ADP pricing, and why ADP will not print you a price
ADP pricing is quoted, not listed. ADP publishes no rate for RUN, Workforce Now or TotalSource, and says payroll is billed per pay run or per employee with possible base costs. Your ADP payroll cost depends on headcount, pay frequency, services and states, so the only real number comes from a quote.
Which ADP product you are actually pricing
| Headcount | Product | Packages ADP names | How ADP says it is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 49 | RUN Powered by ADP, which ADP files under small business payroll | Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll, Complete Payroll and HR+, HR Pro Payroll and HR | Tiered pricing across multiple packages. No amounts are shown on the product page. |
| 50 and above | ADP Workforce Now, which ADP targets at midsize and enterprise businesses | Select, Plus, Premium. ADP marks Plus as its most popular | Custom pricing across multiple packages. The page routes you to a form or a phone number. |
| Small and midsize, co-employment | ADP TotalSource, ADP's professional employer organization | Not sold as named packages on the product page | Quoted rather than listed, because it is built around factors specific to your business. |
| Large and multinational | ADP Lyric HCM, which ADP describes as a global HCM for large enterprises | Not published as packages | No figure published. ADP publishes no employee threshold for it either. |
Read any estimate this way
A quote is a fact about one company's headcount, pay frequency, states and chosen services. It is not a rate card. Two firms of the same size can be quoted differently because they run payroll on different schedules.
Why there is no ADP price list to find
ADP does not print prices. Its Workforce Now page replaces them with a phone number and the line skip the forms, get pricing now. The small business payroll page repeats a get pricing button and shows no amounts. Even ADP's own article on what payroll services cost carries no figure, only the statement that ADP provides payroll services priced for businesses of any size.
That absence is why the cost of ADP looks different on every page you open. Whether you search how much is ADP, ADP prices, ADP costs, ADP run cost or ADP Workforce Now cost, each one returns a number somebody was once quoted under a headcount, package and year you cannot see. A software directory whose whole job is listing prices records the ADP starting price as no pricing info.
The 5 things ADP says move your payroll price
- Payroll frequency How often you run payroll. Where a service charges per pay run, a weekly cycle bills more times a year than a semi-monthly one for exactly the same headcount.
- Total number of employees Your headcount, which also decides whether you are quoted RUN or Workforce Now in the first place. Count the people you expect in 12 months, rather than today's figure.
- The types of services needed Payroll alone prices differently from payroll with benefits administration, time and attendance or HR support. This is the variable you control most directly.
- How often payees are added or removed Churn and seasonal hiring are a named factor. Tell them your real turnover rather than a steady-state headcount, or the quote is priced against a company you do not run. Seasonal retail and hospitality payrolls move far more per quarter than a stable office headcount.
- The number of states where people are employed Each additional state brings its own registrations and filings. One remote hire across a state line can change what you are quoted, so list every state before the call.
What to ask before you sign
- Is this billed per pay run, per employee, or a base fee plus both
- Which of the separately billed services below sit inside this quote
- What are the setup or implementation charges, stated as a figure
- What happens to the price when we add a second or third state
- What is the renewal term and how can the price change at renewal
- Which package is this, and what does the tier above add
- What is charged for an off-cycle run, a correction or a reissued check
- What notice do we give to leave, and what does our data cost to export
ADP payroll fees that are often quoted separately
| Service | How ADP describes it | What to confirm in your quote |
|---|---|---|
| Direct deposit | First of the 5 on ADP's own list of services that sometimes incur separate fees. | Whether any ADP direct deposit cost sits inside the base price, and if it is per employee or per run. |
| Automatic check signing | Second on that same list of 5. | Whether it is billed at all for you, since it only applies if you still issue paper checks. |
| Paycheck printing and delivery | Third on the list of 5. | Delivery and courier charges, which ADP's own offer terms treat as pass-through costs. |
| Tax filing | Fourth on the list of 5. | Which jurisdictions are covered, and what happens when you employ in a new state. |
| Year-end processing | Fifth on the list. ADP names Forms W-2 and 1099 among the year-end items. | Whether W-2 and 1099 production is included, and the cost of a reissue or correction. |
| Compliance work | Separately, ADP writes that providers may charge for new hire reporting, tax registration support and wage garnishment administration. | Ask ADP which of those 3 it bills you for, rather than assuming the general statement applies. |
| Time and attendance | Bundled into the Workforce Now Premium package rather than sold as a line item there. | Whether an ADP time and attendance cost means a tier upgrade, and what else that tier carries. |
ADP RUN pricing for a small business
RUN Powered by ADP is the 1 to 49 employee product, and ADP sells it as 4 packages. Essential Payroll is described as payroll, taxes and help with compliance. Enhanced Payroll adds ZipRecruiter, State Unemployment Insurance and garnishment payment service. Complete Payroll and HR+ adds basic HR support. HR Pro adds enhanced HR support and perks for employees.
