Lever Alternatives in 2026: 10 ATS and Recruiting Platforms Compared
By Sparsh Goyal, Founder at The Cognitive. Published · Last updated
- Top picks: The Cognitive to fill whichever ATS you choose, Ashby as the closest full Lever replacement, Greenhouse for structured hiring, Workable for published prices, Gem for outside sourcing.
- The Cognitive is the only tool here that finds people outside your database and runs a live, two-way AI video interview with them, in a self-serve account at a published price; Lever sells by quote and is owned by Employ Inc.
- Pick Pinpoint for several hiring streams, SmartRecruiters if you run SAP, and Jobvite only if you're happy to stay with Lever's parent company.
- I run The Cognitive. The other 9 are judged from their own websites, read on 3 October 2026.
The best Lever alternative in 2026 depends on what's broken: The Cognitive is the sourcing and interview layer that fills whichever applicant tracking system (ATS) you choose, and Ashby is the closest full replacement for Lever itself. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief and runs a live, two-way AI video interview with the people you pick. Among the other Lever competitors, Greenhouse leads on structured hiring, Workable publishes its prices, and Gem adds outside sourcing to an ATS or replaces it.
Get the diagnosis right before you migrate. Greenhouse's March 2026 benchmark report counted roughly 115 applications per role in 2022 and 244 in 2025, while recruiters per organization fell 55.6%. Moving that pile from Lever into another ATS doesn't make it smaller.
The best Lever alternatives in 2026
- The Cognitive: best overall, for finding new candidates and interviewing them live with AI, next to any ATS.
- Ashby: best for scaling startups that want ATS, CRM and analytics in one product.
- Greenhouse: best for structured hiring with scorecards and a big partner network.
- Workable: best for small teams that want a published price and a free trial.
- Gem: best for outside sourcing and a CRM on top of your ATS, or a startup all-in-one.
- Teamtailor: best for employer branding and careers sites.
- Tellent Recruitee: best for growing teams that want to try an ATS before a demo.
- Pinpoint: best for running several hiring streams side by side.
- SmartRecruiters: best for corporate hiring on SAP SuccessFactors.
- Jobvite: best for regulated, high-volume hiring, if you're happy to stay with Lever's parent company.
Full disclosure: I run The Cognitive, and it isn't an ATS. I put it first on a test you can rerun: it's the only tool here that finds people outside your database and runs a live, two-way AI video interview with them, in an account you can open without a sales call, at a published price. Numbers 2 to 10 are ATSs, ranked by my judgment of how well each replaces Lever for a growing company that wants an ATS and a CRM together. I have not used the other 9 on a paid account. What I say about them comes from their own websites, read on 3 October 2026.
What is Lever ATS, and who owns it now?
Lever describes itself as "a modern applicant tracking system (ATS) and recruiting CRM", built for "growing and enterprise teams". Its pricing page lists the core platform as "ATS & CRM in one" with reporting, AI-powered screening, fraud signals and "Unlimited AI interview transcripts and summaries". Our Lever review covers the product in full, and our list of applicant tracking system software shows where it sits.
Lever belongs to Employ Inc. The lever.co footer reads "© 2026 Employ Inc.", and lever.co/about redirects to Employ's company page. Employ runs 3 ATSs, JazzHR, Lever and Jobvite, and its homepage pitches Lever as "a scalable talent relationship platform that grows with high-growth teams". Ashby's comparison page dates the acquisition to 2022.
Is Lever still worth it after the Employ acquisition?
Yes, if the ATS plus CRM model suits you and your hiring managers like the interface. Lever's AI is now governed at the Employ level; its pricing FAQ says every AI feature is "built with watsonx.governance and backed by IBM". The open question is service, the top complaint tag on G2. If you keep Lever, our Lever integration connects The Cognitive to the account you already run.
What do Lever ATS reviews say?
Lever reviews are mostly warm. G2 lists "Lever By Employ" at 4.3 out of 5 from 2,124 reviews (read 3 October 2026). "Ease of Use" is the top praise tag, 44 times, followed by "User Interface" at 25. The complaints are specific:
- Support. "Poor Customer Support" is tagged 14 times. A senior recruiter wrote in April 2026 that "Support has diminished over time".
- AI as an upcharge. The same reviewer said the AI products she was most excited about "are more expensive and an upcharge".
- One pipeline for every job. An IT services reviewer called the universal pipeline "extremely confusing to managers that do not use all the stages". Ashby makes the same point in its own pitch against Lever.
"Limited Customization" appears 11 times, and G2's reviewer averages put time to implement at 2 months. If support is your main complaint, ask each finalist for 2 customer references your size.
