What a Caliper assessment actually measures
A Caliper assessment is a personality questionnaire with a reasoning section inside it. Caliper's own page says it covers 22 personality traits plus abstract reasoning, and averages 60 minutes with no time limit. There is no pass mark. Your result is read as fit against a job model for one specific role.
The question everyone actually has
You cannot fail a Caliper assessment. It is built to score fit against a model of one role, so a profile that reads as mismatched for a sales job can read as strong for an analyst job the same week.
From the invitation to the hiring decision
- An employer orders the report Caliper's getting-started guide has the employer enter the job title and description, then pick a report type. Leaving "Let Caliper Decide" selected routes that choice to an account consultant.
- The link reaches you Online, mobile friendly, and no proctor, per Caliper's own product page. It may be branded by the employer or by Talogy rather than by Caliper, which is why the name on the email often does not match the name on the invitation.
- You answer both sections in one sitting Caliper publishes an average of 60 minutes and states there is no time limit. Both the personality items and the reasoning items sit in the same sitting. Talogy's page puts it as no set time limit, typically about one hour.
- The report scores fit, not a mark Caliper says its selection reporting provides an overall fit score against 70 validated job models. The comparison is to a model of the role, so the same answers read differently for a different job.
- Someone interviews you about it Caliper states its selection reports include behavioural interview questions and manager recommendations. The report's designed output is a list of things to go and ask you about.
What is a Caliper assessment?
Caliper assessment A pre-employment questionnaire published by Caliper, founded in 1961 by Herbert M. Greenberg and David G. Mayer and based in Pittsburgh. Its product page describes 22 personality traits plus abstract reasoning. It now carries Talogy branding.
A recruiter sends a link, usually after a first conversation. You answer statements about how you work, then a set of reasoning puzzles. Nobody watches you take it, and the finished report goes to the employer.
How many questions is the Caliper assessment?
The publisher's own current page gives a figure: 98 targeted questions, with no set time limit and about an hour to complete. That is the number to trust, because it is the only one that comes from the people who make the instrument.
Higher counts circulate widely, commonly around 180 items with a 2 hour estimate, and they appear on test-preparation sites rather than on any vendor page. The assessment is untimed either way, so the practical answer is to take the estimate printed in your own invitation, clear a quiet block and stop trying to reconcile the rest. People searching for it as the calipers test end up in the same place.
The two halves of the Caliper Profile
| Personality section | Abstract reasoning section | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | 22 personality traits, per Caliper's product page, read for motivation and working style | Reasoning: Caliper's owner lists cognitive skills and problem solving among what the instrument examines |
| Question format | Candidates describe forced-choice sets, picking the statement most and least like them, plus rating-scale items | Multiple choice pattern questions with a correct answer, as preparation publishers describe them |
| Right answers? | No. It is a self-description, so there is nothing to memorise | Yes. This half is scored for correctness |
| Timed? | No. Caliper states the assessment is untimed and averages 60 minutes | No. The clock does not run here either, which is why rushing costs you |
| How it is reported | Traits feed the profile the employer reads against the role | Reported separately as Abstract Reasoning within the profile |
| What you can prepare | Nothing useful. Answer as you actually work | The question types, which is the one part practice moves |
The 4 abstract reasoning question types
Number series. A run of numbers where you work out the number that completes the sequence.
A pattern running through the row. One publisher notes the patterns range from very simple to very complicated, so expect no fixed difficulty.
Write the differences between neighbours underneath before you look at the options.
Figural analogies. Analogies that compare shapes rather than words.
How a pair of figures relate to each other, which you then apply to a second pair. Neither publisher specifies which transformations appear.
Name the change from the first shape to the second, then apply that same change.
Figural series. A sequence of figures with one space left blank, which you fill.
The rule running through the sequence. The blank can sit at the end, at the beginning, or anywhere in between, so check where it falls first.
Track one element across every frame rather than reading each frame whole.
Matrices. A 3 by 3 set of 9 squares with shapes in 8 of them and 1 left blank.
A pattern that may run horizontally, vertically, or in both directions at once. Which of those applies is part of what you have to work out.
Read across the rows, then down the columns, and check a candidate answer against both.
How a Caliper score is actually read
- Scores place you against a norm group, so a result is a position, not a percentage of anything
- Preparation publishers describe a 1 to 99 job-fit range, commonly read in 3 bands
- Those bands are a reading convention from those publishers, not a cut score Caliper publishes
- Caliper says its selection reporting scores overall fit against 70 validated job models
- Caliper publishes instant results on completion and report delivery within 24 hours
Caliper pre employment testing, before you put it in your funnel
- What is the job model for this role built from, and when was it last reviewed
- Which report variant are we buying: Essentials, Highlights or Quick View
- Quick View covers 10 job models and excludes cognitive ability. Is that enough
- Who on our side is certified to interpret a report before it reaches a manager
- Where does an untimed 60 minute instrument belong in a funnel this length
- What do candidates see afterwards, and who answers them when they ask
- How does this combine with a structured interview rather than replace one
What a Caliper assessment cannot tell you
Caliper states the instrument measures personality characteristics and motivations in order to predict on-the-job behaviours and potential. Read that wording closely. A forced-choice format makes an idealised self-portrait harder to paint, because you are made to choose between statements you like equally. It still records how you characterise yourself.
