Best BambooHR Alternatives in 2026: 10 Options for the Hiring Side and the HR Side
By Sparsh Goyal, Founder at The Cognitive. Published · Last updated
- The best BambooHR alternative depends on the side you have outgrown: The Cognitive, Greenhouse and Workable for hiring, and Rippling, Paylocity and Deel for HR and payroll.
- BambooHR caps open jobs at 5, 25 or 50 by plan and sells payroll and benefits as US-only add-ons, the two limits growing teams hit first.
- The Cognitive is not an HRIS: it finds people who never applied, emails them from your own mailbox, interviews them live with AI and brings BambooHR applicants in.
The best BambooHR alternative depends on which side you have outgrown: hiring or HR. For hiring, The Cognitive ranks first. It finds people who never applied, emails them from your own mailbox, interviews them live with AI and brings your BambooHR applicants in. Greenhouse suits structured hiring at larger companies, and Workable puts an ATS, a sourcing agent and HR in one account. For HR and payroll, Rippling runs HR, payroll and IT on one system, Paylocity pairs payroll with a recruiting suite, and Deel pays people in other countries.
The split matters because BambooHR's applicant tracking is built around people who apply. Job boards and company marketing channels produce roughly 90% of applications but only about half of hires, according to Gem's 2026 Recruiting Benchmarks Report (December 2025).
Disclosure: The Cognitive is our product.
The best BambooHR alternatives in 2026
For the hiring side:
- The Cognitive: best for sourcing-led hiring next to BambooHR or any ATS.
- Greenhouse: best for structured hiring with a two-way voice AI interviewer.
- Workable: best for an ATS, an AI sourcing agent and HR in one account.
- Ashby: best for scaling teams that want ATS, CRM and analytics together.
- JazzHR: best for small businesses replacing only the ATS.
For the HR side:
- Rippling: best for one system for HR, payroll, IT and finance, worldwide.
- Paylocity: best for mid-size companies that want payroll and a recruiting suite.
- Deel: best for paying people in other countries through EOR and contractors.
- HiBob: best for multi-country teams that care about the employee experience.
- Gusto: best for small US businesses that want payroll first.
Why do teams look for a BambooHR alternative?

BambooHR calls itself "The Complete HR Software for People, Payroll & Benefits" and says 30,000 businesses use it. Every plan includes an applicant tracking system with job posting to "Indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn, and more", automated candidate emails, offer letters, self-scheduling and "Searchable talent pools". For a company that hires a few people a year, that is plenty.
Two limits show up as a company grows. The plan table caps open jobs at 5 on Core, 25 on Pro and 50 on Elite. Payroll and Benefits Administration are add-ons marked "US employees only". Plans are priced per employee, per month; the breakdown is in BambooHR pricing.
Hiring is hard, which makes those limits bite. In SHRM's 2025 Talent Trends survey (March 2025), 69% of HR professionals surveyed reported difficulty recruiting for full-time roles over the previous 12 months. JazzHR, which sells a competing ATS, says some teams leave because "the bundled hiring module just isn't cutting it once you're actually posting jobs and screening applicants".
Have you outgrown the hiring side or the HR side?
If payroll, time off and records work but hiring is the pain, keep BambooHR and change the hiring tool. A new HRIS will not fix a recruiting problem.
Are you near the open-job cap?
Count the jobs you keep open at once, evergreen roles included. Gem's 2026 report found recruiters managing 13.4 open roles at a time, more than twice Core's limit of 5. Near the cap, a separate ATS or a sourcing tool that does not count openings takes the pressure off.
Do your best hires come from applicants?
Check where your last ten hires came from. In the same Gem report, direct sourcing produced 11% of hires from just 2.6% of applications. If hard roles never get the right applicants, you need a tool that goes out and finds people.
Do you pay people outside the US?
BambooHR's payroll and benefits add-ons cover US employees only. Rippling, Paylocity and Deel sell payroll for other countries in their own products.