What is Lever's AI Screening by VONQ?
It's a paid add-on, sold by quote. Lever describes it as "AI-powered, agent-based screening embedded directly into your career site", built for "high application volume".
VONQ is a separate recruitment marketing company. Its EQO Screen talks to applicants "across web chat, WhatsApp, SMS, email, and voice" and can run outbound AI phone screens. A separate EQO Interview module runs "Dynamic AI interviews" with follow-ups. Lever doesn't say which modules its add-on includes, so ask the rep. Either way, it works on people who already applied, and Lever's pricing page lists no tool for reaching people who haven't.
How do the Lever alternatives compare?
Here is how they stack up. I filled in every cell from the vendor's own site on 3 October 2026:
| Tool | Best for | Finds people outside your database? | AI interview? | Pricing model (published?) | Connects to The Cognitive? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Cognitive | Sourcing, then interviewing, next to your ATS | Yes, ~900M public profiles | Live two-way video, 9 languages | Monthly plans with credits (yes) | It's the layer |
| Ashby | Scaling startups, all-in-one | No; AI search runs over your Ashby data | No; AI notetaker | By company size (Foundations plan only) | Yes |
| Greenhouse | Structured hiring | No outside database listed | Two-way voice AI, by demo | Custom, by plan (no) | Yes |
| Workable | Small teams, published price | Yes, 400M+ profiles via its agent | One-way video add-on | By employee band (yes) | Yes |
| Gem | Sourcing and CRM on any ATS | Yes, 800M+ profiles | None listed | Custom, by FTE count (no) | Yes |
| Teamtailor | Employer brand, careers sites | No; sourcing extension | No; video meetings with summaries | Quote (no) | Yes |
| Tellent Recruitee | Trying an ATS before a demo | No; AI matching over your ATS database | None listed | Plans by demo, free trial (no) | Yes |
| Pinpoint | Multi-stream hiring | No; sourcing extension | One-way video | Request pricing (no) | Yes |
| SmartRecruiters | Corporate hiring on SAP | None listed | AI screening and chat, upper plans | Starting price on Essential only | Yes |
| Jobvite | Regulated, complex hiring | None listed | No; AI assistant for human interviewers | Modular quote (no) | Yes |
Lever's own row: no outside profile database listed, career-site screening through the VONQ add-on, and a custom quote with no figure on the site.
How did we rank these Lever alternatives?
I picked the 9 vendors a Lever buyer actually meets: the ones Lever's footer compares itself with, the ones G2 shows beside Lever, and the ATSs that pitch Lever customers directly. All 9 connect to The Cognitive.
The Cognitive is first on 4 tests anyone can check: it finds people outside your database; it runs a live, two-way AI video interview with them; you can open an account without a sales call; the price is on the website. Workable passes 3, but its video interview is one-way, per its help centre. Greenhouse's interview is two-way, but by voice and through a demo. Gem searches 800M+ profiles but lists no AI interview and sells by quote.
For the 9 ATSs, I judged how much of a Lever workflow, ATS and CRM together, survives the move. Ashby and Greenhouse keep the most. Jobvite sits last because Employ owns it too. I couldn't test anything behind a paid login.
How do you choose a Lever alternative?
Do you need a new ATS, or more candidates in Lever?
Look at where last year's hires came from. Gem's 2026 recruiting benchmarks found that job boards and company channels bring roughly 90% of applications but only about half of hires. If your best hires came from people you went after, a new ATS won't change much. Keep Lever and add a sourcing layer. If the workflow itself is the problem, switch.
What's the best Lever alternative for a scaling startup?
Ashby, for most. It shows a price up to 100 employees and says over 100 organizations switched to it from Lever in the last year. Gem gives companies under 30 employees its All-in-One plan "free for six months, then 50% off". Our guide to ATS options for small businesses goes further.
Do you want AI sourcing in the same tool?
Only 2 ATS options here list an outside profile database: Workable's agent searches 400M+ profiles and Gem's AI Sourcing Agent searches 800M+. Ashby's AI search and Recruitee's matching assistant work on people already in your system. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles and connects to every ATS on this list, so your sourcing choice doesn't lock in your ATS choice.
Who will run the first interview?
Greenhouse's benchmark shows annual applications per recruiter up 411.8% since 2022. Most ATSs record your interviews but don't hold the first conversation. Decide who runs round 1 first, because it changes which add-ons you pay for.
Lever vs Greenhouse vs Ashby: which should you pick?