A disposition is not a demonstrated capability. The instrument was never designed to answer whether the migration on page 2 of a resume shipped, who led it, or what the person decided when it went wrong. Those answers exist, but they live in a conversation, and somebody has to go and have it.
Where US employment law sits on hiring tests
- The EEOC treats personality tests and cognitive tests as employment tests and selection procedures
- The Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures were adopted in 1978 and sit at 29 C.F.R. Part 1607
- A procedure that disproportionately excludes a protected group must be job-related and consistent with business necessity
- Under the ADA, tests must be administered so results reflect the factor measured, not a disability
- This is general information about published guidance, not legal advice for your process
Taking a Caliper assessment
Do
- Answer as the person you already are at work, not the person in the job advert
- Clear an uninterrupted hour, then treat the clock as genuinely off
- Slow down on the reasoning items, since that half is scored for correctness
- Ask the recruiter which report they receive and whether you will see anything
Do not
- Guessing at a job model you cannot see, which tends to produce an inconsistent profile
- Reading a 1 to 99 position as a percentage, a mark, or a pass mark
- Rushing the abstract reasoning section just to get the hour over with
- Buying an answer key for the personality half, where there are no right answers
A benchmark is not a demonstration
A scorecard from a live interview: criteria scored out of 5, an overall out of 100, and resume claims marked against the evidence.
The selection report hands over interview questions, which means the evidence is still out there waiting to be collected. On The Cognitive, a live AI video interview asks against a rubric fixed for the role, adapts its questions to each answer, and marks claims verified, refuted or unclear. It scores conduct, not personality.

Frequently asked questions
What is a caliper assessment?
People asking what is the caliper assessment, or what is caliper assessment, are usually holding a link from an employer. It is a pre-employment questionnaire published by Caliper, founded in 1961 and now carrying Talogy branding. Caliper's product page describes 22 personality traits plus abstract reasoning, untimed, averaging 60 minutes.
What is a caliper assessment test, and is it a personality test?
It is mostly a caliper personality assessment, with a reasoning section inside it. Searches for a caliper personality test or a caliper personality assessment test find the self-description half, where you answer statements about how you work. The reasoning section sits in the same sitting and is reported separately as Abstract Reasoning. Only that second half is scored for correctness.
Can you fail a caliper test?
No. Caliper describes its selection reporting as an overall fit score against 70 validated job models, which means your answers are compared with a model of one specific role rather than a pass mark. The same profile can read as strong alignment for one job and a poor match for another. What is a caliper test measuring is fit, not merit.
How long does the Caliper assessment take, and how many questions is it?
Caliper and Talogy both publish an average of about 60 minutes with no time limit. Talogy's current page gives 98 targeted questions. Higher figures, commonly around 180 items and 2 hours, circulate on test-preparation sites and do not come from the publisher. Since the assessment is untimed, use the estimate in your own invitation and clear an uninterrupted block.
What is the Caliper Profile, and is it the same thing?
Yes. The caliper profile is the instrument's former formal name, and a caliper profile assessment is the same questionnaire. Talogy now sells it as the Talogy Caliper personality assessment, previously known as Caliper Profile. Employers and recruiters still call it the Caliper, so an invitation branded Talogy and a search for Caliper point at one product.
Do candidates see their Caliper results?
Usually not directly. Preparation publishers report that the finished report goes to the employer and that feedback is handled there. Caliper tells employers results are instant on completion with report delivery within 24 hours, so the employer has it quickly. Ask the recruiter what they will share before you take it, because the answer varies by organisation.
Can you prepare for the Caliper assessment?
Partly. The abstract reasoning section responds to practice on its 4 question types: number series, figural analogies, figural series and matrices. The forced-choice personality half has no right answers to learn. Trying to guess what an unseen job model wants usually produces an inconsistent profile, which helps nobody, including you.
How is the Caliper used for caliper pre employment testing, and what does it cost?
Caliper publishes 3 report families: Selection, Coaching and Development, and Talent Analytics. Selection reports include behavioural interview questions and manager recommendations, so the instrument feeds an interview rather than ending one. Employers often send it under their own branding, which is why searches for a calipers assessment plus a company name are common. Caliper does not publish per-candidate pricing, so ask for a quote.