How the ranking works
The score counts how much of the hiring chain a tool covers beyond BambooHR's ATS. Four points are possible:
- Find (1): 1 for searching people outside your applicants in its own profile database; 0.5 for a browser extension, email lookups or its own job-seeker network.
- Outreach (1): 1 for automated outreach to people who never applied (email sequences or agent-sent messages); 0.5 for a stated feature to re-engage an existing talent pool; 0 for messages to applicants only, including AI-drafted ones.
- Interview (1): 1 for an AI that runs a live two-way screening interview, by voice or video. One-way video, chat and notetakers score 0.
- Tracking (1): 1 for applicant tracking or a connection to an ATS; 0.5 for an ATS the site lists but does not describe.
The list is grouped by need. A tool is an HR suite if it runs payroll in its own product; the rest are hiring-side tools, listed first. Inside each group, the higher score ranks first. Ties go first to global payroll, meaning the vendor's own site sells payroll for employees in more than one country outside the US. The next tie-break is any price on the website.
So JazzHR, on 1, sits above Rippling, on 1.5, because it is in the hiring group. Rippling beats Paylocity on a price on the website, and Deel beats HiBob on global payroll. These tools are ranked using feedback from recruiters the founder talks with on LinkedIn, plus each vendor's own site and pricing page. ADP Workforce Now, Paycor, Justworks, UKG Pro and TriNet were left out as close to the HR suites listed. Lever, Gem and Teamtailor are in the best applicant tracking systems guide.
Hiring-side alternatives: keep or replace BambooHR's ATS
The five hiring-side alternatives fix the recruiting half, beside BambooHR or in place of its ATS.
1. The Cognitive: best for sourcing-led hiring next to BambooHR or any ATS

Verdict: scores 4 of 4: it searches beyond your applicants, emails people, interviews them by live video and connects to BambooHR.
The Cognitive adds AI sourcing and live AI interviews beside BambooHR, aimed at the people who will never apply. You describe the role in plain English and adjust the filters it builds. It then searches about 900M public profiles and gives each match a short reason. A personal email costs 4 credits to reveal; a phone number costs 12 and comes with Sourcing Pro and above.
Outreach goes from your own Gmail or Outlook mailbox, and follow-ups stop when someone replies. People who reply can take a live two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, in 9 languages. Each role has a fixed rubric, the questions follow each answer, and you get a scored report with the recording and transcript. It connects to 100+ ATS, BambooHR included, and brings your applicants and their resumes in next to the people you sourced.
Best for: teams on BambooHR whose hard roles go to people who are employed and not applying.
Watch out for: it is not an HRIS or an ATS: no payroll, records, job posts or offers. Outreach starts on Sourcing Pro, and the BambooHR connection needs Sourcing Max, Interview Pro or a plan above them.
Pricing model: AI Sourcing and AI Interviews are separate monthly plans, each from $99 a month (see pricing). Credits: 1 per person a search shows, once; 4 per personal email; 12 per phone number; 100 for a 20-minute interview.
2. Greenhouse: best for structured hiring with a two-way voice AI interviewer

Verdict: 3.5 of 4, the strongest full replacement for BambooHR's ATS.
Greenhouse sells "Sourcing, interviewing and ATS solutions in one place". Core includes sourcing and CRM, and Plus adds email automation and sourcing automation. For new people it points to job seekers "already in MyGreenhouse", its own network, rather than an open profile search.
Its Voice AI "runs a two-way voice interview on the candidate's schedule, with dynamic follow-up questions". The head-to-head is in Greenhouse vs BambooHR.
Best for: mid-size and large companies that want structured interviews and scorecards across many hiring teams.
Watch out for: every plan starts with a demo, and HR records and payroll stay in BambooHR or another HRIS.
Pricing model: Core, Plus and Pro plans by quote; no price on the website. More in Greenhouse pricing.
3. Workable: best for an ATS, an AI sourcing agent and HR in one account

Verdict: 3 of 4, the closest like-for-like swap, with stronger sourcing.
Workable describes itself as "agentic software for recruiting and HR. An AI agent sources, screens and engages candidates inside the Workable ATS." Its sourcing agent searches 400M+ profiles and sends each person a personalised message. On the HR side its pricing page lists employee records, onboarding, time off and payroll preparation.
Screening runs as a message exchange. Its video interviews are one-way, included on Premier and Enterprise and an add-on on Standard, which is the gap behind its score. See Workable alternatives.
Best for: small and mid-size companies that want an ATS, sourcing and basic HR under one login.
Watch out for: the agents run on AI credits, so heavy sourcing adds cost, and payroll preparation is not running payroll.
Pricing model: by employee band, monthly or annual, with prices on the website; paid add-ons; free trial.
4. Ashby: best for scaling teams that want ATS, CRM and analytics together