Those descriptions are the whole of what ADP publishes. Search for an Essential Payroll cost, Enhanced Payroll pricing or HR Pro pricing and you will find a get pricing button beside each tier, nothing more. So the useful question in ADP small business payroll pricing is not which figure to budget. It is which of those 4 descriptions matches the work you need done.
ADP TotalSource and the PEO model
professional employer organization ADP TotalSource is ADP's professional employer organization for small and midsize businesses. Under it, ADP takes on certain employer responsibilities such as payroll administration, benefits administration and compliance.
You keep control over hiring, firing, pay decisions and day-to-day operations. Because the PEO contractually assumes part of the employer role, ADP states plainly that TotalSource pricing is quoted rather than listed, built around factors specific to your business.
The 2 ways ADP says a PEO is priced
| Pricing model | How the fee is calculated | What ADP publishes |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of payroll | The administrative or service fee is calculated as a percentage of total payroll. | ADP writes that PEO administrative fees may range from 2 to 12 percent of total payroll. |
| Per employee | The fee is set as a dollar amount per employee, often monthly or per payroll cycle. | ADP writes that the equivalent is about $40 to $160 per employee per month. |
| What moves it either way | Workforce size and demographics, wage structure, industry risk profile, geography and compliance complexity. | Also workers' compensation and the scope of HR advisory services you take. |
Reading ADP pricing numbers you find online
Do
- Ask ADP for a written quote against your real headcount, pay frequency and state list
- Confirm which services sit in the base price before comparing any two offers
- Compare offers at the same headcount and the same pay schedule, or you are not comparing
- Check the date and the source on every figure you find away from ADP's own site
Do not
- Budgeting from a blog figure that is not sourced to ADP, however often it is repeated
- Assuming a per-employee average scales down neatly to 1 employee when a base fee exists
- Treating an average cost of ADP payroll service as your number rather than as somebody else's
- Assuming last year's promotion is still running, or still carries the same terms
How the 3 months free offer actually works
ADP runs a promotional offer on small business payroll in windows, and the terms are specific. Its published terms say eligible companies must have 1 to 49 employees unless otherwise stated, use Direct Debit of Fees, be new ADP clients using RUN in the continental United States, and start processing payroll by the stated date and keep processing for 3 consecutive months.
The detail most write-ups miss is when the free months land. ADP's terms say the free payroll is applied to the invoice for clients in good standing after the first 3 months of processing, so they land on months 4, 5 and 6. The offer covers standard payroll processing only, excludes non-payroll services and pass-through costs, and cannot be combined with other promotions. Dates change, so read the current terms.

Where hiring cost shows up after the payroll line
A plain-English brief parsed into filters, split between what the person has done and where they work now.
One ADP RUN tier bundles a job board, so some buyers find that posting a role is now part of the payroll bill. Posting fills the roles people apply to. The Cognitive works the other way: you write one line about the hire and it searches for people who are not applying. Only must-haves act as hard gates.
What to remember about ADP pricing
- ADP publishes no list price. RUN is sold as tiered pricing, Workforce Now as custom pricing.
- ADP says payroll is billed per pay run or per employee, with possible base costs on top.
- Headcount, pay frequency, services, payee churn and state count are the 5 factors ADP names.
- ADP fees can sit outside the base price: 5 services are named on its own separate-fee list.
