Ashby vs BambooHR, or Ashby with BambooHR
Ashby vs BambooHR is often a false choice. Stay on BambooHR's built in ATS if you hire a handful of people a year and HR runs it. Move recruiting to Ashby once you need sourcing, structured interviews, scheduling and analytics, and keep BambooHR as the HRIS: Ashby pushes accepted hires into it.
Ashby vs BambooHR, side by side
One is a recruiting platform and one is an HR system with hiring inside it. Each cell comes from the vendor's own pages, read 5 October 2026.

Why many teams end up running both
BambooHR vs Ashby only becomes a straight fight if you want one system for everything. Most growing companies do not. Ashby's knowledge base describes a BambooHR integration, available on all its plans, that pushes a candidate's data into BambooHR once they accept an offer, so onboarding starts there.
That makes the real decision narrower: where should recruiting live? BambooHR's own ATS keeps hiring next to the employee record with no second login. Ashby moves hiring into a dedicated tool with its own pipeline, sourcing and analytics, then hands the hire over. The cost is a second system and a second contract.
Signs you have outgrown BambooHR's built in ATS
None of these is a flaw in BambooHR; its ATS was built for HR led hiring. They are the points where a dedicated recruiting platform starts to pay for itself.
- You keep bumping into your plan's limit on open jobs
- You have a recruiter, not only an HR generalist, running hiring
- You need to reach people who have not applied
- Interviewers want structured plans and written debrief summaries
- Leaders ask for pipeline reports beyond sources and funnel
- Scheduling panel interviews takes more than a few emails
Choose Ashby if, choose BambooHR if
Do
- Recruiting is a function with its own team, targets and reporting
- You source outbound and want sequences and a Chrome extension built in
- You want AI that reviews applications against criteria you set
- You already have an HRIS, BambooHR included, for life after the offer
Do not
- Hiring is occasional and HR owns it alongside everything else
- You want one login and one bill for people data and hiring
- Published per employee pricing matters more than recruiting depth
- Offer letters, e-signature and new hire packets cover most of your process
One engineering hire, done each way
The same role, filled once inside BambooHR alone and once with Ashby in front of it. The differences show up in the middle of the process.
- Opening the role In BambooHR, HR posts to job boards from the HRIS. In Ashby, the recruiter opens the job, posts it and can start outbound sequences to sourced people the same day.
- Reviewing who applied BambooHR shows the applicants for the team to review and comment on. Ashby can use AI to surface applicants who meet criteria you defined, without ranking them by number.
- Running interviews BambooHR lets candidates choose a time. Ashby adds interview plans, and its AI Notetaker add-on records, transcribes and summarizes candidate meetings for the debrief.
- Making the hire BambooHR sends an e-signed offer and moves the person into the employee record. In Ashby, the accepted offer is pushed to BambooHR through the integration to start onboarding.
Ashby vs BambooHR pricing, by model
BambooHR publishes per employee monthly pricing, ATS included. Ashby bands price by company size: its smallest plan shows a figure, larger ones are quoted. Running both means two bills. See our BambooHR pricing guide.
A sourcing and interview layer for either setup
A one line brief becomes search filters, and the people found can go straight to a live first interview.
If BambooHR stays your only system, The Cognitive is one way to add what it leaves out: search across ~900M public profiles with verified emails and phones, and live AI interviews of 10 or 20 minutes. Ashby and BambooHR are both among its 60+ ATS integrations, and a note goes back to the candidate.

BambooHR is where an employee lives. Ashby is where a candidate becomes one. The question is whether your hiring is big enough to need its own home.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ashby better than BambooHR?
For recruiting depth, yes: Ashby is a dedicated platform with sourcing, CRM, scheduling, analytics and AI application review. But BambooHR is an HRIS whose ATS is one included module, so it wins on simplicity and on keeping hiring next to employee records. Many companies use Ashby for hiring and BambooHR for everything after the offer.
Does Ashby integrate with BambooHR?
Yes. Ashby's knowledge base describes a BambooHR integration that pushes a candidate's data into BambooHR once they accept an offer, to start onboarding. It says the integration is available on all Ashby plans and needs Organization Admin access to configure in Ashby.
Ashby vs BambooHR pricing: how do they compare?
The models differ. BambooHR publishes per employee monthly pricing across Core, Pro and Elite, with a flat rate for 25 employees or fewer, and every plan includes the ATS. Ashby prices by company size band: its Foundations plan for up to 100 employees shows a figure, while Plus and Enterprise are quoted. Annual commitments earn a discount at Ashby.
Should a startup use BambooHR's ATS or Ashby?
If HR runs a few hires a year, BambooHR's included ATS is usually enough and avoids a second bill. If the startup has a recruiter, hires engineers outbound or wants structured interviews and reporting from the start, Ashby's Foundations plan is aimed at companies of up to 100 employees.
Does BambooHR's ATS have AI?
Not on its applicant tracking page as read on 5 October 2026. BambooHR announced Bamboo AI, a set of agents across its platform, on 21 July 2026, in private beta, and the announcement names reporting, scheduling, payroll and benefits work rather than recruiting. Ashby, by contrast, names AI application review, notetaking, feedback summaries and agents.
Can Ashby replace BambooHR entirely?
No. Ashby is a recruiting platform and does not run payroll, benefits or employee records. It hands hires to an HRIS such as BambooHR, Rippling, Gusto, HiBob or Workday, which are all listed in its knowledge base as post hire integrations. You would replace only BambooHR's hiring module.
