Recruiter training that changes what you do on Monday
Recruiter training covers sourcing technique, intake meetings, screening, hiring manager partnership, analytics and closing. Courses run from a few hours to more than 40, self paced or instructor led. A course leaves you with knowledge, a certification leaves you with a renewable credential. Pick by the hours you can actually protect each week.
Training or certification?
Recruiter training A course or program that teaches recruiting skills. It publishes hours and a format, it ends in a completion certificate or in nothing at all, and you cannot fail it in any meaningful sense.
A certification is a credential you sit for, can fail, and must renew on the issuer's clock. AIRS certifications run 2 years before a retake. Our recruiter certifications page covers that side at /resources/recruiter-certifications.
Recruitment training courses compared by hours and format
| Program | Provider | Format | Hours or duration | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Recruiter Certification, the PRC | AIRS | OnDemand and instructor-led, both included | 12 months of unlimited access to training and coaching | Recruiters moving from transactional work to business alignment |
| Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential | SHRM | 1 instructor-led program, 3 eLearning courses, then an assessment | Not published as an hours figure. It earns 22 PDCs | In-house TA teams. Check eligibility with SHRM first |
| Sourcing and Recruitment Certificate Program | AIHR | 100 percent online and self-paced, 12 months of access | About 43 hours. AIHR suggests 3.5 hours a week over 12 weeks | Sourcers who want screening and analytics as well |
| Strategic Talent Acquisition Certificate Program | AIHR | Online and self-paced | 38.6 hours, as listed in AIHR's own course catalogue | TA leads building a strategy rather than a pipeline |
| Tech Recruiter Certification 2.0 | Recruiting Innovation | Online courses, handbooks and quizzes, then a final assessment | 4 weeks, including a 2 hour written exercise to submit | Recruiters filling engineering roles they do not understand yet |
| Staffing Pro Stack | ASA | Online, self-paced, led by industry experts, with discussion | Not published. 3 tracks: sales, recruiting and leadership | Staffing desks with several years of experience, per ASA |
Recruitment training for agency desks, talent acquisition training in-house
Agency training leans towards the commercial half of the job. AIRS sells classes on negotiating and closing, selling the career opportunity, and cold calling. ASA built its staffing credential around federal labour and employment law seen from a staffing perspective, and its training tracks start with sales. Client recruitment training is really business development with a candidate attached.
In-house talent acquisition training leans the other way. SHRM's credential names global hiring, inclusion and diversity, and virtual talent acquisition as its three eLearning courses. AIHR's program gives 9 hours to recruitment analytics and 5 to employer branding. UK teams often file recruitment and training under one budget and call this discipline resourcing training. Same skills, different centre of gravity.
Recruiter training topics a program should actually cover
- Running the job intake meeting, and writing the bar down before anyone searches
- Sourcing technique, including Boolean search and where passive people actually are
- Screening method: judging against the job rather than against the resume
- Hiring manager partnership, including how to disagree and still be invited back
- Recruitment analytics and funnel measurement, the largest block in any published curriculum
- Employer branding and recruitment marketing, so outbound has something to point at
- Negotiating and closing, treated as its own discipline rather than an afterthought
- Domain knowledge for the roles you fill: what the work is, not how to pitch it
What makes a great recruiter, and what it looks like when it is missing
| Attribute | What it looks like | What it looks like when it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Runs a real intake | Leaves the kickoff with an agreed, written bar and 3 example profiles the manager has judged | Searches off the job ad, then discovers the real requirement in the rejection feedback |
| Sources rather than waits | Builds a named list before the ad goes live and works it, including people not looking | Pipeline is whoever applied this week, so quality tracks the ad spend |
| Screens against the job | Assesses skills as related to the particular job, the standard EEOC guidance sets for selection | Screens on company logos, school names and tenure shapes that nobody tied to the work |
| Can tell a hiring manager no | Brings evidence from the market and renegotiates the bar instead of silently failing the search | Accepts an impossible spec, sources for 6 weeks, and the role is blamed on the market |
| Measures the funnel | Knows which stage loses people and can say so with numbers, not impressions | Reports activity: profiles sent, calls made, with no view of where offers die |
| Knows the work | Can describe what the role does daily and why a good candidate would find it interesting | Reads the tech stack aloud and cannot answer the first real question a candidate asks |
How to be a successful recruiter without paying for a course
- Run an intake before you search. Most recruitment tips for recruiters are downstream of skipping it.
- Write the bar down, then look at profiles. Not the other way around.
- Measure where your funnel loses people this quarter, and fix that one stage.
- Learn the work the role does. It is the shortest route from good recruiter to great one.
The separation sourcing training exists to teach
Advanced Filters, split into the person and their current employer. The separation a Boolean class teaches, without the query string.