- The only figure ADP publishes is its PEO administrative fee range, and that is not a TotalSource rate.

Frequently asked questions
How much does ADP payroll cost?
ADP publishes no price. Its own product pages for RUN and Workforce Now carry a get pricing button rather than an amount, and its payroll cost article states no figure at all. What ADP does say is that payroll services are commonly billed per pay run or per employee, with possible annual or monthly base costs for additional services, and that it works with each employer to determine the setup that fits their business and budget. The only route to a real number is a quote.
How much does ADP cost per employee per month?
ADP publishes no ADP price per employee for RUN or Workforce Now. It describes the pricing structure instead: per-payroll processing or per-employee fees, with possible base costs. Five things move it, in ADP's own words: payroll frequency, total number of employees, the types of services needed, how often payees are added or removed, and the number of states where people are employed. The only per-employee range ADP publishes anywhere is for PEO administrative fees, a different product.
How much does ADP cost for 1 employee?
There is no published rate, and the arithmetic works against you at that size. Where a service charges a base fee plus a per-employee amount, the base is spread across 1 person, so the effective cost per employee is at its highest with a single employee. Dividing a figure quoted to a 50-person company by 50 will not give you your number. Ask for a quote at your actual headcount.
What is ADP RUN pricing for a small business?
RUN Powered by ADP covers 1 to 49 employees and comes in 4 packages: Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll, Complete Payroll and HR+, and HR Pro Payroll and HR. ADP describes Essential as payroll, taxes and compliance help, Enhanced as that plus ZipRecruiter, State Unemployment Insurance and garnishment payment service, Complete as adding basic HR support, and HR Pro as adding enhanced HR support and employee perks. ADP publishes no price for any of them.
How much does ADP TotalSource cost?
ADP states that TotalSource pricing is quoted rather than listed, because it is built around factors specific to your business. In its general PEO cost article, ADP writes that administrative fees may range from 2 to 12 percent of total payroll, or about $40 to $160 per employee per month. Read that as ADP's published range for PEO administrative fees generally, not as a TotalSource quote. Workforce size, wage structure, industry risk and geography all move it.
What fees does ADP charge on top of payroll processing?
ADP names 5 services that sometimes incur separate fees: direct deposit, automatic check signing, paycheck printing and delivery, tax filing, and year-end processing including Forms W-2 and 1099. Separately it writes that providers may charge for compliance work such as new hire reporting, tax registration support and wage garnishment administration. That is a statement about providers generally, not an ADP rate card, so ask which ADP payroll processing fees apply to you.
What is ADP Workforce Now pricing, and how does it differ from RUN?
Headcount and pricing structure. ADP's own comparison puts RUN with small businesses of 1 to 49 employees on tiered pricing across multiple packages, and Workforce Now with midsize and enterprise businesses of 50 and above on custom pricing across multiple packages. Workforce Now is sold as Select, Plus and Premium, with benefits administration arriving at Plus and time and attendance at Premium. ADP marks Plus as its most popular.
How much does ADP charge for payroll services each month?
ADP charges no published rate, monthly or otherwise. It describes the billing shape rather than the amount: per-payroll processing or per-employee fees, with possible annual or monthly base costs for additional services. That means an ADP payroll cost per month depends on how often you run payroll, not only on headcount, because a weekly cycle bills more times a year than a monthly one. Ask for the recurring figure and the billing basis together.
What are the ADP pricing plans and packages?
ADP sells packages rather than a single plan. RUN, for 1 to 49 employees, comes as Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll, Complete Payroll and HR+, and HR Pro Payroll and HR. Workforce Now, for 50 and above, comes as Select, Plus and Premium. TotalSource and Lyric HCM are not sold as named packages on their product pages. ADP attaches no price to any of these ADP packages, so compare on what each tier includes.
Does ADP offer a free trial?
ADP does not state a free trial on its small business payroll pages. What it runs instead is a promotional offer of 3 months free for new RUN clients, and the terms are specific: 1 to 49 employees unless otherwise stated, Direct Debit of Fees, continental United States, and 3 consecutive months of processing. The free months are applied to months 4, 5 and 6. Promotions run in windows, so check ADP's current offer terms.
