Recruiting certifications that actually exist
Recruiting certifications are credentials issued by training bodies and HR associations that test recruiting knowledge and expire on a schedule. AIRS, SHRM, HRCI, NAPS, ASA and the sourcing bodies each issue different ones. Choose by who issues it, what it examines, how long it lasts and what renewal costs you in hours.
Certification or certificate?
Recruiting certification An exam-based credential from a training body or HR association. You sit an assessment with a pass mark, you can fail it, and most recruiting certifications lapse unless you renew on the issuer's clock.
A certificate program is different. Recruiting courses certification often means completion, sometimes on a capstone project rather than a proctored exam. Both are worth having. Only a certified recruiter certification makes you certified in the strict sense.

What each credential actually examines
Professional Recruiter Certification, the PRC. AIRS positions it as moving recruiting from a transactional process to a strategic business function.
Aligning recruiting to business goals, labour market intelligence, building proactive talent pipelines, candidate engagement, and using AI recruiting tools.
Enrolment includes 12 months of access to training and coaching, but the certification itself runs 2 years.
SearchLab, the program behind the certified internet recruiter credentials. One enrolment, two designations on the way out.
Advanced Boolean and X-ray techniques, OSINT and investigative sourcing methods, and named approaches including PeelBack, PeerSearch and domain-based searching.
It awards both CIR and ACIR, so check you are not paying twice for overlapping material.
The Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential. Earned by doing the work rather than by sitting one exam at a test centre.
An instructor-led program, Talent Acquisition: Creating Your Organization's Strategy, three eLearning courses on global hiring, inclusion and diversity, and virtual talent acquisition, then a knowledge assessment.
SHRM lists four bonus videos as optional. They are not required to earn the credential.
aPHR and PHR. The HR-side route, and the one most likely to be recognised by an HR leader rather than a sourcing community.
aPHR requires no HR experience at all. PHR requires 1 year with a master's, 2 years with a bachelor's, or 4 years in a professional-level HR role.
HRCI charges an application fee on top of the exam fee, and states that approved applications are non-refundable.
CPC and CTS, the agency-side credentials. NAPS opens both to anyone in the talent acquisition and employment transition process.
Employment law and its implications for direct-hire and temporary staffing work, discrimination law, and protocols for identifying, selecting and placing candidates.
Both exams run 150 questions, and you must answer 113 correctly inside 2 hours.
CPSP-A from Sourcing Certifications. The only exam here that makes you source live to answer it.
Fifty multiple-choice questions across Exploratory Research, Google Search, X-Ray Searches, LinkedIn, Social Sourcing and Cross-Referencing, answered by performing real sourcing tasks.
CPSP also names an unrelated supply-chain credential from ISCEA. Check the issuer before you pay.
The part nobody budgets for
Most people price the exam and forget the renewal. AIRS retakes cost nothing. NAPS asks for 20 continuing education hours every year, and 17 of them must be NAPS programs, which is a standing commitment to one provider.
How to choose a recruiting certification in 5 steps
- Name the job you want next, not the one you have Agency, in-house talent acquisition, sourcing and technical recruiting each point at a different issuer. Pick the desk first and the credential follows. A billing desk heading towards executive recruiter training reads differently from an in-house TA specialist track.
- Decide whether you want an exam or coursework An exam with a pass mark signals differently from a completion certificate. Neither is better. Know which one you are buying before you enrol.
- Check what it examines, not what it is called Open the issuer's syllabus. Two credentials with similar names can cover Boolean and OSINT in one case and employment law in the other. The word "recruiter" in a credential name tells you almost nothing about its content.
- Price the renewal, not the enrolment Work out the hours as well as the fee. A free retake every 2 years and 20 mandatory hours a year are very different commitments.
- Check whether it feeds a credential you already hold Several recruiting credentials carry recertification credit. The AIRS PRC lists 6.5 SHRM PDCs and 6.5 HRCI HR credit; the SHRM specialty credential carries 22 PDCs. If you already hold SHRM-CP or PHR, the right choice pays for part of your next renewal.
Talent acquisition certification or recruiter certification?
The split is about who issues the credential, not about seniority. SHRM and HRCI sit on the HR side, and their talent acquisition certifications assume you work inside an employer. SHRM states you do not need to be SHRM-certified first, and HRCI's aPHR requires no HR experience, so both talent acquisition certification courses are open to people early in the function.
NAPS and ASA sit on the staffing-industry side. Their exams examine employment law as it applies to placement work, including the law specific to temporary services and the state licensing rules that apply to direct-hire firms. If you bill for placements, a recruitment certification from that side speaks to the work you actually do.
Certification exams at a glance
| Exam | Questions | Time | To pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| HRCI aPHR | 65 scored plus 25 pretest | 1 hour 45 minutes | Scoring rules published by HRCI |
| HRCI PHR | 90 scored plus 25 pretest | 2 hours | Scoring rules published by HRCI |
| SHRM-CP | 134 items, 80 knowledge and 54 situational judgment, 24 of them field-test | 4 hours, including 3 hours 40 minutes of testing | Scoring rules published by SHRM |
| NAPS CPC and CTS | 150 | 2 hours | 113 correct, which is 75 percent |
| CPSP-A | 50, each worth 2 to 4 points, randomised from a pool | 2 attempts inside a 9-day window | 80 percent of the available points |
Free recruiting certifications, honestly
- Every independent issuer on this page charges a fee for its exam or program.