Greenhouse vs Lever
Lever sells ATS and CRM in one product; Greenhouse sells structured hiring. Lever's own comparison page claims built-in SMS and stronger analytics; on G2, Greenhouse scores 4.4 from 4,035 reviews to Lever's 4.3 from 2,124. Both sell by quote. Our full verdict is in Greenhouse vs Lever.
Lever vs Ashby
Ashby pitches Lever customers directly. It says Lever teams are "beholden to a single pipeline across every role" and offers contract buyouts to companies that qualify. Lever's answer is AI and governance across the funnel. If you're a startup, Ashby wins on price visibility. See Lever vs Ashby for the detail.
Lever vs Workday and SmartRecruiters
These fit when HR already runs on SAP or Workday. We compare both in Lever vs Workday and Lever vs SmartRecruiters.
The 10 best Lever alternatives, reviewed
1. The Cognitive: best overall, for finding new candidates and interviewing them live with AI
The Cognitive is AI recruiting software that sources candidates across ~900M public profiles and interviews them live with AI. It sits next to Lever, or whichever ATS replaces it.
You type the role in plain English and it turns the brief into filters you can edit. I tested "Senior backend engineer with 5+ years of Go who has built payments systems, Remote EU", and it read "Remote EU" as Germany plus 7 other countries. Anyone who misses a must-have drops below the people who meet them, and each result card opens with a "Why this match" line traced to the profile, like "Go listed in skills".
Search costs 1 credit per candidate a search returns. A verified email costs 5 and a phone number 10, charged only when a value comes back. Sourcing Pro adds email and SMS sequences from platform mailboxes. The people you pick then get a live AI interview, covered below.
It has 60+ ATS integrations, including Lever and all 9 ATSs here. For candidates imported from your ATS, it writes back a note with the interview score, summary and report link; people sourced inside The Cognitive aren't pushed into the ATS automatically. It isn't an ATS, so there's no job posting, careers page or offers, and no search of your ATS history.
Pick it if you're thinking about leaving Lever because the pipeline is thin, or you want round 1 done before your team spends an hour. More on the AI sourcing tool page.
Fill Lever with people worth interviewing Describe the role in plain English, judge every match against your must-haves, and interview the people you pick, live, with AI. Start free
2. Ashby: best for scaling startups that want ATS, CRM and analytics in one product
Ashby puts ATS, CRM, sourcing, scheduling and analytics in one product and claims "4,000+ businesses" as customers. Its sequences run "across email and LinkedIn InMail", it includes 200 email lookups, and its AI notetaker "records, transcribes, and summarizes your interviews". Ashby says teams can "fully customize multiple pipelines depending on the role, department or geography", which answers the most specific Lever complaint on G2.
The limit: only Foundations, up to 100 employees, shows a price. Above that, pricing "is based on company size, usage, and commitment". More options are in our Ashby alternatives guide.
Pick it if you're a growing startup and want to leave Lever for one system that does more out of the box.
3. Greenhouse: best for structured hiring with scorecards and a big partner network
Greenhouse says it is used by more than 7,500 companies. Every plan includes structured interview kits and scorecards. Since buying Ezra AI Labs in May 2026 it also sells Voice AI, a "two-way conversation" in 11 languages, available on its own to companies on other ATSs, Lever included.
The limit: Core, Plus and Pro all sit behind "Get a demo", with no price on the site. Our Greenhouse pricing guide explains how the tiers differ.
Pick it if you want every interviewer working from the same scorecard. If you're comparing it with others too, read our Greenhouse alternatives guide.
4. Workable: best for small teams that want a published price and a free trial
Workable says "35,000+ teams" use it. It publishes prices by employee band and offers a 15-day free trial with no credit card. Its agent "Searches 400M+ profiles" and runs on AI credits, so it's one of 2 ATSs here with an outside database.
The limit: on Standard, texting and video interviews are add-ons, and the video interview is one-way.
Pick it if you hire a handful of people a year and want to see the price before you talk to anyone. Compare it further in Workable alternatives.
5. Gem: best for outside sourcing and a CRM on top of your ATS, or a startup all-in-one
Gem says "1,200+ talent acquisition teams" use it. Its AI Sourcing Agent searches 800M+ profiles, and Gem "integrates natively with Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, iCIMS". Gem ATS is "best for growing teams with up to a few thousand employees", so you can add Gem to Lever or replace Lever with it.
The limit: pricing is custom "Based on your company's FTE count", and Gem lists no AI interview. Above 100 employees, you'll need a sales call to see a number. Our Gem review has the detail.
Pick it if sourcing is your main gap and you want it inside your recruiting system. Compare it fairly in our Gem alternatives guide.
