HireVue vs Truffle, sized to your hiring team

HireVue vs Truffle mostly splits on team size and buying style. HireVue suits large employers that want two-way AI interviews, validated assessments and audit paperwork, bought through a demo. Truffle suits lean teams that want resumes, one-way video answers and assessments ranked in one list, on published credit plans with a 7 day free trial.

A recorded answer against a live follow-up

The biggest product difference is what happens after a candidate answers. In Truffle's one-way interview the candidate sees your question, records a reply and moves on. Truffle then reads every answer against your criteria and ranks the applicant, quoting the line that earned each score.

HireVue's AI Interviewer listens and responds. Its page says AI agents ask, probe and record, in a natural two-way conversation, then evaluate each response against role criteria and explain why it met them or not. A thin answer gets a second question instead of a low score.

How Truffle's credit pricing works

Truffle publishes its plans. Rather than quote figures that change, here is the mechanism it describes.

  1. Pick a monthly pool Each plan comes with one pool of credits for the month, sized to roughly how many roles you screen.
  2. Spend across methods A resume scored costs 1 credit, an assessed candidate 2, and a completed one-way interview 5.
  3. Pay only for results Truffle charges when a screening produces a result. A candidate who never finishes costs nothing.
  4. Roll over or top up Most plans roll unused credits over for 12 months, and extra credits can be bought mid-hire.

The upside and the trade-off of each

What it feels like for the candidate

Truffle sends one link that works in any browser. The candidate records answers when it suits them, which suits shift workers and students. One customer quoted on Truffle's homepage says candidates found the process refreshingly straightforward.

HireVue gives the candidate an always-on AI conversation, then possibly an assessment and a live interview. It lists accommodation requests and an AI opt-out path, with human support behind them. More steps can mean more signal, but measure drop-off in a pilot before you commit.

If you want a live interview without the enterprise price tag

A follow-up question decided during the conversation, because the first answer left something out.

Teams between these two sometimes want a live conversation at a published price. The Cognitive runs a live, two-way AI video interview of 10 or 20 minutes, scored 1 to 5 per criterion with overall written feedback, transcript and recording, and can first find candidates across ~900M public profiles with verified emails and phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is Truffle a good HireVue alternative for small businesses?

For many, yes. Truffle is built for lean teams: a 7 day trial with no card, published credit plans, and it works with no ATS at all. It covers resume scoring, one-way video or audio interviews and assessments. What you give up is HireVue's two-way AI conversation, its validated assessment science and its enterprise integrations.

What is the difference between HireVue and Truffle?

HireVue is an enterprise selection platform with a two-way AI Interviewer, a full assessments line and live video interviews, sold after a demo. Truffle is a self-serve screening tool where candidates record one-way answers, take assessments and get ranked in one list with quoted evidence. The format and the buyer differ more than the features.

HireVue vs Truffle pricing: which is cheaper?

Truffle publishes its prices and HireVue does not, so only one side can be checked. Truffle sells monthly plans built on a credit pool: 1 credit per resume, 2 per assessed candidate, 5 per completed interview. HireVue quotes after a demo. Truffle says it aims to match the cheapest competitor at every scale; ask HireVue for a quote to compare.

Does Truffle ask follow-up questions like HireVue?

Truffle's interviews are one-way: candidates record answers to the questions you set, on their own time. Its pages describe no live follow-up during the interview. HireVue's AI Interviewer says it asks probing follow-up questions in a two-way conversation. If depth on each answer matters, test both with the same role.

Can Truffle connect to my ATS?

Truffle has native connectors for Ashby, Breezy HR and Indeed, and says everything else, including Greenhouse, Lever, Workable and Bullhorn, connects through Zapier. A REST API and webhooks are available on custom plans. It syncs back the match score, AI summary, qualification answers and assessment results. HireVue lists deeper enterprise integrations with Workday, SAP and Oracle.

Which is better for high-volume hiring, HireVue or Truffle?

Both say they serve it at different scales. HireVue is built for enterprise volume with scheduling automation, assessments and certified ATS integrations. Truffle is built for small teams facing a flood of applicants, such as franchises, BPOs and staffing agencies. If you have a TA department, look at HireVue; if hiring is one person's side job, Truffle.

Do HireVue and Truffle use AI to reject candidates?

Neither describes automatic rejection. HireVue says AI informs and people decide, with human approval of requirements and review. Truffle ranks candidates and leaves Advance, Hold and Reject buttons for you to press. In both, a human makes the call, so check how your team uses the ranking.

Do HireVue and Truffle both offer assessments?

Yes, with different depth. HireVue sells assessments as a product line of their own, with auto-scored coding exercises, game-based tests, language checks and simulations, plus an Assessment Builder for custom batteries. Truffle bundles its talent assessments, including a personality profile, into every plan and keeps a public library of 27 skills tests and rubrics you can browse before signing up.
