Pick SmartRecruiters if you run SAP SuccessFactors or hire at volume and want AI screening and chat for candidates.
Ashby vs SmartRecruiters, side by side

Two published starting prices, and where each one applies
Unusually for a pair of corporate ATSs, both show a number. Ashby prints one for Foundations, which covers companies of up to 100 employees and is priced by headcount band rather than per seat. SmartRecruiters prints a starting figure for Essential, its entry plan with ATS, CRM, onboarding, SMS, job distribution and scheduling.
The floors differ. SmartRecruiters tells smaller enquirers it is best suited to organisations with at least 50 employees and a significant number of open requisitions. Ashby moves to custom pricing once a company passes 100 people. So a 40 person startup will find Ashby's entry plan aimed at it, while a 600 person company gets a quote from both.

Ashby and SmartRecruiters in day to day use
Ashby is built around the interview plan. A stage change can send a booking link, a questionnaire or a take-home assignment, and the AI flags which applicants meet the criteria a recruiter wrote, citing the resume, without putting a number on anyone. Hiring managers review applications and leave feedback from a browser on their phone.
SmartRecruiters leans on its Winston layer as the plan rises. Winston Companion takes repetitive steps from screening to scheduling, Winston Match proposes candidates for a role, and on High Volume Winston Chat answers candidates on the career site from your own knowledge base. SmartRecruiters' own line is that if you can shop on Amazon, you can use it.
Questions to ask in both demos
Each vendor publishes a comparison favouring itself. Ashby has one against SmartRecruiters on its own site. These questions get past the pitch.
- Show the exact plan that includes every feature you watched in the demo
- Which AI features consume credits, and what happens when they run out
- How does history move across from our current ATS, and in what format
- Which of our HRIS, assessment and background check tools connect today
- Can a hiring manager approve an offer without logging in on a laptop
- How is candidate SMS volume counted and charged above the allowance
Ashby vs SmartRecruiters pricing, by model
Ashby charges one price for the whole platform, set by company size, with add-ons for the notetaker and advanced scheduling. SmartRecruiters climbs in 4 capability tiers, and only Essential shows a starting figure.
Sourcing outside your ATS and a first interview, for either one

Both ATSs search the people already in them. The Cognitive looks further, across ~900M public profiles with verified emails and phones, and can then run a live 10 or 20 minute AI interview. It connects to Ashby and SmartRecruiters among 60+ ATS integrations, writing a note back for imported candidates.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ashby better than SmartRecruiters?
For a company under about 1,000 people that hires through structured interviews and sources outbound, Ashby's plans include more of that work by default. For an SAP SuccessFactors customer, or an employer hiring in large waves that wants AI screening and a candidate chatbot, SmartRecruiters' High Volume and Complete plans are built for it.
Ashby vs SmartRecruiters pricing: how do they compare?
Both publish one figure. Ashby shows a price for Foundations, its plan for up to 100 employees, priced by company size rather than seats, and quotes Plus and Enterprise. SmartRecruiters shows a starting price for Essential and asks you to request pricing for Professional, High Volume and Complete.
Is SmartRecruiters owned by SAP?
SmartRecruiters now presents itself as "part of SAP SuccessFactors" and describes best of breed recruiting natively integrated with SAP, while keeping its own plans and pricing page. Ashby is an independent company.
Does SmartRecruiters work for small companies?
SmartRecruiters' demo form says its product is best suited to organisations with at least 50 employees and a significant number of open requisitions. Ashby's Foundations plan is aimed at companies of up to 100 employees, so very small teams usually find Ashby's entry point closer to their size.
Can staffing agencies use Ashby or SmartRecruiters?
SmartRecruiters says it is best suited to corporate hiring and does not currently support agency organisations. Ashby is also written for in-house teams, but its Agency Collaboration feature lets outside agencies submit candidates into the jobs a client chooses.
Which has better AI, Ashby or SmartRecruiters?
They aim AI differently. Ashby uses AI to check applicants against criteria you write, with citations and no rankings or numerical ratings, plus agents and an AI report builder. SmartRecruiters' Winston matches candidates, shortlists in place of manual resume review and chats with applicants, with the screening and chat on its higher plans.
How do I move from SmartRecruiters to Ashby?
Ashby's FAQ offers API migration for Greenhouse and Lever and a CSV import tool for other ATSs, so SmartRecruiters history arrives as prepared CSV files. Rebuild career site links, approval chains and integrations as part of the same project.