Verdict: 2.5 of 4, a strong ATS for teams that hire every month and live in reports.
Ashby sells "All-in-one recruiting software with AI embedded in every layer": ATS, CRM and sourcing, scheduling and analytics, with automated multi-touch sequences. For finding people it offers a Chrome extension, 200 included email lookups and AI search across candidates already in Ashby.
Its AI page describes an assistant, feedback summaries, scheduling and notetaking. Ashby has announced an AI Interviewer, but its site does not yet describe what it does, so it scores 0 here. See Ashby vs BambooHR or Ashby alternatives.
Best for: startups and scale-ups with a dedicated recruiting team.
Watch out for: it is recruiting only, so HR stays in BambooHR.
Pricing model: by company size; Foundations, for up to 100 employees, shows a price; Plus and Enterprise by contact.
5. JazzHR: best for small businesses replacing only the ATS

Verdict: 1 of 4, but the simplest dedicated ATS to run beside BambooHR.
JazzHR calls itself "The Best ATS for Small Businesses", covering job posting through offer letters. Its FAQ lists an integration with BambooHR, so BambooHR can stay as the HR system. It scores the same as BambooHR's own ATS here; the reason to switch is a fuller tracking product, not new reach. More in JazzHR alternatives.
Best for: small businesses that keep BambooHR for HR and want more room in the ATS.
Watch out for: no outbound search or AI interview, and standard pricing does not apply above 250 employees.
Pricing model: Hero, Plus and Pro, monthly or yearly, with prices on the website and savings for yearly billing.
HR-side alternatives: replace BambooHR as the HR system
The five HR-side alternatives replace BambooHR's core: records, payroll and benefits. Hiring is a module inside each. Broader lists are in best HR software by use case and best AI tools for HR.
6. Rippling: best for one system for HR, payroll, IT and finance, worldwide

Verdict: 1.5 of 4 on hiring, and the broadest replacement for BambooHR as a system.
Rippling promises to "Manage your entire workforce on one system", with "global HR, Payroll, IT, and Finance in one place", including payroll for employees and contractors abroad. Its recruiting module can "Rediscover and re-engage candidates from your talent pool", and its Interview Assistant records interviews your team runs.
Best for: companies that want HR, payroll, IT and finance on one system across countries.
Watch out for: recruiting requires Rippling's base HRIS. Costs are in Rippling pricing.
Pricing model: per employee per month plus a monthly base fee; the website shows a starting price, and the rest is by custom quote.
7. Paylocity: best for mid-size companies that want payroll and a recruiting suite

Verdict: 1.5 of 4, with the most complete recruiting module of the HR suites here.
Paylocity sells HR and payroll with "one connected, AI-powered recruiting platform". It posts to 20,000+ job boards in one click, and its AI "rediscovers qualified candidates, automates outreach, and activates existing talent pools". Screening uses one-way video interviews. Its site also sells global payroll.
Best for: mid-size companies that want payroll and recruiting from one vendor.
Watch out for: outreach works on talent pools you already have, and screening is one-way video.
Pricing model: by quote; no price on the website.
8. Deel: best for paying people in other countries through EOR and contractors

Verdict: 1 of 4 on hiring, and still the right call when the hard part is employing people abroad.
Deel promises to "Hire, manage, pay, & equip anyone, anywhere" and says 40,000+ companies use it. It covers global payroll, employer of record and PEO. Its "Find talent" service adds job posting, a candidate pipeline and AI screening of applicants.
Best for: companies hiring employees or contractors in countries where they have no entity.
Watch out for: its hiring tools work on applicants, so finding and interviewing people who never applied needs another tool.
Pricing model: per worker per month by service (hiring, contractor, EOR, PEO), with prices on the website.
9. HiBob: best for multi-country teams that care about the employee experience

Verdict: 1 of 4 on hiring, and a natural step up for a company spread across countries.
HiBob calls itself "The people platform for the modern world of work" and says 5,500+ companies use it. It runs payroll in the US and UK, and its Payroll Hub connects to payroll providers in other countries. Hiring runs through "an all-in-one AI-powered ATS" with a branded career page, built-in employee referrals and AI that drafts outreach and follow-ups.
Best for: mid-size companies with staff in several countries that already use local payroll providers.
Watch out for: drafting help is not automated outreach to new people, and pricing starts with a demo.
Pricing model: by quote; no price on the website.
10. Gusto: best for small US businesses that want payroll first