Boolean training exists to teach one distinction: what the person knows, versus what their current employer happens to use. The Cognitive makes that distinction in structured filters across ~900M profiles, from a one-line brief written in plain English.
How to choose between recruiter training courses in 5 steps
- Decide which desk you are training for Agency work points at closing, negotiation and staffing law. In-house work points at strategy, employer brand and analytics. The wrong half is an expensive way to be bored.
- Count the hours you can genuinely protect Then read the published hours, not the price. AIHR suggests 3.5 hours a week over 12 weeks for a 43 hour program, which is a real commitment on a full desk. Two hours a week is a short course. Four is a certificate program.
- Check the format before you check anything else Self-paced, instructor-led or both. AIRS includes both formats in the PRC. AIHR and ASA's courses for recruiters are self-paced online, which suits some people and defeats others.
- Check what you are left holding A completion certificate after a capstone project, or a credential with an expiry date. AIHR ends in a practical capstone. AIRS certifications last 2 years, then you retake.
- Check whether it feeds credit you already owe The AIRS PRC lists 6.5 PDCs toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP and 6.5 HRCI HR (General) credit. SHRM's specialty credential carries 22 PDCs. If you already recertify, some recruiting courses pay for themselves.
Recruiting courses online, and what self-paced really costs you
Self-paced is the dominant online format. AIHR's program is 100 percent online with 12 months of access; ASA's tracks are online, self-paced experiences with participant discussion. That access period is generous on purpose, because the failure mode for recruitment courses online is not difficulty. It is abandonment around week 5, when a requisition lands.
Which is why the weekly pace an issuer publishes tells you more than the total. AIHR's own two pages list the same program at about 43 hours and at 42.5 hours, half an hour apart. Read the program page, not a summary, before you plan a talent acquisition online course around a number. Hiring courses vary far more than their titles suggest.
Free and online, honestly
Several recruiting-software vendors publish free academies, and they are a reasonable place to start. What is free is almost always a course-completion certificate rather than a renewable credential, so treat it as training, not as a qualification.
What each program actually teaches
The Professional Recruiter Certification. AIRS frames it as moving recruiting from a transactional process to a strategic business function.
Labor market insights and talent intelligence, advanced sourcing techniques including Boolean search, proactive pipelines, candidate engagement, and using AI tools to enhance efficiency.
Enrolment includes 12 months of access to training and coaching. Check the current fee and formats on the AIRS product page.
The Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential. A talent acquisition course earned by working through four pieces rather than sitting one exam.
An instructor-led program on creating your organization's talent acquisition strategy, then eLearning on global hiring, inclusion and diversity, and virtual talent acquisition, then a knowledge assessment.
Four bonus videos are optional. Confirm the current program schedule and member pricing with SHRM directly.
The Sourcing and Recruitment Certificate Program. The only program here that publishes hours, modules and lessons for every part of its curriculum.
Job intake, 3 hours. Talent sourcing, 6. Screening methods, 6. AI tutorials, 2. Employer branding, 5. Rewards and negotiation, 3. Recruitment analytics, 9 hours across 5 modules.
It closes with a practical capstone project, and the certificate follows completion. Confirm hours on the program page itself.
Four classes for tech recruiters: How Developers Work, What Developers Use, When Developers Grow, and Why Developers Search.
Five technology specialists' workflows, the tools and languages key roles use, reading seniority through a talent persona model, and each specialist's top priorities and red flags.
The certification bundle states 4 weeks and a 2 hour written exercise. Check the current class list at the source.
The staffing-industry route. The Certified Staffing Professional sits alongside a separate credentialing program, the Staffing Pro Stack.
CSP covers essential federal labor and employment law from a staffing perspective, developed by employment attorneys and staffing leaders. The Pro Stack runs sales, recruiting and leadership tracks.
ASA aims the Pro Stack at several years of experience and does not publish the recruiting track's curriculum. Ask before committing a team.
OFCCP training for recruiters, as the rules stand in 2026
Most OFCCP training for recruiters written before 2025 is now partly obsolete. The Department of Labor's current OFCCP pages record Executive Order 11246 as revoked by Executive Order 14173 on 21 January 2025, and state that Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act and VEVRAA, with their implementing regulations, remain in effect.
VEVRAA still requires covered federal contractors to undertake outreach and positive recruitment reasonably designed to recruit protected veterans, to evaluate those efforts annually and document the criteria used and the conclusion reached, and to try alternative methods when an effort is not effective. Records run 3 years and include job openings, jobs filled and applicant counts. Check DOL and your own counsel, not an article.
Job ads and screening: what EEOC guidance says training should stop
Do
- Judge every candidate against the job, using criteria tied to what the role actually requires.
- Show that a selection procedure is job-related and consistent with business necessity before it is used.
- Evaluate an individual's skills as related to the particular job in question, which is the EEOC standard.
- Widen sourcing beyond referrals, so the pool is not shaped by who already works here.
