Self evaluation examples you can adapt in 10 minutes
These self evaluation examples cover what a performance review form actually asks: what you achieved, where you fell short, and what you plan next. Every sample is a structure with placeholders rather than a sentence to paste, so the self appraisal you hand in describes your own work.
What a strong self evaluation does
- Answers the question the form asked, in the form's own words
- Puts 1 line of evidence under every claim, so nothing rests on an adjective
- Names a real development area and what you are doing about it
- Ends with 2 or 3 goals your manager could restate from memory
Self evaluation examples: vague wording vs evidence
| What the form asks | A vague answer | An evidence-backed answer | Why the second scores better |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your biggest achievement this period | "I had a really strong year and delivered a lot." | "I owned [project], shipped it by [date], and it moved [metric] from [A] to [B]." | It is checkable. A rater can confirm the date and the number. |
| Quality of work | "My work is always high quality and error free." | "[N] of my [N] releases went out without a rollback, after I added [check] in [month]." | It gives a denominator, so the claim has a size. |
| Communication | "I communicate well with everyone on the team." | "I rewrote the [process] handover doc, and [team] now runs it without asking me." | It names who benefited, which turns a trait into an effect. |
| Teamwork | "I am a team player and always help out." | "I covered [colleague's] queue for [N] weeks during [event] and kept response times inside [target]." | It says what the help cost you and what it protected. |
| An area for development | "I could always improve my time management." | "I under-estimated [task type] twice. Since [month] I add [buffer] and review estimates with [person]." | It admits a specific gap and shows the correction already running. |
How to write a self evaluation in 5 steps
- Gather before you write anything Open your calendar, your tickets, your sent mail and any dashboard you own. Pull the period's dates, accomplishments and numbers into a scratch list first. Aim for 15 to 20 raw work items. You will use about 8.
- Pick 3 to 5 themes, not 20 events Group the raw list into the themes your form scores. If your form has named competencies, use those exact names as your headings. Delivery, quality, collaboration, and 1 thing you learned.
- Put 1 line of evidence under every claim Write the claim, then the proof. If you cannot write the proof line, the claim is not ready and belongs lower down or nowhere. Claim, then date, then number or named outcome.
- Name a development area you are already working on Pick something real and job-relevant, then say what changed since you noticed it. A gap with a correction attached reads as judgement, not weakness. What to include in a self evaluation: 1 honest gap, never 3.
- Close with goals and a request End with 2 or 3 goals for the next period and 1 specific thing you need from your manager. Asking gives the review meeting somewhere to go. "To do [goal] I need [access, budget or time]."
Self evaluation examples by competency
Self appraisal comments by employee example, quality of work
"I shipped [N] pieces of [work type] this period. [N] needed rework, down from [N] last period, after I started [specific check] before handover."
Your own volume, your rework count, and the check you added.
Communication self evaluation examples, including written and spoken work
"I ran the weekly [forum] for [audience]. I cut the deck to [N] slides and moved detail into a written note, so decisions now land in the meeting itself."
The forum you own and the change that made it shorter.
Teamwork self appraisal comments examples
"When [colleague] was out for [N] weeks, I took [their area] on top of my own and kept [measure] inside target without escalating."
The cover you gave, its length, and what stayed on track.
How you handled something that was not working
"[Problem] had been recurring since [month]. I traced it to [cause], proposed [N] options, and we chose [option]. It has not recurred since [date]."
The recurring problem and the date it stopped.
Something you started that nobody asked you to start
"Nobody owned [gap], so I built [thing] in [timeframe]. [N] people now use it weekly and [team] has stopped asking me for [manual task]."
The gap you saw and how many people use the fix.
Customer service self evaluation examples for a client-facing role
"I handled [N] accounts. My [measure] was [X], and I rewrote the [N] most-asked replies as templates so the whole queue answers them the same way."
Your account load and one thing you fixed for everyone.
Dependability, deadlines and follow-through
"I met [N] of [N] committed dates. On the [N] I missed, I flagged the risk [N] days ahead and agreed a new date rather than going quiet."
Your hit rate, and how early you raised the slips.
How you handled a change in priorities or process
"When [change] landed in [month], I learned [tool or process] in [timeframe] and moved [my work] across with [N] days of disruption."