6. Teamtailor: best for employer branding and careers sites
Teamtailor calls itself a "candidate-first ATS", says it serves more than 13,000 companies, and lists "450+ powerful integrations". Its features page includes a built-in video meeting tool with meeting summaries, candidate screening against your criteria, and a sourcing extension.
The limit: pricing is "Let us give you a quote", and the sourcing extension is manual, with no profile database behind it. See Teamtailor alternatives for its closest rivals.
Pick it if your careers site does most of your attracting and you want it to look the part.
7. Tellent Recruitee: best for growing teams that want to try an ATS before a demo
Tellent Recruitee says "7,000+ companies" use it. Its 3 plans include CareersHub careers sites, and there's a "Start free trial" link for anyone not ready for a demo. Its AI Matching Assistant aims to "turn your ATS database into an active talent pool".
The limit: no plan price appears on the page, and the matching assistant works on your own database, not outside profiles.
Pick it if you want hands-on time with an ATS before a sales call, plus a careers site in the same tool.
8. Pinpoint: best for running several hiring streams side by side
Pinpoint bills itself as "The ATS built for multi-stream hiring", giving each stream its own workflows, branding, permissions and reporting. It includes one-way video interviews, an AI notetaker, a sourcing extension and an AI Candidate Companion that answers candidates' questions on your careers site.
The limit: you must "Request pricing" through a call, and the video interview is one-way.
Pick it if Lever's single pipeline doesn't fit, say graduate, hourly and executive hiring at the same time.
9. SmartRecruiters: best for corporate hiring on SAP SuccessFactors
SmartRecruiters says it has over 4,000 customers and is now available on SAP SuccessFactors. Its Winston AI layer covers matching and candidate chat, and its pricing page puts AI-powered candidate screening and conversational AI chat on the higher plans.
The limit: only the Essential plan shows a starting price, and the site says it is "not supporting agency organizations".
Pick it if your HR stack is SAP and you hire at corporate scale.
10. Jobvite: best for regulated, high-volume hiring, if you're happy to stay with Lever's parent company
Jobvite says it's designed for "sophisticated talent acquisition teams in highly regulated industries". You start with the core ATS and add modules such as onboarding and the AI Interview Companion, which guides human interviewers and, per Employ, "does not provide candidate scoring or hiring recommendations". G2 gives Jobvite 4 out of 5 from 674 reviews.
The limit: Employ Inc. owns Jobvite too, so you keep the same vendor. Every price is a quote. Our Jobvite alternatives guide covers the rest of the field.
Pick it if you need compliance tooling and are happy with Employ as a vendor.
Which Lever alternatives include AI interviews?
Greenhouse has the closest thing among the ATSs: Voice AI, a two-way voice interview in 11 languages, sold through a demo. Workable and Pinpoint offer one-way video, where candidates record answers to set prompts. SmartRecruiters uses AI screening and chat. Jobvite's and Lever's interview AI assists the humans running the interview, and Lever's VONQ add-on screens applicants on your careers site, as covered above. Ashby, Teamtailor, Recruitee and Gem list no AI interviewer.
The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview with the people you sourced or imported: 10 or 20 minutes, in any of 9 languages. Candidates book their own slot without an account, and the invitation tells them the interview is run by AI. The rubric is fixed for the role while the questions adapt to each answer. You get a 1 to 5 score per criterion, overall written feedback, a weighted score out of 100, a suggested verdict, the transcript and the recording. Nothing is rejected automatically.
The recording above is a 5-minute live AI interview for a go-to-market role. The AI asks the candidate about an outbound email campaign, then follows up on reply rates and how leads were qualified. More on the AI interviewer page.
How much does Lever cost?
Lever doesn't publish a price. Its pricing page asks you to "Get Your Customized Quote", and its FAQ says Lever ATS pricing depends on "company size, hiring volume, feature needs, and implementation requirements". Add-ons such as AI Screening by VONQ are quoted separately, so Lever's cost grows with what you add. For how quoted and published ATS prices compare, see our guide to ATS pricing.
G2 reviewers report an average 12% discount, so the quote has room to move. Before you renew, get the term, notice period and data export process in writing.
The alternatives use 5 pricing models:
- Published, by company size or band: Workable, and Ashby up to 100 employees.
- Starting price, then quote: SmartRecruiters.
- Demo with a free trial: Tellent Recruitee.
- Quote or demo only: Greenhouse, Teamtailor, Pinpoint, Jobvite, and Gem by FTE count.
- Monthly plans with credits: The Cognitive.