- Searches for free certifications for recruiters mostly land on vendor academies and course-completion certificates, not renewable credentials.
- One widely listed free tech-recruiting course has moved to a new provider. Confirm it still runs before planning on it.
- If cost is the constraint, association membership usually cuts the exam fee further than any free course helps.
What happened to the LinkedIn recruiter certification
LinkedIn published an exam preparation curriculum for a credential called LinkedIn Certified Professional - Recruiter, with a copyright line running 2013 to 2018. It listed self-paced tutorials and tip sheets on LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search, search logic and filtering. Those prep materials are still findable, which is why the credential keeps appearing on lists.
LinkedIn's current Talent Solutions Learning Center presents learning paths, webinars, tutorials and tip sheets. No certification exam or certified-professional designation appears on it, and the only badge we found was attached to a community learning challenge. Ask LinkedIn directly before you plan around a linkedin certified professional recruiter credential.
The skill these credentials certify
Advanced Filters, split into the person and their current employer. The same separation a sourcing credential teaches, without a query string.
Sourcing credentials examine Boolean and X-ray because that is how you separate what a person knows from what their employer happens to use. The Cognitive does that separation in structured filters across ~900M profiles, from a one-line brief written in plain English.
Both are worth having
A credential teaches you to judge a pool. A sourcing tool widens the pool you have to judge. Try the sourcing side on your next open role: Start free at https://app.thecognitive.io/signup.
Before you enrol
- Confirm the credential appears in the issuer's current catalogue, not just a blog listing
- Read the syllabus on the issuer's own site, start to finish
- Check the fee on the issuer's page. Fees change and members often pay less
- Look for a separate application fee sitting on top of the exam fee
- Diary the renewal date and the credit requirement today
- Check whether it feeds recertification credit for a credential you already hold
- Confirm the format: proctored exam, online assessment or a capstone project

Frequently asked questions
What is the best recruiting certification?
There is no single best one. The right choice depends on whether you work agency-side or in-house, and whether you source or close. NAPS examines employment law for direct-hire and temporary staffing work. The best talent acquisition certification for an in-house recruiter is usually SHRM's specialty credential, which is open without prior SHRM certification. ASA covers staffing firm work. Read that issuer's syllabus.
What is the Certified Internet Recruiter (CIR) certification?
CIR is an AIRS designation awarded through the SearchLab program, which also awards the ACIR. The certified internet recruiter certification material covers advanced Boolean and X-ray techniques, OSINT and investigative sourcing, and named methods including PeelBack, PeerSearch and domain-based searching. AIRS states its certifications are valid for 2 full years, after which you retake the assessment at no cost.
What is the Professional Recruiter Certification (PRC)?
The PRC is an AIRS credential aimed at recruiters moving from transactional work to a strategic business function. It covers aligning recruiting to business goals, labour market intelligence, proactive pipeline building, candidate engagement and AI recruiting tools. AIRS lists it as carrying 6.5 PDCs toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification and 6.5 HRCI HR (General) credit. It is valid for 2 years.
Are there free recruiting certifications?
Not from the independent issuers listed here. AIRS, SHRM, HRCI, NAPS, ASA and Sourcing Certifications all charge. What is free tends to be a vendor academy or a course-completion certificate rather than a renewable, exam-based credential. One widely cited free tech-recruiting course has moved to a new provider, so confirm it still runs before you rely on it.
Which talent acquisition certification should an in-house recruiter get?
Two routes are open without prior HR credentials. The SHRM Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential does not require you to be SHRM-certified first and does not expire once obtained. For an HRCI talent acquisition certification route, aPHR requires no HR experience at all, which suits a talent acquisition specialist certification search early in a career. PHR requires 1 to 4 years depending on your degree.
Do recruiting certifications expire?
Most do, on very different clocks. AIRS certifications are valid for 2 years and you retake the assessment for free. HRCI's aPHR and PHR run 3 years, needing 45 and 60 recertification credits respectively or a retake. ASA credentials need 30 hours over 3 years. NAPS requires 20 contact hours annually. SHRM specialty credentials are evergreen and do not expire.
Is there a LinkedIn recruiter certification?
LinkedIn published exam preparation material for a credential named LinkedIn Certified Professional - Recruiter, covering LinkedIn Recruiter, Boolean search, search logic and filtering. Its current Talent Solutions Learning Center presents learning paths, webinars and tip sheets rather than a certification exam, and shows no certified-professional designation. Check with LinkedIn before planning around it, and treat any fee or validity period quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed.
What certification do technical recruiters need?
None is required to work as one. AIRS publishes a Certified Technical Recruiter designation in its catalogue, which is the most direct technical recruiter certification on this list. If you want a tech recruiter certification that matches the day job, sourcing-heavy recruiters often get more from SearchLab's Boolean, X-ray and OSINT material, since finding engineers who are not applying is the harder half.
What staffing industry certifications exist for agency recruiters?
NAPS issues the CPC for direct-hire and staffing professionals and the CTS for temporary staffing specialists, both 150-question exams. ASA issues the Certified Staffing Professional, Technical Services Certified, Certified Search Consultant and Certified Health Care Staffing Professional. ASA notes that anyone earning the TSC automatically earns the CSP, so check the overlap before enrolling in both.