The change, the learning curve, and the cost of the switch.
The pattern
Every line in this page follows the same shape. Name the criterion, cite what actually happened, then state the judgement. Self appraisal comments that skip the middle part are opinions about yourself.
Strengths and weaknesses, paired honestly
Do
- Pair each strength with its cost: what you deprioritised to do it well
- Pick a weakness that is real, job-relevant and already being worked on
- Say what changed since you noticed the gap, with a month attached
- State strengths for self evaluation in units of work, not personality
- Ask for the specific help that would close the gap faster
Do not
- The humble brag: "I care too much" or "I take on too much work"
- A weakness outside your job, which reads as dodging the question
- A gap with no correction attached, which invites the manager to fill it in
- Grading yourself down everywhere so you seem modest
- Listing 5 weaknesses when the form asked for 1

Self evaluation goals examples that survive the next review
A career goal for self evaluation that builds a capability you lack
"Learn [skill] well enough to own [task] unaided by [date], starting with [course or project] and shipping [first deliverable] by [month]."
The first unaided piece of work, and the date it shipped.
A goal that grows what you are responsible for
"Take ownership of [area] from [person] by [date], running it for [N] cycles with [handover checkpoint] agreed up front."
A named handover date and who signs it off.
Work goals examples for self evaluation tied to a number
"Move [metric] from [A] to [B] by [date] by doing [specific change], reviewed monthly with [manager]."
The metric, its starting value, and the review cadence.
A goal that improves how your team works, not just your output
"Run [ritual or doc] for [team] every [interval] from [month], so [recurring problem] stops reaching [person] by [date]."
Whether the recurring problem actually stopped.
Self performance review goals examples aimed at your next role
"Cover [N] of the [N] requirements for [next level] by [date], agreeing with [manager] in [month] which [N] to prioritise."
The requirement list you and your manager agreed.
Mid year review vs year end self evaluation
| What to emphasise | Mid year self evaluation | Year end self appraisal |
|---|---|---|
| Time horizon | The next 6 months. What you will change from here. | The whole period, as a finished account. |
| Goals | Which goals are off track, and what you propose to drop or reset. | Which goals were met, with the evidence for each. |
| What went well this performance period | Early signals worth doubling down on. | The 3 items you want remembered when ratings are calibrated. |
| Development area | Name the gap and ask for the support now, while there is time. | Show the gap and the correction you already made. |
| Evidence | Rougher is fine. Directional numbers are enough. | Dates, volumes and named outcomes. Assume it gets read twice. |

I was accountable for [scope], covering [volume]. I got this wrong when ... Since [month] I ... Next period I will [goal], measured by [measure]. VERBS THAT CARRY EVIDENCE Delivered Owned Rebuilt Reduced Automated Negotiated Mentored Documented Diagnosed Migrated Simplified Unblocked Forecast Escalated Recovered Standardised Handed over PHRASES TO DELETE, AND WHAT TO WRITE INSTEAD "hard worker" -> hours are not output. Name what shipped. "team player" -> say who you covered for, and when. "went above and beyond" -> above and beyond what? Name the baseline. "wore many hats" -> list the 2 or 3 actual scopes. "always" and "never" -> give a count instead. "helped with" -> say what part was yours. "strong communicator" -> name the doc, forum or audience. "passionate about" -> show the thing you did unpaid attention to.
When the period did not go well
A missed year is the hardest self evaluation to write and the one nobody publishes examples for. The instinct is to hide it in soft language. That reliably backfires, because your manager already knows, and vague wording reads as either denial or an invitation to write the account for you.
Write it in 4 moves instead. State plainly what missed and by how much. Separate the part you controlled from the part you did not, without making the second part the whole story. Say what you changed and when. Then give the earliest honest signal that the change is working. An accurate account of a bad period is evidence of judgement, which is worth rating.
Evidence beats adjectives, on both sides of a rating
A Cognitive interview scorecard: each criterion out of 5, an overall score out of 100, and resume claims checked against the answers.
The Cognitive is hiring software, not performance-review software. It does not run employee review cycles, goals or self-assessments. It does show what the discipline on this page looks like when a machine applies it: every rating tied to something the person actually said, and claims marked verified, refuted or unclear with the evidence beside them.