The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, on monthly plans you can cancel anytime. Budget for it on top of your ATS. Details are on our pricing page.
How hard is it to switch off Lever?
Expect weeks of work. You'll move candidate, job and CRM data, rebuild pipeline stages and feedback forms, and reconnect integrations. Nurture campaigns and talent pools from Lever's CRM side need a new home too.
Run 1 open role in the new system for 2 weeks before you give notice. Time the move to your Lever renewal, and ask Ashby about its contract buyout. If the real problem is too few good candidates, connect The Cognitive to Lever and run one hard role first.
The Cognitive has a free trial with 100 sourcing credits.
Who is The Cognitive built for?
We built The Cognitive for recruiters whose hardest roles need people who aren't applying. You see who matches across ~900M public profiles, then read an interview report before you spend an hour on anyone. A read-only link carries the scores, written feedback and recording to a hiring manager or client.
- Keep Lever, or move to Ashby, Greenhouse or Workable. The interview score, summary and report link land on candidates you imported from any of them.
- Pair it with Lever's CRM. Let The Cognitive find and interview new people, and keep nurturing your past applicants in Lever.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to Lever?
The best Lever alternative depends on what you need to fix: The Cognitive if you need more good candidates, Ashby if you need a new ATS. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles and runs a live, two-way AI video interview with the people you pick, next to Lever or any ATS you move to. Ashby is the closest full replacement, with ATS, CRM, scheduling and analytics in one product, and Greenhouse and Workable are the next strongest options.
What is the best Lever alternative for a scaling startup?
Ashby is the best Lever alternative for most scaling startups, because it shows a price for its Foundations plan up to 100 employees and includes sourcing and analytics. Gem offers companies under 30 employees its All-in-One plan free for six months, then 50% off, and Workable has a 15-day trial with no credit card. If the startup mainly needs candidates, The Cognitive's AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month, on monthly plans.
How much does Lever cost?
Lever doesn't publish a price: every plan is a custom quote. Its pricing page says cost depends on company size, hiring volume, feature needs and implementation requirements, and add-ons such as AI Screening by VONQ are quoted separately. G2 reviewers report an average 12% discount. The Cognitive, which works next to Lever, publishes its prices: AI Sourcing starts at $49/month and AI Interview at $99/month.
Lever vs Greenhouse vs Ashby: which should I pick?
Pick Ashby for one all-in-one system with a visible price for smaller companies, Greenhouse for structured hiring with scorecards, and Lever if you want ATS and CRM in one and like its interface. Ashby is the only one of the 3 that shows a price, for companies up to 100 employees; Greenhouse and Lever sell by quote. None of them searches outside profiles for you, which is the gap The Cognitive fills for all 3.
Is Lever worth it after the Employ acquisition?
Lever is still worth it if its ATS plus CRM model suits you, but check support before you renew. Lever is owned by Employ Inc., which also runs JazzHR and Jobvite and positions Lever as its scalable option for high-growth teams. On G2, Lever holds 4.3 out of 5 from 2,124 reviews, and Poor Customer Support is its most tagged complaint. If you keep Lever, The Cognitive connects to it and fills it with sourced, interviewed candidates.
What is Lever's AI Screening by VONQ?
AI Screening by VONQ is a paid Lever add-on that runs agent-based screening on your careers site, sold by quote. VONQ's own site says its EQO Screen product talks to applicants by web chat, WhatsApp, SMS, email and voice, and it sells a separate EQO Interview module. Lever doesn't say which modules its add-on includes, so ask. It screens applicants only; The Cognitive finds people who haven't applied and interviews them live by video.
Is there a Lever alternative with AI sourcing?
Yes. The Cognitive searches ~900M public profiles from a plain-English brief and connects to Lever and every ATS on this list. Among ATSs, Workable's agent searches 400M+ profiles and Gem's AI Sourcing Agent searches 800M+. Ashby's AI search and Tellent Recruitee's matching assistant work on people already in your system.
Is there a Lever alternative with AI interviews?
Yes. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, in 9 languages, and gives you a 1 to 5 score per criterion, a weighted score out of 100, the transcript and the recording. Greenhouse sells Voice AI, a two-way voice interview, through a demo. Workable and Pinpoint offer one-way video, and Jobvite's AI Interview Companion assists human interviewers.
How hard is it to switch off Lever?
Switching off Lever takes weeks, because you move ATS and CRM data, rebuild pipeline stages and feedback forms, and reconnect integrations. Ashby offers contract buyouts to companies that qualify. Run 1 role in parallel for 2 weeks before you give notice, and if the real problem is a thin pipeline, test The Cognitive next to Lever first.
