for "agent-based screening embedded directly into your career site". VONQ's own site says its EQO Screen product chats with applicants by web chat, WhatsApp, SMS, email and voice, and can make outbound AI phone screens. Lever doesn't say which of those modules the add-on includes.

What do Lever reviews on G2 say?

Lever holds 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from 2,124 reviews, read on 4 October 2026. 1,320 are five-star and 39 are one-star. G2's tagged pros are led by Ease of Use (44 mentions), User Interface (25) and Integrations (21). The cons are led by Poor Customer Support and Candidate Management (14 each), then Limited Customization (11) and Integration Issues (9).

G2's summary says users praise the "user-friendly interface" and "streamlined hiring process", and that "customer support could be more responsive". The positive reviews read alike: recruiters like having email, notes, scheduling and candidates in one place, and hiring managers who log in rarely can follow it.

The critical reviews fall into 4 themes. Support: a senior recruiter wrote that "Support has diminished over time". Price for small teams: a head of talent acquisition said "Pricing can also be a constraint for smaller or earlier-stage teams". AI quality: a clinical recruiter said "The AI talent fit is not perfect yet". Pipeline design: a reviewer in IT services called the universal pipeline "extremely confusing to managers that do not use all the stages", and another said qualified LinkedIn applicants were sent rejection emails through the integration.

Where does Lever not fit?

These limits come from Lever's own pages and its G2 reviewers.

  • You can't see a price before a sales call. Every plan and every add-on is a quote.
  • It doesn't search outside your own database. Lever's sourcing is job boards, nurture campaigns and rediscovery of people already in Lever.
  • The core plan doesn't run first interviews. Lever's AI transcribes and summarizes interviews people run; the VONQ add-on screens applicants on the careers site.
  • Support is the most tagged complaint on G2, ahead of customization.
  • One pipeline is shared across roles, which some hiring managers find confusing when a job skips stages.
  • Small teams may find it expensive once the AI add-ons and advanced reporting are priced in.

Who is Lever for?

  • Growing companies that want an ATS and a recruiting CRM in one product instead of two contracts. Lever's own comparison page calls it the best fit for mid-market businesses.
  • Teams that nurture talent pools for months, because the CRM campaigns and the hiring pipeline share one database.
  • Recruiting teams with many casual users, since ease of use is the top G2 theme and Lever pitches itself as built for hiring managers too.
  • Buyers already talking to Employ, who can compare Lever with JazzHR and Jobvite under one vendor.

Lever vs Greenhouse: which ATS fits?

Pick Lever if your team nurtures prospects for months and wants the ATS and CRM in one record. Pick Greenhouse if structured hiring, interview kits and scorecards are the priority. Both sell by quote: Greenhouse shows 3 plans, Core, Plus and Pro, each with a "Get a demo" button and no price. Our Greenhouse pricing guide breaks down what each plan includes.

On G2, Greenhouse rates 4.4 out of 5 from 4,035 reviews against Lever's 4.3 from 2,124. Lever's own comparison page claims built-in SMS scheduling and stronger analytics, and calls Greenhouse "Made primarily for recruiters". Greenhouse has one thing Lever's core plan lacks: Voice AI, a two-way voice interview it sells as a separate annual product. The full side by side is in Greenhouse vs Lever, and Ashby is covered in Lever vs Ashby.

If you've decided to leave Lever, our Lever alternatives guide ranks 9 replacement ATSs by how much of a Lever workflow survives the move. For the full field, see applicant tracking system software, and for what a quote-priced ATS like Lever tends to cost, our guide to applicant tracking system pricing explains the per-employee and per-user models.

Does Lever integrate with The Cognitive?

Yes. Lever is one of The Cognitive's 60+ ATS integrations, connected from the dashboard. You pick the Lever stage to import active candidates from, invite them to a live AI interview, and the score, a summary and the report link go back to the candidate in Lever as a note.

Lever keeps every decision. The integration never moves a candidate's stage and never rejects anyone. The note goes only to candidates imported from Lever; people you source inside The Cognitive are not written into Lever automatically, so you add the ones worth pursuing yourself. The setup is on our Lever integration page.

Verdict: who should buy Lever, and who should not

  • Verdict: a well-liked, easy ATS and CRM in one record, now one of 3 Employ products, with AI that helps people screen and take notes rather than doing the screen itself.
  • Buy it if you're a growing company that nurtures prospects, values ease of use for hiring managers and is happy to buy through a sales quote.
  • Look elsewhere if you need a published price, search outside your own database, or AI-run first interviews without stacking add-ons.
  • Before you sign, ask for the AI add-ons and advanced reporting as separate line items, and ask what the VONQ add-on actually includes.

Disclosure: who published this

The Cognitive publishes this review. We don't sell an ATS, so a Lever team keeps Lever and adds us for sourcing and first interviews. We search ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief, and we run a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes in 9 languages. The rubric is fixed per role and the questions adapt to each answer.

Each interview comes back with a 1 to 5 score per criterion, a weighted score out of 100, the transcript and the recording. AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lever ATS?

Lever is an applicant tracking system and recruiting CRM in one product, sold as LeverTRM. It handles job posting, nurture campaigns, AI screening, scheduling, scorecards, offers and analytics, and it is owned by Employ Inc., which also runs JazzHR and Jobvite.

Is Lever an ATS or a CRM?

Lever is both. LeverTRM puts the ATS, the recruiting CRM and analytics in one platform, so you nurture prospects and run hiring pipelines in the same database with no integration between them.

How much does Lever cost?

Lever doesn't publish a price; every plan is a custom quote. Lever says cost depends on company size, hiring volume, feature needs and implementation requirements. Add-ons such as AI Screening by VONQ are quoted separately, and G2 reviewers report an average 12% discount.

What is included in Lever's pricing?

Every Lever plan includes the core ATS, the recruiting CRM, advanced reporting and analytics, and key integrations, according to Lever's pricing page. The core platform also lists AI-powered screening, unlimited AI interview transcripts and summaries, and fraud prevention signals. Candidate Insights, AI Screening by VONQ and Onboarding cost extra.

Does Lever have AI interviews?

No, Lever doesn't run AI interviews in its core plan. Its AI transcribes and summarizes interviews your team runs, and Employ's AI Interview Companion does not score candidates. The paid VONQ add-on screens applicants on your careers site. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview and connects to Lever.

What do Lever reviews say?

Lever reviews are mostly positive: 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from 2,124 reviews on 4 October 2026. Users praise ease of use, the interface and integrations; the common complaints are customer support, candidate management, limited customization and add-on costs.

Is Lever worth it in 2026?

Lever is worth it for a growing company that wants an ATS and CRM in one record and values ease of use. Check support and add-on pricing before you renew, since both lead the G2 complaints. If you need a published price or AI-run first interviews, compare the alternatives first.

Lever vs Greenhouse: which is better?

Lever suits teams that nurture prospects and want the ATS and CRM in one record; Greenhouse suits teams that prioritize structured hiring and scorecards. Both sell by quote. On G2, Greenhouse rates 4.4 from 4,035 reviews and Lever 4.3 from 2,124.

Does Lever integrate with The Cognitive?

Yes. Lever is one of The Cognitive's 60+ ATS integrations. You import candidates from a Lever stage you choose, and after the AI interview the score, summary and report link go back as a note. The integration never moves a stage or rejects anyone.