For managers and HR running the employee self evaluation
The self-rating is not a warm-up. Researchers at Harvard Kennedy School, including Iris Bohnet, studied 4 review cycles at a multinational financial services firm between 2015 and 2018 and used a 2016 software glitch that hid self-evaluations as a natural experiment. Manager scores tracked the self-ratings closely. Women rated themselves lower than men, and women of colour rated themselves lowest and finished with the lowest final ratings.
Hiding the self-evaluations did not fix it on its own. In the glitch year managers appear to have anchored on the previous year's self-ratings instead, though women of colour did better where no historical score was available. The recommendation is to withhold self-evaluations until managers submit initial ratings, paired with clear criteria and calibrated rubrics.
Gallup's own numbers explain why the paperwork so often lands badly. Only 29% of employees strongly agree their performance reviews are fair, and 26% that they are accurate. 26% say their performance is evaluated less than once a year. Gallup recommends progress reviews at least every 6 months, and describes effective reviews as achievement-oriented, fair and accurate, and developmental.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write a self evaluation for a performance review?
Gather evidence before you write: calendar, tickets, sent mail, any dashboard you own. Group it into the 3 to 5 themes your form scores, and put 1 line of proof under every claim. Name 1 development area and what you have already changed. Close with 2 or 3 goals and 1 specific request for your manager.
What should you include in a self evaluation?
Your scope for the period, 3 or 4 deliverables with dates and numbers, how you worked against the competencies your form names, an honest account of what missed, goals for the next period, and what you need to hit them. Answer in the form's own wording. If a question does not apply, say so briefly rather than padding.
What are good sentence starters for a self evaluation?
Use openers that force a specific follow-on: "I owned ... and the result was", "I changed [process] after [trigger]", "The evidence for this is", "I got this wrong when ... Since [month] I". The keywords to use in self evaluation writing are verbs that carry proof, such as delivered, rebuilt, reduced, documented and handed over.
What is a good career goal for a self evaluation?
One that someone else could check at the next review. SMART is credited to George T. Doran in Management Review in 1981; accounts of the paper give the original letters as Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic and Time-related, and note that he did not treat all 5 as compulsory at every level. Today it is usually rendered with Achievable and Relevant. Do not force a number onto a goal that has none.
How do you write strengths and weaknesses in a self evaluation?
Write strengths as units of work rather than personality traits, and pair each with what you deprioritised to do it well. For the weakness, pick something real and job-relevant, attach the month you noticed it, and say what you changed. A gap with a correction reads as judgement. A humble brag reads as avoidance.
How long should a self evaluation be?
Match the form. A text box wants 150 to 300 words per question, while a self evaluation essay or paper usually runs 1 to 2 pages. Length is not what gets rated. 3 claims with evidence beat 10 without. If your employer gives no guidance, aim for 1 page and keep the supporting detail in a doc you can bring to the meeting.
What do you write in a self evaluation when the year went badly?
State what missed and by how much, in plain numbers. Separate what you controlled from what you did not, without making the second part the whole answer. Say what you changed and when. Then give the earliest honest sign the change is working. An accurate account of a bad period is itself evidence of judgement.
How do I fill in a self evaluation in Workday?
Workday's performance review process includes a named step called "Complete Self Evaluation for Performance Review", which an employer can skip, automate or have you complete manually. The review document is built from a template of configurable sections, and your administrator sets which ones you can see or edit, so the form differs between employers. Check Workday's own documentation and your HR team's guidance.
Do managers see your self evaluation before they rate you?
Often, and it matters. Harvard Kennedy School research across 4 review cycles at one multinational firm found manager scores tracked employees' self-ratings closely. The researchers recommend withholding self-evaluations until managers submit initial ratings, paired with clear criteria and calibrated rubrics. Ask your HR team what the sequence is in your own cycle.
Does The Cognitive run employee self evaluations?
No. The Cognitive is hiring software: sourcing, outreach, AI interviews and pipeline tracking. It has no performance-management module, no review cycle and no self-assessment form. What it shares with a good self evaluation is the method, scoring each criterion against evidence rather than adjectives.