Do not
- Publishing an ad that shows a preference on a protected basis, or that discourages people from applying.
- Writing for recent college graduates, EEOC's own example of an age-discouraging advertisement.
- Relying on word-of-mouth recruiting, which can be illegal when it produces a homogeneous workforce.
- Keeping a neutral-looking test that disproportionately excludes people and has no job-related justification.
Recruitment training for hiring managers, run by you
- Agree the bar in the intake, in writing Before the first search, not after the first rejection. Walk through 3 real profiles together and record what made each a yes or a no. That transcript is the specification.
- Teach the ad and screening rules that create exposure Managers write ad copy and screening notes without knowing what EEOC guidance says. Fifteen minutes on protected characteristics and job-relatedness prevents most of it.
- Give them a written scoring basis Agree the criteria before interviews start, tied to the job. A decision that can be explained in terms of the work is both fairer and easier to defend. The full version is at /blog/train-hiring-managers.
Where training stops and tooling starts
A one-line plain-English brief, read into structured requirements before the search runs. The output of a good intake, in software.
Training teaches you to judge a pool. A tool widens the pool you have to judge. Neither replaces the other, and a course will not fix a spec nobody agreed. Try the sourcing half on your next open role: Start free at https://app.thecognitive.io/signup.

Frequently asked questions
How do I become a recruiter with no experience?
Most training for recruiters is open enrolment. AIHR's sourcing and recruitment program is self-paced online, and AIRS runs both OnDemand and instructor-led formats. Start with a recruiter training program that teaches intake, sourcing and screening, then look at credentials once you know which desk you want. Recruitment training for recruiters new to the work should cover method before tooling. Our recruiter certifications page covers that second step.
What is the best recruiter training program?
There is no single best one. Agency desks get more from closing, negotiation and staffing law, which is where AIRS and ASA concentrate. In-house talent acquisition gets more from strategy, employer brand and analytics, which is where SHRM and AIHR concentrate. Choose the half that matches the work, then choose by the hours you can protect each week. Fees change, so check the issuer.
How long does recruiter training take?
It ranges widely. AIHR's Sourcing and Recruitment program states about 43 hours and recommends 3.5 hours a week over 12 weeks, with 12 months of access. Recruiting Innovation's tech bundle states 4 weeks including a 2 hour written exercise. AIRS includes 12 months of unlimited access to training and coaching with the PRC. Most recruitment training courses publish this on the program page.
What is the difference between recruiter training and a recruiting certification?
Training teaches. Certification tests, and usually expires. AIRS states its certifications are valid for 2 full years, after which you retake the assessment. AIHR's program ends in a practical capstone project rather than a proctored exam, so it produces a certificate on completion. Recruiting courses and recruitment courses are worth taking either way, but only one of the two makes you certified.
What should recruiter training cover?
Eight recruiter training topics come up across independent issuers: job intake, sourcing technique including Boolean, screening method, hiring manager partnership, recruitment analytics, employer branding, closing and negotiation, and domain knowledge for the roles you fill. The surprise for most people building recruiting training topics internally is that analytics is the largest block in AIHR's published curriculum at 9 hours, ahead of sourcing itself.
What makes a great recruiter?
Behaviour, not personality. A great recruiter runs a real intake and leaves with a written bar, sources instead of waiting for applicants, screens against the job rather than the resume, can tell a hiring manager no with evidence, knows which stage of the funnel loses people, and understands the work the role does. Anyone asking how to be a good recruiter is asking about habits, and those traits of a good recruiter are trainable.
Are there recruiting courses online?
Yes, and self-paced online is now the dominant format. AIHR's program is 100 percent online with 12 months of access. ASA's Staffing Pro Stack runs as online, self-paced experiences with participant discussion. The constraint on talent acquisition courses online is finishing rather than difficulty, so read the weekly pace an issuer recommends before you commit to the total.
What talent acquisition training fits an in-house recruiter?
Two routes suit corporate talent acquisition training. SHRM's Talent Acquisition Specialty Credential is earned through one instructor-led program, three eLearning courses on global hiring, inclusion and diversity, and virtual talent acquisition, then a knowledge assessment. Confirm eligibility with SHRM before you book. For a talent acquisition specialist training route with published hours, AIHR lists its Strategic Talent Acquisition program at 38.6 hours. Both are training for talent acquisition strategy, not sourcing drills.
What is OFCCP training for recruiters, and is it still required?
It is compliance training for recruiters at federal contractors, and what it should cover changed. DOL's current OFCCP pages record Executive Order 11246 as revoked by Executive Order 14173 on 21 January 2025, and state that Section 503 and VEVRAA remain in effect. VEVRAA outreach, annual documented evaluation of those efforts and 3 year record keeping still apply to covered contractors. Check DOL's own pages and your counsel rather than any article.