Verdict: 0.5 of 4 on hiring, and a simpler, payroll-led option for a small team.
Gusto "handles payroll, HR, and more in a snap", with custom offer letters, onboarding checklists and digital signatures under "Recruit. Hire. Onboard." Its menu lists an applicant tracking system; how deep it goes is not described on its site. It pays contractors in more than 120 countries.
Best for: US small businesses that mainly need payroll and benefits.
Watch out for: ask for a walkthrough of the applicant tracking before you rely on it for hiring.
Pricing model: Simple, Plus and Premium, a monthly base plus a per-person fee, with prices on the website; no contracts.
Which alternative does hiring end to end?
The Cognitive scores 4 of 4 here. It searches about 900M public profiles, emails people from your own mailbox, runs a live AI video interview and connects to your ATS. Greenhouse comes closest, with a two-way voice interviewer but no open profile search. Workable searches and messages but screens by chat. The HR suites track applicants and leave finding new people and live interviews to you.
For records, payroll and hiring from one vendor, Rippling and Paylocity come closest, without a live AI interview. See best AI sourcing tools and recruiting outreach software for the sourcing half.
When not to pick The Cognitive
- Your problem is HR, not hiring. If payroll, time off or global employment is breaking, pick Rippling, Paylocity, Deel, HiBob or Gusto.
- You need an ATS. It posts no jobs, takes no applications and sends no offers. Greenhouse, Workable, Ashby or JazzHR replace BambooHR's ATS.
- You want interview results inside BambooHR. The BambooHR connection brings applicants and resumes in; reports stay in The Cognitive.
- Your candidates do not sit at a computer. The live interview needs a laptop or desktop browser.
Keep BambooHR or switch: how to start
Switch the HRIS only when the HR side is the problem, and export applicants and employee records from BambooHR before the contract ends. If only hiring is broken, add a hiring tool beside it.
A first week with The Cognitive
- Pick one hard role where BambooHR applicants have not been good enough.
- Write a two-line brief as you would to a colleague, then edit the filters.
- Reach out to the people who fit with a short sequence from your own mailbox (Sourcing Pro).
- Interview the ones who reply and read the scored reports.
- Bring BambooHR in. Connect BambooHR from the BambooHR setup guide so applicants and sourced people sit side by side.
Test it on the role BambooHR applicants have not filled. The trial runs 7 days without a card, and the first 100 people it finds cost nothing. Start free with The Cognitive.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to BambooHR?
The best BambooHR alternative depends on whether you have outgrown its hiring side or its HR side. For hiring, The Cognitive ranks first and works beside BambooHR. For HR and payroll, Rippling, Paylocity and Deel rank highest.
How much does BambooHR cost?
BambooHR prices per employee, per month across three plans: Core, Pro and Elite. Payroll and Benefits Administration are add-ons that cover US employees only. The price of each plan is listed on its website.
What is the best all-in-one recruiting software?
For the hiring chain, The Cognitive scores highest on this list. It finds people outside your applicants, emails them from your own mailbox, runs a live AI video interview and connects to 100+ ATS. It is not an HR system, so records and payroll stay in BambooHR or an HR suite.
Is BambooHR good for recruiting?
BambooHR is fine for recruiting on a small team that hires from applicants. Its ATS posts jobs, emails candidates, sends offer letters and lets candidates book their own interview times. Plans cap open jobs at 5, 25 or 50, and its ATS page describes no outbound search or AI interview.
Gusto vs BambooHR: which is better?
Gusto is better if payroll comes first; BambooHR is better if HR comes first. Gusto shows a monthly base plus a per-person fee on its site and pays contractors in more than 120 countries. BambooHR prices per employee, per month and sells payroll as a US-only add-on.
What is the difference between BambooHR and Rippling?
Rippling is broader: it runs HR, payroll, IT and finance on one system, with payroll in other countries. BambooHR is HR software with payroll and benefits as US-only add-ons. Rippling shows a starting price and quotes the rest; BambooHR shows each plan's price.
Is there a free BambooHR alternative?
None of the tools here is fully free. Workable offers a 15-day free trial, BambooHR offers a free trial, and Gusto lists free account setup. The Cognitive has a 7-day trial with no card that shows your first 100 people free.
